it really distracts me.
Examples:
Prince's "Dooo Ooops"
Michael Jackson's "Uhhh Uhhh"
David Lee Roth's "Yooooow's"
Billy Idol's "Oooww's"
name some others

Mark E Smith of The Fall has done lots of fill-ins between vocals, usually an 'AH' at the end of a word or percussive noises

BTW I disagree. James Brown is the king and Al Green is the heir apparent.

christina aguilera does a little "HA" at the end of a phrase sometimes
usually found in live performances, its sort of punctuates the end of that phrase for her.

Freddy Mercury's "Skibideebop. Skeebeebopbaabop!"
He never did this before the 80's.

James Brown is the king
I'd agree with you but halfway through his career that's all he did. seemed that there were no actual lyrics. just screams and calls to hit him...which was awesome.

I intitially thought you meant their breathing... if you ever notice the breaths they take between lines, they start to over-ride the main vocals...try it sometime, its especially effective with talented solo singers and news anchormen/women.
