I'm wondering if these things really work in quitting smoking. I've been smoking cigars for a long time and just a couple months ago, I started smoking cigarettes . I don't know why I even started smoking those damn things. I hate making excuses but I was getting pretty damn stressed, I guess. Now my stress is gone but I don't see myself quitting cold turkey. I really want to quit because I can tell it's effecting my health. Getting breathless just by walking up stairs.

Anyhow, my wife is a journalist and she interviewed a company that makes the patches and they gave her a six month program of the patches, all the way from steps 1-3. I figure I'll try it since it was free and those boxes run about sixty bucks a pop. I'm starting tomorrow morning.

If it works, I wonder if they make alcohol patches? Eh, I'd probably end up abusing those though.

they help, they won't magically make you not want to smoke, but help with nicotine withdrawls. most of my friends have found gum more helpful.

i, of course, was never stupid enough to take up smoking in the first place.

I never tried the patches but I did use the gum a couple of times.

Cold turkey is what worked for me. Good Luck!

I find the idea of applying a "patch" which "feeds" addictives strangely attractive. But I neither consider quitting nor am I sure they help getting around the suckling aspect (having something in your mouth to suckle on). I'm pretty convinced smoking leads to such an urge, just look at how many people get massively fat after quitting.
BTW Take care to carry extra patches, just in case. Too many people bum for a smoke saying "I think my patch is empty".

first of all, congratulations and good luck on the road to stopping smoking! (y) smoking is really gross. that's it. just gross.

anyway, my flatmate started his campaign to stop smoking on monday with the help of patches. he has a wee calendar that he can add stickers to representing if he's in a bad mood, if he feels good, if he had a cheeky fag etc etc to record his progress. also he had to list his three main reasons for giving up. they were:

1. I DON'T WANT TO DIE!!!!!!!!
2. i want to sing.
3. i want to be healthy.

it made me laugh.
anyway, yeah, he's using 'em. they really smell of mouldy ash trays and pee when you take them off. yucky yuck yuck. he caved into a "third" of a cigarette the other day but other than that has been alright apart from, um, increased moodiness and a desire to eat LOTS.

my friend said the patch helps a little bit occasionally but you really have to WANT to quit really bad. you need to have the selfcontrol to just stop smoking, and the patch will be really good for a little extra help, but that is all. the patch isnt magical :(

Thanks. Maybe it's a good thing that your flatmate doesn't have an account here because I could see too many bitchy threads from him.:D

I just put the patch on this morning and strangely enough, I can feel the nicotine seething it's way in my system. I've already been coughing some nasty clumps up too.

Also another thing that is helpfull is hearing people say that smoking's nasty like you said. Input like that should make anybody think before they go to put a cig in their mouth and light up. Alot of times, I'd be smoking outside and notice that I'm the only one doing it and I'll end up throwing my cig away.

Yep. You stupid bitch :D

Oh yeah pal? After school, at the smoker's alley. Just you and me and our blades. Oh shit, I don't want to go there.

smoking is gross.

hardcore smokers have yucky fingernails, yellow horrible skin, smelly clothes and breath, and empty wallets.

smokers also cause other people to inhale their dirty habit that invariably ends up hurting people other than themselves.

essentialy, smoking makes you DIE! EARLIER!

I think I'll have to polish my Ginzu then. And don't even think about running alright?

no no Eric, just think about that rich woodsy flavor.

I think its genetic. My grandmother smoked for 40+ years before quitting. Shes 83 and lives independently in good health. She also walks everywhere. I think the negative effects of smoking coupled with a sedantary lifestyle are what really cause it to be extra dangerous. Compare the cancer rates in Europe to that of the US.

Lately when I light up, they do have a woodsy flavor. Kind of like a tree that a dog has raised it's leg upon. Seriously, they've been tasting like piss lately.

In the case as your grandma. People are just fortunate. I know pleny of old people who don't hack or show any symptoms of ling term smoking.

I just like breathing man. Living in NY and hoofing everywhere I go requires my lungs to be fully functional.

reading the title of this thread for some reason makes me think of that Tori Amos song that was moderately popular with some chorus about "Shes addicted to nicotine patches" or some shit.

They do help in fact I have one on right now. I have had only 5 smokes in 17 days so I guess that's good. I probably wouldn't have even smoked that but I've been under a LOT of stress lately. I made it 8 days w/out one but then the damn Buckeyes forced me to have one but I don't like to talk about that. It's really more of a mental thing at this point for me. Anyway good luck man

Good luck with you. If I were still in the military, I'd never think of quitting smoking. I could imagine that most of your unit smokes to which doesn't help.

Hell yeah dude you know how it is...one person goes out to the smoke pit and everyone goes. Then you got guys giving you shit for quitting and not going on smoke breaks with them anymore...

I have really good motivation this time though...spite. My ex was always in my shit about it but instead of being supportive she was a nag about it and gave me ultimatums. Anyway my new girl has been very supportive and low key about it all which is nice

Bump.

I'm on my 20 day mark. Still hadn't had a puff on a cigarette. I haven't even had the urge to smoke and now when someone walks by with a cig I just wanna gag.

I've went 2 days before without wearing my patch because I just forgot to put it on. I felt a little on the edge but not by much at all. I'm sure I can do allright without the patch too. I'm just wearing them because I don't want to waste them.

This is a big accomplishment for me. I've been smoking cigars and inhaling them since I was 14. Off and on smoking cigs but a couple months ago, I started smoking them everyday. At least 15 a day. I've had a pulmonary function test done on me during the service because I had problems breathing and the doctors said that I had the lungs of a 54 year old man.

I can taste better, smell better and breath so much easier and it's only 20 days. Bad thing is, I can now smell people on the subway and there's some stinky motherfuckers on those trains.

smokers

Well, unless they learned how to add 12 days of camel mating sweat in the hot sun and fishguts into a cigarette form, that might be correct.

For real, as much as I don't want to smell cigs. I'd rather smell that then what I've encountered on the trains. Worse than my chain reactive fart too.

I have those, too. They're lying next to his fingers in my closet.

Right on man. When I finally successfully quit (it took a lot of tries) I was amazed at how much better I always felt and FAST too. I mean, I smoked for like 11 years and after not smoking for about 3 weeks, I noticed I was kicking ass in cardio at the gym and how much better everything tastes/smelled etc. I also noticed how bad smokers smell.

Congratulations!!!

Still going strong after 6 months. A pack a day Marlboro Red smoker for 20 years is off Phillip Morris' payroll.

Congrats and keep up the good work to both you and Yeti.(y)

I hear the most effective way to quit smoking is cold turkey, but you really want to have to give it up. My friend was doing it for a guy, stopped smoking for 4 months, and then realized she missed the act of smoking and took it up again.

I always thought you would have the occasional cigar once a week or so....I never knew you were a nicotine 'feine! Wow, good luck and you had better give up the cigars too.

Alcohol patch? Shit I better start researching a sex patch this generation is ready to quit everything.
