View Full Version : Beastie Boys Referenced In New U2 Music Video

I saw it on VH1 this morning. Then I wanted to see it again to make sure I wasn't seeing things, so I went to YouTube. Basically, the video is a tribute to the bands/singers that U2 love and were inspired by. It's pretty cool actually. Very classy. They show a ton of different artists, and at some points edit it so it seems like the artists are lip synching the lyrics. Towards the end, you see the Beastie Boys, but for only for about 4 seconds. It's some old footage of Adrock and MCA from the Licensed To Ill era performing live. It's kinda blurry, but you can definitley tell that's Adrock jumping up and down in the footage. MCA's a little harder, though. I had to pause the video to see that it was him.
Anyway, I had no idea that U2 are Beastie Boys fans. That's awesome. I think what made it cooler was how they were placed. It was like Led Zeppelin, The Who, The Rolling Stones, then Beastie Boys. I didn't expect that, so it was a nice surprise.

Bono yabbered on about how great Yauch was in the little TFC film thingy on the Cd-Rom in 1997. Said the band were great and all.
edit: I don't care enough to check, actually. I might have seen it on that artist spotlight those Canadian people did. I don't know. But I saw it.

I recall a quote from Bono, something like 'Never follow the Beastie boys' as a general rule of playing live festivals. Someone posted it before.

"One of my favorite groups is the Beasties, their journey is one to watch from just having fun with their own middle-classness to a growing awareness of the way the world is" Bono said that in a SPIN interview

Makes me wonder if Bono's really a fan of their music, or if he's just on their nuts because they (moreover Yauch) are spokesman of the Tibetan struggle.

During that same "spotlight" on, Canadian T.V, Larry Mullen was kinda miffed and went off about how U2 had long ago covered the human rights turf and 'welcomed" the beasties efforts......

Haha my two favourite bands (Beastie Boys and The Clash). I love musicians with stage presence.

you might be right, but I have a feeling it has more to do with getting the rights to use his imagery. yoko that bee-atch! I work at the company who did most of the clearing rights for the personalities. Maybe there were a few celebs who they just couldn't get??.. Anyway here's a little blurb:
CORBIS MAKES NEW U2 VIDEO REVOLUTIONARY
On November 16, 2006, Corbis Rights & Music Clearances was approached by Modernista, an ad agency who usually conducts their own clearances. They were reluctant to outsource their clearances for a new, high-profile, confidential project: a U2 music video.
Modernista initially hired Corbis to clear 10 deceased musicians including Ray Charles, James Brown, Bob Marley, Johnny Cash and others. But as Corbis quickly pulled together the clearances, the agency started adding more and more musicians to the list - in the end asking Corbis to obtain 30 clearances. The deadline for these clearances? Three weeks.
Thanks to the great work by the Corbis RMC team, the video was successfully completed in time for the January 1, 2007 release of U2's new single, "Window in the Skies."

The Beastie Boys footage is more like .4 seconds :\
The Boys should've gotten more play. Afterall we see Beck twice, Clash twice, and someone obviously had a hard-on for Nirvana when they put them in 3 times.. I mean I honestly love Nirvana, Beck, and Clash as much as the next person, but Beasties deserve more time. I was originally thinkin' because Nirvana and Clash have such a visual presence that's why we see them more...But so do the B-Boys I guess..it could've been real nice having them jumping up and down from the Check Your Head era, right? That would've been sick. Oh well. At least they made the cut.

^^^ You're quite right on all those accounts. The one's I thought were Black Crowes I only checked the singer, not the whole band, and I've seen Chris in a similar dress, and the ones I'm claiming to be the Who I've seen Pete Townsend wearing that sort of jumpsuit sometime, but the clip here is so short so I'm uncertain. I ain't familiar with Arcade Fire so I ain't saying anything about them (but as all the artists are U2's faves so what would the Corrs do there anyway...). Also Billie Holiday is there again between Bowie/Ziggy and Smokey Robinson. I can't believe I missed her, but she just escaped my mind on there... :o And I've put too many asterix after the Queen, there should be only two, and Fela Kuti is between Beasties and Talking Heads.
And I missed to correct Chrissie Hynde's name's spelling....
In case there's any nerds needing this info...
