what an utterly british way to die, eh? i love it! feel like you're going to die soon? step out into a blizzard and try not to let the team spirit down by being so selfish as to die in the tent and not by yourself!
i predict this will receive possibly zero replies as it's not very common for people to be captain scott/antarctic exploration enthusiasts nowadays. i'm not an enthusiast by any means, but the boyfriend is and i am just reading scott's last letter to his wife:
"I think the best chance has gone. We have decided not to kill ourselves but to fight it to the last for that depot but in the fighting there is a painless end so don't worry."
people don't explore like that anymore, eh?
i wonder how frostbite feels. not pretty i assume.

Yeah. An awesome way to go. You should watch some WWI movies, lot's of people going to die for their comrades.

yeah, we're all into cannibalism under duress, i tells yah!
pres, i do like some cool war movies. ranald is like crazy into old school war books and the like. he is much tickled they are not going to call the dog "nigger" (as it was in real life) in the new remake of the dambusters. apparently there is some cool story behind this but it escapes me now.
i must say i do love reach for the sky (starring one of my favourited actors kenneth more - tally ho!) about the very cool douglas bader (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Bader). no legs?! pft! you can still fight for your country!
haha i just send ranald an email saying much the same as i am in this thread and he replied with:
original thinkings of ranald gilbert esq:
Bear in mind that while the Norwegian Amundsen was the first man to reach the south pole, plucky Englishman Captain Scott and his party were the first people to DIE there, meaning that we can still be proud of our place in the history of polar exploration. The soft as shite Scandinavian was too much of a pussy to get his place in history the hard way!
RULE BRITANNIA!!

So I was watching this this movie about Stalingrad, and the Nazis are crawling through the city trying not to be seen by the Russians. One of the Germans accidentaly fires of his gun and all the Russians are alerted and start firing on them.
Later in the movie the soldier who accidentaly fired off his gun is given a chance to redeem himself by running past enemy machine gun nests, to throw a grenade in a bunker. So he grabs this grenade and runs through a hail of bullets for about 100 meters before getting shot in the face, lol!

as my flatmate sarah would say, "whitey!" you've got cancer? whitey. your whole family have died under a brutal separatist regime? whitey. scarring over 95% of your body? whitey.
a whitey is what happens when inexperienced people smoke too much weed and get ill, pale, and spew. just so you know. i'm all about the learning here.
i have asked ranald for his favourite war-time icon but he is no replying :/
i saw the shackleton tv thingie with kenneth branagh but i don't really like kenneth branagh so i sorta stopped. he could have added to be antarctic exploration knowledge :(

When going to the beach with my dad, he used to tell us that if we swam too far out we would get swept away to Antartica. I was shit scared of that happening. One time I saw a whale and he said it would take me for a ride to Antartica.

i have vague memories of me already explaining my fear of being swallowed by a whale to you before. it was a great bit of threadery.
your dad sounds awesome.
i have always wondered what would be more of a "whitey" - being stranded in the arctic or the antarctic. seems, it's the antarctic! i now have an answer. it is much colder in the antarctic because much of the continent is more than 3kn above sea level, and temperature decreases with elevation. also, the arctic ocean covers the north polar zone which warrrmmm the arctic up more than its southern cousin. ahhh. good to know.
never wear cotton clothing in extremely cold places! it will retain moisture from perspiration and remain wet and cold and your frost bite will be painful.
have you seen touching the void? no, not that video you made with freeb. it's great. perhaps the whitey to end all whiteys!

Turn him onto some Garth Ennis comics, like War Stories, Preacher or Rifle Brigade. He'll love 'em.

Thanks for all the polar tips. They are good to know - just in case!
Antarctica is way cooler than the Arctic. I used to love Antarctica. I would squint to see it. "Dad, I can see ICE!!" "No you can't." :(
EDIT: I still like seeing all the big ice breakers that come into port here.

well, we don't want you suffering in the cold now do we, joe!
ranald got back to me and said:
"Douglas Bader drove Alvises - that's my Dad's type of old cars.
I like Karl Doenitz because he was a gentleman and German, and Monty because he was generally a dude but there are too many to mention."
hmm, not in the mood to chat today i think!
so i have discovered karl doenitz (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Doenitz) was president of germany for 23 days after hitler's suicide.
i didn't know nazis could be gentlemen, and i don't even know if he was a hardcore nazi or just a, um, part-time nazi while being a good man but i trust ranald's judgement.
monty lead the allied forces at el alamein, that much i know. also wikipedia says he did not attend his own mother's funeral because he was "too busy". sweet.

Too bad there hasn't been a truly ace documentary about Shackleton's Endurance yet. The one that Liam Neeson narrates is okay, but, man. That's a story.
At one point, Mel Gibson was looking at doing a Shackleton/Endurance movie. That could be sweet.

did you get to see the shackleton kenneth branagh mini-series? it's well made, but as i say, kenneth branagh sort of makes my eyes cross.
i don't know too much about shackleton. i've only just started my antarctic education. ranald will though. but he's not very chatty today.
re: the nazi thing he says that karl thingie wasn't a nazi. "not all germans were nazis and the navy was the least political and therefore least nazi-fied service." okay. that's me told. of course i knew that all germans weren't nazis, but he was freakin' lead the battle of the atlantic!

Yeah -- I couldn't stick with it for long.
I'm trying to think of anything after Henry V of his that I liked. Man, that guy just went south and I'm really not sure why. Inflated self-importance? Dead Again truly sucked. My God, my girlfriend and I laughed through so much of that.

We use Ivan much in the same way you guys say POMS. And I couldn't watch that movie cause I had to laugh too much. And most germans my age are totally stuffed with Nazi Germany history, nobody wants to hear anything about it after being forcefed that stuff at least 4 years in different subjects in school. Yes, the general consesus is we need to work this up for at least 6 millenia...
