today i received an offer to be an junior actuary for ABN AMRO. i graduate in 6 months and currently making fuck all in comparison to what i can be making in 6 months.
PRO's - it's a job that i wont be absolutely bored with
- it's insane pay

CON's - i'll get paid significantly less in training then what i'm getting atm
- the job is in Amsterdam and i dont speak a word of dutch

i'm semi keen for the position but if i'm going to work overseas i'd rather work somewhere like Dubai or Moscow, a city that's really in a boom period. so i'm holding out for a position

also, synch and others, do many ppl in holland speak english?

I don't know what an actuary is, but ABN AMRO's a bank, right?
Don't don the tie, 90% of the time it's a life sentence!
First of all let me remind you of the semi-legal status of certain plants in Holland, big plus. Also Amsterdam is really nice for going out, shopping or whatever. It's got class! Beach life is only 3-4 months a year unless you are a true russian ice swimmer, but the drive is not too long. How long would you be there before goin anywhere else?

Synch assures me daily that I don't need to speak dutch before moving to Amsterdam. He says everyone speaks english there and they only sacrifice their first born sons to the goat god. If I can adjust, anyone can.

How does immigration to Holland work, anyways? Is it a pain in the ass like moving to US/Canada because they're super strict?

Grrr.

yeah, i love moscow but i absolutely hate the fucking cold.

i'd be there for 3 years then most likely i'd go to sydney for work. this is always what i wanted tho, to work overseas for a couple of years then come back home. but with this kind of specialty i could make a killing in Dubai.

yeah abn amro is an investment bank speciallising in brokering.

Ironically enough I have no clue. Given another two years I might have some kind of plan. :/

So in theory, we could both be moving there soon. If you could stand Americans, I'd say let's have a drink sometime.

i wouldn't actually emmigrate, i think it would just be some sort of extended work visa. i meet with them next week so i hope they tell me all those kind of details. i'm guessing it should be too bad because Holland is the company's home country

Marriage or grad school is the way to go!

I chose the latter because I'm too young and immature for marriage at this point. Plus, cheap grad school! I sure hope I get in.

Wait, where are you planning on moving too? Canadia from the US? Or vice versa? Either way, as long as you're not Mexican why would it be a problem?

it's not really grad school, just 3 years of learning how to determine the best fees to charge to make maximum profit. sounds easy but there's a ridiculous amount of statistics to go thru

russian females surnames majorily have 'a' attached to the end of their name. maria's dad is Sharapov. marat safin's sister's last name is Safina, putin's wife is putina etc

Wait, where are you planning on moving too? Canadia from the US? Or vice versa? Either way, as long as you're not Mexican why would it be a problem?

Because in the new AGE OF TERRORISM, they gotta be careful of who they let over the borders. The standards for getting into Canada are the same as the US; both are a complete bitch to get into. I love how the Dept. of State say they're an "open country with secure borders" on their website, because it sounds like they're actually flexible. WRONG. To get into either country, you gotta get a job there (it's hard to convince employers to take you on because you'd be their responsibility, plus you have to convince the govt that you're not taking away jobs from citizens), have a direct relative who's a citizen (spouse, parent, sibling), or just temporarily visit for a school degree. Or be a refugee from a war-torn country. That's it. If you don't fall under those categories, oh well. If you just want to up and move to Canada, they won't let you without a really great reason and proof and will make you jump through hoops.

PAIN. IN. THE. ASS.

so, yesterday i went into the offices of abn amro to discuss what the go is. i still have to take a test to assure that i'm competant for the position but it should be fairly easy. basically, until i finish my degrees i'll work as a statiscian in brisbane. one catch is that i have to keep my GPA above 6.5 (mine's 6.53 atm) so as long as i get a 6 and a 7 in my subjects this semester i'll be ok. once that's over i'll be flown over to amsterdam to work along side an actuary for 3 years at a base rate ( which is incredibly high). i wont be constantly in amsterdam. most of the time i will accompany this actuary to various places, mostly in europe and america (which i'm sure i'll hate) and sometimes in asia too.

after 3 years i'll be given a full mock test to see what i'm capable of. if i pass that i'll be employed with the company with a guaranteed base rate and a commission.

they say i should get about 4 jobs a year which last about 2 months at 60 - 70 hours a week. that's what they expect. so it's about the normal amount of hours someone would have to work in a year, but you get about 4 months holidays if you work your arse off the other 8 months

i'm still waiting to hear from some other companies i applied for. it's a reallly good job with incredible pay. the ulltimate downside tho is with the workload/ travelling it's really hard to have a social life or a relationship. i know i'd be stupid to turn down something like this but overall i'm still undecided

i'm starting to sort of hate you purely for the amount of times you wrote "incredible pay" in this thread. oh, and frequent travelling abroad. and 4 month holidays. yeah. ohhh what should i do? should i take the really blinging job in new delhi with the 100 willing virgins waiting on me hand and foot, or the fast-track mini adventure in uganda feeding baby lions and being plucked grapes by tribal beauties in my gold-plated office? hmmm!

lol. yeah but what's the point of it all if you have no one to spend it on?

the reason i'm complaining is because if i take this then this job will be my life. that's a feeling i never want to experience. if i had someone to be with me i wouldn't hesitate. i would want something in my life to mean more than my job.

you're crazy to turn it down.

i'm a 'career widow' at the moment, my boyfriend is clocking up silly hours at work and work-related functions.

yes I get new shoes bags and clothes but he's often too tired to spend time with me, and in that respect I feel neglected :(

so being on your own would be a good thing. no silly girlfriends to muck things up and make you feel bad for being a career man...
yeah, then one day i can find someone to spoil with shoes and clothes :p
