I'm glad Gosling got on there. And I haven't seen Little Children yet, but Jackie Earle Haley was always aces.

Greenglass as best director for United 93 is at least a nod; that's cool. The Prestige for cinematography... good. How they missed the Fountain for best score, I don't know.

The Oscars suck. Penelope Cruz is the worst actress ever.
I've only seen Prestige and the Black Daliah, both of which I liked but this list is a little low on substance considering some prior candidates. It would be fun to see Borat get an Oscar, though...

The Oscars suck.

Nooooooo! They are my guilty pleasure.

I would like Kate Winslet to finally be recognised with a win, but i think Helen Mirren may win best actress in a leading role.

Jackie Earle Haley for best supporting actor.

I can't really comment on the best film of the year because i haven't seen any of them! BUT i think Babel will scoop that.

The Oscars are kind of maddening because they combine some good choices with really sucky ones. I think this year's list is pretty good.

Haven't seen The Black Delilah, but if you don't think The Prestige should've gotten the nominations it did -- cinematography and art direction -- then you might've missed something. It's not like it got nominated for best picture; the nominations it did get were areas where it genuinely did excel.

Right, it was also one of only a handful movies that motivated me to go to the cinema instead of a bar on a tuesday evening.
I hope Helen Mirren wins best actress even though she's prolly twice as old as her competition.
Anyone seen Blood Diamond? It seems to be the default conscience flick in some categories...

That's one of the few locks this year. Unless she does something genuinely repugnant between now and ballot-casting, it's hers.

Plus she was great. (y)

I don't think she's older than Dench, by the way. Probably about the same age as Streep.

it was a mediocre year for me, i have seen 3 of the movies nominated for anything on that list, so i am pretty clueless

they are screening that iraq documentary here on thursday, and the school had a sign up to get a free thai dinner before watching the movie for free, so i'm hoping that i get to go.

Will Smith is in a movie called The Pursuit of Happyness. The last time I checked it was spelled Happiness. Did they have to put the Y in? I guess they thought it would be a good idea or nobody would know that Happy was in the title.

I want Forrest Whitaker to win. I have not seen The Last King of Scotland but his transformation from Jefferson in Fast Times at Ridgemont High to Idi Amin is nothing short of miraculous.

It's spelled that way because, in the movie, part of how he knows his son is in a shitty preschool is that they have a sign outside the building which misspells the word, and he keeps trying to get it corrected.

I don't think that's a good reason to misspell the title, but that's why it's there.

Thanks for shedding light on the subject. That explains it and now it won't bother me when I see the title. I won't see the film until it is in the video store.

Is it an Oscar worthy performance?

WAHLBERG FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR!!

im so glad he's there...he's excellent in The Departed.

WHITAKER FOR BEST ACTOR OSCAR!!

O'Toole will get it for oul times sake, but i'd love to see Forest get it...

And finally, GIVE SCORCESE HIS FUCKING OSCAR.

that is all.

Whitaker has been sweeping it everywhere else, but I have a feeling O'Toole is going to get it. They handed him an honorary Oscar and he explicitly said he still hoped to win one in competition someday; this is probably his last chance.

And, yeah -- Scorsese will get his this year. He's finally made a good enough movie in these last few can-I-have-one-this-year? bids that the timing is right.

eastwood is great but he's won enough oscars already. give it to scorscese. and the academy really ought to get around to giving david lynch a lifetime achievement award. go gore go. obviously when the levees broke couldn't receive a nomination, because it was an hbo broadcast, so i want to see gore get his just deserts. for best pic i'm hoping for babel or the departed, but you just know that iwo jima or the queen is going to win best picture. the academy just loves eastwood and patriotic fests, but i really hope it's not the queen. i could care less about stuffy rich people who do nothing at the very top of an irrelevant and grossly outdated neo-colonial institution. and not only should mel gibson receive the shaft, but so should pirates of the carribean, ie pointless crap.

Martin Scorsese and Peter O'Toole have become the Susan Lucci of the Oscars. I too, am a huge sucker for the Oscars and this year is head and shoulders above last year. Little Miss Sunshine rocked, Babel, Flags and a whole slew of other movies I haven't seen yet...that I will once the Oscars is over.

Scorsese just rocks IMO, he loves making movies and I love watching movies he makes. His Mom chips in around the set and his soundtracks are impeccable. Like Rupert Pupkin from the King of Comedy says, "Better to be king for a night than a schmuck for a lifetime".

Peter O'Toole? Not giving him an Oscar is akin to letting the terrorists win.

I didn't like Dreamgirls. I don't feel sorry enough for Eddie Murphy yet to be rooting for him, but he sure must want the oscar to grovel for it on Oprah. Doesn't it bother anyone that the music in Dreamgirls is pretty awful? It made me want to listen to some Motown so bad. The costumes and makeup were super though.

The only movie I flat out loved was the Queen, but I didn't see many of the others.

Having now seen Venus, I'm think O'Toole won't get it. I still haven't seen Last King of Scotland, though, but I'm guessing it's Whittaker's to lose.
