View Full Version : The democrats First 100 Hours

The newly elected democratic congress wrapped up the six-item legislative agenda they had vowed to pass in the first 100 hours of legislative business.

What are your thoughts on the new landscape in Washington DC? Is this a step in the right direction or are we just taking one step forward two steps backwards?

A quick look at the 100 hour agenda via USAToday (http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2007-01-19-first-hours_x.htm)

-Here are the bills passed under the 100-hour agenda and the votes:

-9/11 Commission recommendations

The House approved legislation 299-128 that would require increased screening of airline and port cargo and change how federal security grants are distributed. Senate Democrats are expected to propose a measure, but Republicans have raised concerns about costs. Bush opposes many of the House provisions.

-Minimum wage

The House approved legislation 315-116 that would increase the federal minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour over two years. The Senate is expected to consider a minimum wage increase as soon as next week, but is likely to include tax breaks for small businesses. Bush has said he supports tax breaks for small businesses.

-Stem cell

The House approved a measure 253-174 that would expand federal funding for embryonic stem cell research. The Senate passed a similar bill last year, but Bush vetoed it then and says he will do it again.

-Medicare

The House passed a bill 255-170 that would require the Department of Health and Human Services secretary to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies for lower drug costs under Medicare. Some key Senate Democrats have expressed reservations. Bush and federal health officials strongly oppose the measure.

-Education

The House approved legislation 356-71 to cut interest rates from 6.8% to 3.4% for subsidized student loans over five years. Senate Democrats are expected to propose a more comprehensive package. Bush opposes the measure.

-Energy

The House passed a measure 264-163 Thursday that would repeal some tax breaks to the oil and gas companies. It would shift $14 billion in revenues to research renewable energy sources. Some Senate Republicans take issue with what they call a tax increase. Bush said he opposes raising corporate taxes.

Democratic leaders promise more ahead, including lobbying changes, immigration overhauls and more energy proposals.

"Yes, we're far away from getting done, but you can't get started until you do what we've just done," said Rahm Emanuel, D-Ill., chairman of the Democratic Caucus.

They did what they said they would do, nothing earth shattering yet it just seems more in line with the workingman's day.

LOVE it. Especially repealing the tax break for the oil companies and putting it into renewable energy. Those fuckers have more money than they know what to do with, so I'm glad to see a good chunk of change coming from them and going towards something that's so desperately needed. :)

And I really hope that the student interest rates go down. *Hopefully* by this July so I can re-consolidate for less. Doubt it'll happen that soon, but I can always wish, right?

If the president has the power to veto any bill that was passed by congress, whats the point getting excited about a dems majority in both houses?

Whatever bill they pass when it goes under bush's nose he can just look at it and say 'hmmmm...... nup.'

Sorry im just trying to wrap my head around the US's wacky 'democracy'.

I'm not sure of the particulars, but yes, a President can veto any bill they don't like, but they can't do so without consequences. I think.

Any experts of the political system wanna chime in?

The big question is the senate. You can see from some of those votes that the House could override a veto with the 2/3rds majority. Can the senate?

We'll see if the president really uses the veto in these circumstances, when he can see that his own party is leaving him.

What I'd like to know is what happened to the republicans who voted the opposite way until recently. What caused the republicans who liked corporate welfare for oil companies to vote to repeal the law so soon? Why the flip flopping on minimum wage?

the first 100 hours is not setting any standard, its no suprise, its nothing special.
we are not going to see an end to corporate corruption.

we are not going to see an end to dirty lobbying

we are not going to see any significant changes whatsoever.

just more of the bickering and sorting through of weapons of mass distraction.

we need leaders committed to SERIOUS change, the type of change that is difficult and necessary, like an end to above said, like a REAL push for sustainability, support for ordinary citizens, for small farmers, small business owners, for individuals. real changes. not going to happen with the democrats either. its just a settling of the temporary fix for american addictions re: gay marriage, abortion issues, stem cells etc...

Impeachment doesn't seem realistic, because you need a solid case and irrefutable proof to do so.

I like how the Democrats are pushing through their agenda and doing what they can. Small steps back on the right track and whatnot. You can't go from being ruled by extreme right-wingers to a complete revolution in the system and a 180 change to being extreme left-wing, but you CAN make small progress, achieve small goals, and keep working your way towards what you truly want.

HUmm, i think to find such a proof would be quite easy! The problem is that nobody would listen to it of give any attention.

But i agree with drizl, the democrats being there might be a slightly improvement but still not enought to rectify the mess.

You need a drastic change and this would mean to have a complete different system of values, were $ and power are not the main focus , were prestige and social status are not the goal. A different society were the idea "par excellence" would be to be "more human" and less savage . Were helping the one in need would be a noble act and the one striving for. This society need to review her fondations and upgrade her views on things. We are in a utilitarianism mode; more good, more materiels.... We need to become more Humanism.

Democrats seem to be less evils then the republicain but maybe it is a lure, an illusion because once up there, in the "elite" that dominate the world affairs, corruption prevail.

Any Bill (proposed law) that passes in the house of representatives has to wait for a similar bill to be passed by the senate.

Then the differences in the house and senate bill are reconciled and the bill is sent to the president to sign into law.

President Bush has only used his veto once so far I think. I haven't been paying very close attention. If the president vetos something that is popular with the public, it is an opportunity for the opposing party to make a big stink about it (much like they did with his stem cell veto which helped to win a few seats in congress in the last election).

If the president vetos a law, the congress can still override his veto by voting for it again with a supermajority. Presently possible to acheive in the House but difficult to acheive in the senate.

Ergo, at the end of the day the present Democratic majority in the house of representatives amounts to precious little.

While I believe in realistic goals as much as any person, at what does drizl's idealism become warranted? Have we already gotten to that, or perhaps are things not as bad they seem?

At some point the idealism should become the objective, shouldn't it?

QueenAdrock
01-21-2007, 01:17 PM
Idealism becomes the objective once it becomes a realistic possibility. We can't feed millions of starving people; that's an idealistic goal. Solving global warming actually is a realistic possibility and the Democrats are going to tackle the problem so I don't even know what he's complaining about there:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sought last week to create a special committee to jump-start long-delayed efforts to deal with global warming and produce a bill by Independence Day.

Pelosi, D-Calif., said she would ask the House for a vote to set up the committee. She wants it to hold hearings and recommend legislation on how to reduce greenhouse gases that most scientists blame for a gradual warming of Earth's climate.

REALISTIC? what is realistic? i define realistic as what is possible. and there is much greater possibility out there than playing the game and perpetuating the system which doesnt work. proof of bush lying and running the country into the ground? there is proof everywhere. he is a lying bastard all the way through, there is proof that he is inadequate as a leader everywhere, in every word he speaks. if we can charge impeachment against clinton, im pretty damn sure bush deserves similar treatment. treason?

i can say whatever i want. REVOLUTION! YEAH! and it is already happening within me. its not about what you say, but what you feel. i feel time is coming, there will be a revolution, there will be changes, and it might not be pretty, but it will happen. it will happen everywhere. systems will fail in the face of global warming, and in the end, only the strong will survive.

and i dont expect revolution, the only thing i can expect is that this system sucks, and will suck so long as it is "working" "lying" "cheating" "stealing" "killing" "destroying" "hiding"....

we can feed millions. we can devote the billions of dollars spent on the iraq war towards greater, more idealistic goals. solving global warming is unrealistic, it is too late. the only thing we can do is lower emissions, and figure out ways to eae the transition and help the earth balance itself. there is no solving, it is a runaway train that we have to deal with- and the question we have is either making it worse, or making it better. actually feeding millions is much more realistic than stopping global warming.

I say drizl's dream is a thing of beauty, but tarnished a bit by the diatribe both are engaged in.

He's right though, the damage done by Global Warming (http://www.rutlandherald.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070121/NEWS/701210320/1030/FEATURES15)is irreversable in our lifetime.

QueenAdrock's take on the senate is also very correct. Any aggressive 180 turns on major issues will only bolster the right to take up arms and continue ardently with the same agenda they've put on course dating back to Reagan.

I personally agrre that G.W. Bush and his administration have been a party to more impeachable offences, high crimes and even higher crimes, than anything I'm aware of in American history.

However, Impeachment, is a really onerous process. Even if there was a snowballs chance in hell of getting it through the senate there is no way we would ever get it ratified by the individual states. And the process can be made to drag on and on so it would be a moot point to try to start impeaching Bush in 2007 now. I truly do hope that one day he will go to jail. I know there are people, much like myself, who have been wishing Kissinger would go to jail for decades. There are people like William Casey and Dick Nixon who very much deserved jailed time but they up and shuffled off this mortal coil before that could happen.

The unfortunate truth is that we don't have a government for and of the people. As near as I can tell it actually does opperate at the behest of some vague conspiracy of international bankers. Presidents don't get punished for betraying people, they only get punished for betraying the money, intentionally. Which this president would never do (or, I suspect, be permitted to do).

we can feed millions through raising money and food for them. devoting resources to them. we have done it before, only when its politically advantageous for us, i.e. somalia.
the fact that congress has to be "convinced" to do good things, moral things, while corrupting themselves and betraying the american people is sad, really. there are some congressfolk woh try to do good things. but when it comes down to it, they do what is popular, to survive politically, they dont take risks on good things, and follow the status quo. the only reason why they are starting to care about iraq is because the people are quite fed up with it. where were they when we went to war in the first place? why did they sign the patriot act, when it was less than perfect and not worth the risk. since then entire cities like NYC and Chicago and hundreds of others have said "fuck the patriot act". they are entirely out of touch with the people, and they have probably always been that way. so long as you have to be corrupt to be a politician and gain power, politics will corrupt.

chanting free tibet was probably one of the best things you have ever done.

Sad, but it's true. You gotta work with what you're given, that's my point. It's nice to chant things like Free Tibet, but it WON'T change Congress's opinion or stance on China. It's a lost cause. I got extremely frustrated with all of my efforts, I worked so hard and got nowhere. That's why I like to lobby for things that I can get, thus me rooting for lowered student tuition, better emission standards, more money towards renewable energy research. Stuff that we can accomplish, things that are smaller scaled and possible. It's much more satisfying to know you worked hard towards something that was realistic and your efforts were worthwhile and you see the results in the legislation that's passed.

you're the one who went out and admitted to looking at my ip address, honey.

'Scuze me? Please, show me exactly where I said "I am looking at your IP address." I DID say:

You know, the government can read this website.

Just sayin'.

Fact. When I'm on this computer, the government reads everything anyone says. I don't even know how you mistake me saying the government can read what you're saying for "I'm spying on you."

and you're boys a mod and probably has the capabilities to do so as well

No, he's not. What gave you the idea that he's a mod? Minton and TPK are the only ones who are mod's here.

and your pops works for the government and i know how you feel about my stance on touchy subjects like 9-11 and politics.

Wrong. My dad is retired from the government. Plus, he worked as a bomb specialist, what gives you the idea that he's spying on your IP address, or has the ability to? He was a CHEMIST.

Sigh.

i never said your dad was spying on me...i just know you work in and around the government, and your family is associated with the government, and you and your boy have this strange obsession with cannons.

you left out the other half of what you said:
OR JUST KEEP AN EYE ON HIS IP ADDRESS AND ITS ACTIVITIES LOLOLOLOL

Big brovah's watchin, yo.

so i took this the wrong way?

Yes, you did. I was referring to the government, as I had been earlier in the thread. "Big brovah's watchin, yo," is referring to the government.

What on earth makes you think I have capabilities to track your IP address? And what on earth makes you think that I'd warn you about me having that ability? If I really wanted to do something against you and your admission to illegal drug activities, why would I say something? Wouldn't I just keep quiet and pass your IP address on to the overlords? Common sense, mang.

And PS, what the hell does the cannon joke have to do with anything in this thread? Just hurling around immature insults in a political debate? If so, it doesn't make you better than the "dirty politicians" you so hate. They do the same mud-slinging in their political careers and it's sad.

theres nothing wrong of having a strange obsession with cannons, though it is a little weird.

software for tracking ip addresses is out there, and some moderators in message boards and forums can track your ip adress. they can find out where you live, what you do with your free time etc... so pardon the paranoia. if i took it wrong, i am sorry. i put 1+1+1+1 together and got 4. my computer has been attacked recently, by several viruses coming in through messenger and through emails, and i dont know where it came from, or who is out there trying to fuck with me. you making the ip tracking comment, working for the government, your father working for the government, and someone having pm'd me telling me your boy was a mod, you having made several posts, directed to me, telling me that "big brother, brotha, brovah" was watching me, i thought it was quite possible that you were up to something. sometimes trying to scare someone leads them to accusing you. the damage has been done, but i am sorry.

Nah, nothing wrong with taking pictures with cannons. Just something wrong about being attacked for being a "cannon smoker" because something like that could be seen as derogatory.

But big brother watches people in general, not you in particular, that's what I was trying to get across. Anything anyone says online can be monitored, so it's always a good idea to keep sensitive material to yourself. But I wouldn't take whoever PMed you seriously, because they're obviously either new here, or retarded, or both. I'm sure Brett wishes he was a mod, but he's not. I actually don't think we've had mods here since 2000 when the first board crashed, except for TPK and minton.

I'm pretty sure that the BBMB is but a minor blip on any goverment agencies radar, as far as political viewpoints go. But the NYTimes? Maybe I am hanging around the Worlds smartest and hippest people.

I've seen some pretty radical and very intelligent debates out there in the cyber-world forums, sites devoted to anti-american sentiment and individual conspiracies. The same can be said for neo hardcore conservative sites, who have no peaceful solutions. People who have dedicated their lifes to whatever their cause is. We're more of an observational sort with reactions to events.

If they are watching us I want some sort of tax rebate. We're getting gypped.

so what you are saying i sthat i am going to replace the us government with another repressive regime? possibly even more repressive? okay(y)
what have i done? well, im not here to talk about what i do with my life and i dont really care to share anything about who i am or what i do with the majority of you on the board. dont take me wrong, there are a few on the board who i really respect and would love to talk about life, love, whatever with. but you, i dont really care to be put on the stand before you or people like queen, so that you can pick it apart and turn it around on me. just trust that i care enough to spend time on here, defending my beliefs, and in real life, speaking out against the shit. i probably care a hell of a lot more than you do.

Watch it bub, or I'll use my mod-skills to blast you and your stoner paranoid mind out of my cannon into the moon!

I've got a red phone with a direct line to The White House, The Kremlin, AND tpk and Minton, so you better be afraid! (y)

drizl ain't so bad, he snaps here and there, maybe makes a few out there comments, but overall the criticism appears to me to be just insecurity and perhaps a little attention mongering on both sides.

The really important thing here is the democrats have made significant steps towards much of what BBMB members bitch about on a regular basis. I fully support the positive movement done by the democrats and am extremely frightened by George W. Bush who never ceases to amaze me in his polarizing attempts to divide this country. Today he did this (http://www.tothecenter.com/news.php?readmore=790) and tomorrow night he's going to introduce this (http://today.reuters.com/news/articleinvesting.aspx?type=governmentFilingsNews&storyID=2007-01-23T011201Z_01_N22187001_RTRIDST_0_BUSH-HEALTHCARE-UPDATE-1.XML),

I, myself am going to support any group working on slowing down this nut.

Yeah he broke it and now he's going to act like he is the one who fixed it.
And only partially fix it so that it is still worse than it was when he slithered into office.

Maybe not breaking it in the first place, meh you know what, it's a winning strategy because people have the attention spans and memory of what Fox News will show on this very topic.
