Yeah. Plus they seem to save the best skits for the first half of the show...it's all downhill from there...

I guess this thread deserves a "YES, THANK YOU CAP'N OBVIOUS!" But still.. When I was a kid, my mom would watch it every week. And even though I didn't exactly 'get' what was going down, it was funny. Just all around perfomance, facial expression, blabla. I'm talking Walken/Sandler era.
I'm not the biggest Ferrell fan, but when he left, for me, that's when it really started going to shit. Everyone on there now just annoys me.

Hey TOY....I'll agree that you're a female...cus I know that now so hope all's well with the ole' vagina and breasts
The digital shorts written by Andy, Akiva, and Jorma are the only good things.
The lettuce one? That's what sparked this thread!
Nothing personal, but it sucks. I get more entertainment out of watching that Mac vs. PC commercial

Ha Ha. Some of us think it started sucking about 20 years ago -- whenever Phil Hartmann left. :p

Even when everyone talks about how good it was 10+ years ago...it wasnt. There was maybe four good cast members...David Spade sucks, Adam Sandler sucks, Rob Schneider is pretty much useless in the humor department, Mike Myers sucks. I think the only funny ones were Phil Hartman and Chris Farley.

I sort of agree. I think there was maybe one year there (when Wayne's World started) where SNL was funny. Mike Myers wasn't a tool right away. And Dana Carvey was funny for a season or two before all the screen time went to his head.
The thing is that I watched the show since the first season. (My parents shouldn't have let me watch the first seasons because I was too young but they were tired of being parents by then.) Anyhow, the show was NEVER flat out funny. It was always funny about half the time and about half the time the sketches laid an egg. But if you put together the funny clips, it seems funnier in retrospect than it was. For instance, during the Eddie Murphy years, every sketch Murphy was in was funny but none of the other ones were. I haven't watched the show in the past 8 years or so, but for my money the worst year was the year Lorne Michaels came back, or maybe the year that Billy Crystal was in it.

I had a "Best of Eddie Murphy" SNL tape that I got for christmas when I was like 8.
The Black History Minute skit kills me.

I sort of agree with documad's sort of agreement.
I think a lot of things on SNL make me laugh really hard, but it isn't consistent at all. I think that keenan guy should never be on there ever ever ever never! he sucks the funny out of everything.
I like those shorts with andy samberg a lot. they're always really well done.
MadTV is pretty much garbage all the time now, except for Bobby Lee and Ike sometimes and the new black girl is pretty funny.

Murphy is the only person in the history of that show who was actually as funny as he was reputed to be.
I don't think they play the non-Lorne Michaels shows in reruns -- at least I never see them, so I sometimes think that I'm imagining skits that didn't happen. I remember my dad laughing the hardest my dad could laugh when Murphy spoofed that convict/writer who Norman Mailer sponsored in real life -- "kill my landlord, kill my landlord." But the best thing was when Buckwheat got shot the weekend after Reagan. You had to see the overdone Reagan newcoverage to truly appreciate the balls SNL had to copy it exactly.

I remember my parents commenting on that skit and both of them finding them really un-funny because they said it also reminded them of the news coverage when John Lennon got killed a few months prior.

It's funny that I wasn't old enough to be upset when John Lennon died. I vaguely remember all the news footage of people with candles in the park. I had been a Beatles fan since I was little, but I thought of the Beatles as being this magical thing from the past and the individual John Paul George and Ringo seemed separate from the Beatles whose music I knew. I'd see Ringo on the Tonight Show or Paul on SNL and they didn't look like Beatles to me.
But I distinctly remember coming home from school and watching the exact same footage played over and over and over of Reagan getting shot and that Ted Koppel would never shut up about it. And it was hiiiiii-lar-ious when the coverage of Buckwheat's shooting kept interrupting the program even though they had nothing new to say.
