Well... the same concept can be applied to any state. It's not really that we're so large or anything... it's just the way people identify what part of the mitten we're from other than actually pulling up our hand and showing people (yes, we actually do that).

If you live closer to Lake Erie (and Canada) then you're from east Michigan. If you live closer to Lake Michigan then that's considered west Michigan. But only in the lower parts of the state.

Lansing, our state capital, is kind of the middle of the lower half of the state and some people call that mid-Michigan. Most of the folks from the areas down here consider anything much further north than Lansing "northern Michigan."

I, however, come from a small town up near the geographic center of the state (which is St. Louis, MI... another small town) but those of us from that part of the state tend to call it mid-Michigan as well.

Yeah, it's a little confusing and pretty stupid. Also there really was no reason for me to type all this out, but whatever. That's your lesson in Michigan for the day.
