I'm Done With TGIFridays

I said I was done with them on 12/31/04 when I was in the financial district in NYC and trying to grab some lunch. I had ordered a burger w/ a veggie patty and an hour later (after 2 rounds of tables had been seated, fed and charged) we get the waiter coming back letting us know they don't have veggie patties. It took you an hour to figure this out? And why is it on the menu? I swore I'd never go back.

Today, 1/19/07, my receptionist and I go because she wants their Oreo cake or pie or whatever. They no longer mention veggie patties on the menu. I order a house salad. 45 minutes later our food arrives. The lettuce feels like sand paper. Literally, like grinding your teeth back and forth on it. I tell the waiter. He tests the lettuce in the back and it's all the same. At this point, my lunch hour is up.

Done.

I'm just getting into TGIFridays recently. I've probably eaten there twice in the past 6 years. One time a gnat was floating in my girlfriend's drink. We got off with paying pretty much nothing. The other time nothing special happened.

Now I go for drinks...the drinks go down smoov. Plus its less than a mile from my house. Plus the bartenders are slammin'. So I say fuck yeah to that place. You and them just aren't meant to be.

I have to admit TGIF's is hard to beat when it comes to wait staff flair. It's the sort of flair that takes your date from first base to third base by the time your done eating the potato skins with melted cheese. Place is class, it's money.

I wouldn't lump Denny's in with the others... Denny's appears to me to be more of a coffee shop...

I feel like TGIF, Applebees and Chilis is for the under 25 crowd ... when you don't make enough money to afford a really nice restaurant, so you go to these places as an in between...

I would rather drive through at Jack in the Box then eat at any of those places. I also got the worst service of my life at Applebees. I think it's a hit & miss sort of thing....somebody's always getting ready to quit or just training at these joints, so the service and food always seems off.

Teriyaki is always good.

actually, NYC doesn't have that good of food, they're not really known for it or anything. chicago owns in that department.


I haven't been to TGIFridays in years. the last time I went, the waiter said, "let me guess, a coke and a diet coke?" and we were like, "wow, yup". and I thought, "hmm, he's a good waiter". don't remember what I ate. I had the coke. I think he thought I wanted the diet though, because I was fatter than my friend. sometimes fat people drink diet drinks. I don't. I'm allergic.

As far as the shitty franchise bar/restaurant things go (Applebee's, Benningan's, TGIFridays, etc.) I tend to prefer Ruby Tuesday. Something about their hamburgers really seem pretty damn good to me.

Olive Garden is alright, but nothing special. I'm a pretty big fan of Carrabba's though.

We got some survey person calling the house once asking about fine dining. When we named the restaurants, she kept asking, "how would you compare XXX to Applebees." God I love the loaded cheese fries at Ruby Tuesday's. Sour cream + ranch = drool. And the mushroom-swiss burgers at Chilis are amazing.
