Hello film fans!

I don't know if anyone else has yet to see this movie but...I can't say enough about it....I saw a screening over the weekend......I'm a sucker and maybe a little biased as the story line/plot is something about which my family is intimately familiar with (post Franco Spain)......but this may be the best "fantasy" film, I have ever seen!

rave,rave,rave......so very dark,so very deliscious...can't recommend it enough....(y) (y) (y)

I saw it on Friday...and I have to tell you I was a little dissapointed. It was beautiful to watch but there was a lot of perdictable things...I wish there was more of the Pale Man, its really really depressing.

it was just ok, I am having a hard time seeing as to why its been nominated for all these awards.

I've been wainting for this since I saw The Devil's Backbone a few months ago. Also a good film by Guillermo del Toro.

Agreed,Spanish film makers are notoriously masochistic!

My friend thought the same, the movie was so rich with symbolism and cultural references, with regards to literature and art, that I found it to be one hook after the other.....like I was "in" on every turn....also,when so many films are being undermined by graphic and special effects or animation,I found this to a lovely mix of mediums.....like I was'nt constantly aware of what was film and what was not......like I said I'm biased though!;)

I have to see that.

But yeah, I'm excited for this movie. I'm going to go see it this weekend.

I'm glad there's someone else.

I was really excited about this movie and left about an hour into it. I didn't give a shit about any of the people, the whole guerilla/Civil war stuff felt very tacked on and purposeless (maybe that gets resolved by the end; I hope so); and there was practically zero tension with the girl's adventures. The character designs were interesting, but that only goes so far.

This and Hellboy are the only things I've seen by this director, and I left Hellboy with a big fat meh also. Man, this was disappointing. (n)

I liked it,

but I feel it was advertised WAY off than what the actual movie was based on. I was going in there thinking I was going to see mostly the Labyrinth and creatures and so forth.

And so I too was a bit disappointed.

^ I felt the same way, they advertised it like it was all about her in this underworld...not at all what it really was.

A-Z...how could you leave in the middle of the movie? Do you do that often? I could never leave, no matter how bad a movie got, curiosity would get the best of me...it's like when I am reading a crappy book, I have to finish because I've started, no matter how bad it is.

Yeah, I'll leave.

There was nothing about Pan's that I was still curious about. At that point, it was limp enough that I didn't even want to wait for the pale man.

My reasoning and instinct is that my time is too valuable to waste on something I don't want to waste it on. And as I'm sitting there watching a bad -- or worse, uninvolving -- movie (or concert, or whatever), as my thoughts go from "Oh goody! -- I'm seeing a movie!" to "I could be washing my hair," I'll give it enough time to confirm the worst, then split if it's not going anywhere. If I ever regain curiosity, I can rent it.

I think an audience has an obligation to engage in a book or movie or whatever in a way which is open -- you're willing to give the artist(s) a shot at whatever they're doing -- stylistically, thematically, or whatever. That's meeting the artist halfway, I think, and from there, it's the artist's responsibility to draw the audience along and entertain. The entertainment can be punishing or difficult or challenging as hell -- that's fine, as long as the artist earns the audience's engagement. Obviously, different people are entertained by different things, but, for me, if I've lost all interest in a meal, I have no problem with leaving the table.

Pretty much all of them. I've never had hangups about that.

But I've left movies with various friends, also. If it's not working, it's not working, and we split.

-- especially if you see a LOT of movies.

Yeah -- I don't understand the insecurity thing about going to movies alone. It's not like it's a prom or something.

That's comforting, I thought you may have been an usher or sadly,a critic..;)

saw this as a BAFTA screener a couple days back.

yeah, i was a little disappointed too. my flatmate turned round at the end, shrugged her shoulders and said "i dunny like!".

i don't know what i was expecting. just something on a whole other level. it was beautiful, sure. art direction, cinematography, make-up. but it was missing.. something.

i thought sergio lopez's character was a bit caricature. didn't like him.. at all. mercedes (maribel verdú) was great though.

i agree with what you said about the whole communists-in-the-woods thing, a-z. it just jarred with what i thought the movie was going to be about - namely, a girl with her loneliness and imagination. hmm. dunno.

Great movie.

There's a movie where the social commentary (mostly narration and accompanying imagery) is like counterpoint to the "main" story, and it doesn't feel out of place whatsoever. In theory, that should have felt more intrusive than the stuff in Pan's, but it doesn't feel that way at all.
