Link works, link doesn't work, link works, link doesn't work. Bah!

Rage Against the Machine, the seminal L.A. band that made heavy music into political manifesto, will reunite after a seven-year lull for one show as the headliners at the 2007 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival.

Sources say Rage, which played the main stage at the first Coachella in 1999, will be joined by other familiar faces for the eighth edition of the festival, which covers three days this year and begins April 27: Red Hot Chili Peppers, which headlined in 2003, are back, as is Björk, who topped the bill in 2002.

Organizers were mum this weekend and it was not clear which day Rage or the other acts were slotted to play; that announcement is expected in the next few days. Other acts expected in the eclectic lineup: Arcade Fire, Interpol, Willie Nelson, the Roots, Manu Chao, the Decemberists, Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, Crowded House, Air, Tiësto and Kings of Leon.

Tickets go on sale Saturday, via Ticketmaster. Three-day passes will cost about $250 and there will be a limited number of single-day passes available.

The headliners are not novel, but they are potent. The Peppers are up for their first best album Grammy right now, and Björk remains a mesmerizing figure to fans of avant pop. But in Southern California rock circles, there is very little that could compete with the excitement of a Rage Against the Machine reunion. The quartet's hybrid of funk, rap, metal and leftist ideology was as subtle as a Molotov cocktail; in the 1990s, its aggro-anthems made it the only band that mattered to a fan base that included East L.A. protest kids as well as those in Hollywood punk circles, college dorms and mainstream rock festival mosh pits, where politics were secondary to the group's feral energy.

The band is vocalist Zack de la Rocha, guitarist Tom Morello, bassist Tim Commerford and drummer Brad Wilk. Their split came amid rumors of bad blood between De la Rocha and his mates, who went on to work with Chris Cornell in Audioslave. However, Morello and De la Rocha appeared together at a 2005 rally for the urban farmers of a South Los Angeles community garden.

I guess I'm too mainstream, or it's becasue I listen to only 6 bands and that's it, but I could never see myself sitting through that much music I've never heard of.

I can't handle sitting through a 30 minute opening act, I definitely couldn't see myself sitting through 12 hours of it.

i wonder how this was set up.. apparently they were offered a huge amount of money to do one show at some point last year.. tom seemed to have flatly rejected it though.

I would love to see them - my first band really.. can't really shell out $350 canadian.. plus cross continent plane ticket and accomodation.

Maybe zack will bust out some of the rhymes he's been keeping for his "solo project"...?

while the rage reunion is cool and all, there just seems to be no point.

sure, it's gonna sell the fuck out of tickets so from that standpoint it's genius.

I just don't feel like Rage is relevant anymore, this comes off like a novelty.

I saw them live in 1999 on what ended up being their final full tour.

Gang Starr opened. It was tight.

Then I had tickets to the Rage/BBoys tour but.... yeah.

I totally disagree. If anything, the world is in more of a mess than when Rage was in their hey day. Besides, I don't get the feeling this is a show strictly for politics. There'll probably be some anti-Bush shit in there...but I think this is something for the fans.

I posted this over here (http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showpost.php?p=1464142&postcount=22639). :( I'm sure paulb can give you a much better review. He was in a much better spot in the crowd. I'm quite jealous. But I am proud of myself that I survived this. Shit was nuts. I was literally scared of the crowd throughout the set. :(

"Rage Against The Machine! I'd been dying for this moment, but honestly when the crowd filled up and I noticed a heavy concentration of shirtless sweaty drunk dudes with tribal tats and hemp necklaces, I began to worry and yeah... as soon as RATM took the stage it became one of the most uncomfortable environments. I got so pissed and felt like I'm not going to let these shitheads ruin this moment for me so I tried to rock out, found myself shoving big dudes outta my way, getting elbowed in the head and shit... one even grabbed my ass and was like 'oh honey you are strong' and I was like 'yeah and I'm going to kill you if you don't stop it'... fuck it was annoying and awful... but I was impressed that rage's performance was so tight having been the first one in a mighty long time. It was special despite the lamest crowd ever. I'm still sore though from beating up all the assholes."

According to a co-worker of mine (whose family is allegedly tight with Zack) he's bankrupt, so that motivated him to do some shows.

I haven't heard a single thing about this anywhere else, and it just seems a bit fishy to me. I don't really buy it, but I just thought I'd throw that out there.
