'Spyware' teacher found guilty of exposing kids to smut
Perverse verdict

A teacher whose classroom PC displayed pornographic images to school children faces up to 40 years imprisonment.

The pop-up images of couples fornicating will the likely result of spyware infestation, according to defence witnesses testifying on behalf of teacher Julie Amero, 40, Windham, Connecticut. But the six-person jury rejected this argument and convicted the substitute language teacher on Friday of four counts of risk of injury to a minor after just two hours of deliberation, according to local reports.

The trial stemmed from an October 2004 incident when Amero was teaching a seventh-grade language class at Kelly Middle School. Graphic images from sites including meetlovers.com and femalesexual.com were displayed on her computer in front of the ten young children in her class.

The prosecution alleged that this cycle of graphic images was the result of Amero actively visiting pornographic sites. State Prosecutor David Smith questioned why she didn't simply pull the plug on the PC.

The defence unsuccessfully argued that computer spyware was to blame. Amero claimed she could not control the graphic images that began circulating on the PC. "The pop-ups never went away. They were continuous," she testified.

Defense computer expert W. Herbert Horner said that he found spyware on the PC, linked to a seemingly innocent hair styling website, "that led to this pornographic loop that was out of control".

It's easy to understood how someone, like Amero, not knowledgeable about computers, might panic in such circumstances. The license for the school's content filtering software, which (if working) would have blocked the images, had expired.

But after listening to the students testifying and a police security expert, the jury rejected these arguments and convicted Amero.

Norwich Police Detective Mark Lounsbury, a computer crimes investigator, testified that the offending sites were accessed on Amero's watch and that users interaction was involved.

State Prosecutor Smith said: "You have to physically click on it to get to those sites. I think the evidence is overwhelming that she did intend to access those websites."

Based on reports that the jury had begun discussing the trial during a bar-room lunch, Amero's lawyers applied for a mistrial. The jurors denied these allegations and were allowed to consider their verdict.

Defence lawyer John Cocheo said he intends to appeal the guilty verdict. Sentencing in the case is due to take place on 2 March, the Norwich Bulletin reports.

that's absolutely hideous and i can't believe it happened. it really honestly sounds like the teacher didn't even do anything wrong, first of all, that she just fell victim to unfortunate spyware. apparently the jury did not understand that.

and secondly, 40 fucking years? she could have fucked a kid and got less time than that. if this doesn't get reduced on appeal i'm dropping out of law school, i have no faith in the system based on this

"You have to physically click on it to get to those sites. I think the evidence is overwhelming that she did intend to access those websites."

what does that even fucking mean??? juries, i swear

As far as I know she could get 40 years, but yes, a jury found her guilty.

If she really does get sentenced she should be rescued by the international community because she was the victim of a ridiculous trial.

oh, yeah, i missed the part where it said "up to" 40 years. whoooops. i don't think juries do sentencing anyway, i'm only 2 weeks into my criminal law class, i'm not that smart yet

still, it's so retarded.

I'd skip a few classes and rent a season or two of law and order if I were you ;)

My exboyfriend once told me that his high school teacher brought in a tape to show the class, something he had recorded off of PBS. Except it was the wrong tape, he accidentally brought in a porn he had taped. He turned it on in front of the class and for a split second they saw a faceful of ass, and some dude thrusting in and out of it. The teacher quickly turned it off and turned beet-red and the class burst out laughing.

Something seems off in this case of Pop Up ads on what is probably a school districts PC. The district must have some sort of IT dept who uses some sort of filtering devices, I have maybe 2 pop up ads a week on my home PC, they don't exsist at work. If I'm correct she doesn't even own the equipment.

I'm probably missing something...seems like the judge will fuck you up if you drive your kids by risque graffiti.

i'd honestly be really surprised if they had their shit together that well. it's a middle school, with middle school employees, i doubt they put much funding or energy into the IT department, who knows what people do with the computers.

even if somebody DID visit a porn site, and that's what triggered the pop-ups, it just really doesn't sound like there's any way to prove that it was this specific teacher that did it. she's only a substitute, even. it sounds like she was just unlucky.

and even if she DID visit the porn sites, that is not grounds for any length of imprisonment, much less up to 40 years. there's no way she could have expected that shit to happen. if she was the one looking at porn, then the worst thing that should happen to her is she ought to lose her job, that's it.

something similar happened in my 3rd grade class. whenthe teacher turned on the T.V it was right in the middle of a sex scene on a soap opera the whole class was all "EWWWW!!" cuz thats a typical 3rd grader's reaction to sex.

umm yea that really sucks for the teacher

You might have missed this:

in one of my computer tech classes the teacher was going through websites to show us good layouts and shit for our web design portion. his comp was projected onto a screen behind him. a rather large screen. he typed in an address walked away from his computer with his back to the screen and started talking about the website he thought he navigated too. he was all like "ass you will see when the page loads...blah blah blah blah". all we saw were tits and ass jizz and dicks. whitehouse.com is much different than whitehouse.gov.

oh yeah there was a nun in our class.

bob, your disgust over this verdict is exactly why you should not quit law school.

depending on the charge, she may score mandatory prison time, or not. it really depends on the state's sentencing guidelines and how many charges and the level of felony. it's possible she may end up with a few years' probation.

i reckon the media would be blowing this one right out of proportion and you'll never hear another word about it because she gets off on probation and that doesn't make good headlines following "gets 40 years"

also what a bunch of asstards on that jury
