Not exactly an answer to your question but way back in 1951 this author brought up some issues that are eerily close to what is happening now (they aren't *exactly* what you are discussing but close enough....and I just like spreading general knowledge around :)):
"The Marching Morons" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Marching_Morons)
A classic sci-fi short story that made a huge impression on me as a kid and parts of which that are coming true more and more as time goes by. :(

general news coverage, and specifically oreily and glen beck, blaming iran for the insurgency, saying they "probably already have" weapons of mass destruction, and telling americans that iran is the biggest threat to the united states right now. they are kicking it in full gear, and much the same way they did for the iraq invasion.

I would be totally unsurprised if we found out O'Reilly, Beck and others like them had had a meeting somewhere and formally decided to make Iran the next object of (irrational) fear for the American public.
I hate to say this because it makes me look like a snob, but there are a lot of dumb people out there that believe whatever they see/hear on their TV which is what I'm sure O'Reilly And Crew are counting on. And because of the politically-correct crap our culture is drenched in, IMO most people are too scared to tell those people that they *shouldn't* believe everything "the box" tells them.
I will be SO effing glad when 2008 rolls around and we get a change of leadership. Not that this will guarantee an American utopia, but jeezus anything has got to be better than what we have now. We truly are dealing with power-hungry zealots - mostly of the government & corporate variety - trying to change the world without their citizens' permission.

If you think O'Reilly is bad, just watch an episode of "Hannity's America".
I think hes TRYING to live up to Colbert's stereotyping.

You know what's weird about Murdoch? He allows the writers of The Simpsons (a 20th Century Fox property) to mention and many times fully/openly discuss issues that are considered liberal to ultra-liberal, & other subjects that Fox News consistantly makes fun of.
The only reason I can think of for him to let this pass is the amount of $$$ this show pulls in for his sprawling corporation (I'll admit it is one of my favorite programs ever & have watched it from the beginning). How hypocritical is that but it also shows how much power money has over people like him.
