I guess if theres anything good in a situation like that, albeit its shrouded by tragedy....going that way would be instant. You're there one second, gone the next.

I'm pretty sure one of Susan's punk friends was hit by a train and only lost one leg. You can survive something like that. Have you talked to the family much? Maybe you should give them a call.

wow, that sucks
although i'm curious as to how one gets hit by a train?
like is this out in the country? are the no fences blocking access to the tracks?
was it at a crossing? isn't there flashing lights and ding ding things?

Having nothing to do with this particular incident because we don't know what happened, or whether he was in a car, etc.
In the US, I think people believe that trains are some quaint relic of the past, but truth is that we are getting a rapidly-increasing number of trains, and at the same time there is less funding for train safety.
We've got a lot of tracks not far from my house and the trains are usually moving super slow, and often the lights are flashing when the train is actually parked down the tracks. So people don't take the lights seriously. I've seen many people drive their cars across the tracks while barely pausing to see where the train is. I feel like an idiot when I pull up, stop, and peek around the corner while other fools are passing me on my right. But then I think of how stupid I'd feel if I was hit by a train because I ignored the lights.
In the city, we've got people who stop their cars on train tracks while waiting for a traffic light. Bad idea.

I am very sorry to hear about this, it hits me quite personally since my brother was killed by a train in 85 (he was 21). I still remember that day like it was yesterday =(
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family, if you want to chat privately about this feel free anytime.
It is alarming how many people are injured or killed by trains...walking tracks is still popular but with headphones, daring behavior, or failed judgement at a train's speed or the distance from the tracks can be exceptionally dangerous.
PLEASE NOBODY EVER WALK ON TRAIN TRACKS!
hang in there

I've heard a few times of people getting hit by trains and surviving. One guy who was hit got the hand from his left arm put onto his right arm, which has only been done a handful of times before.
Either way, I hope he's okay! It's a good possibility he will be, just keep thinking positive.

Given the context of this topic, that statement shouldn't have been so funny.
If you did it intentionally, you are my new favorite pun artist.

My friend's daughter was hit by a train when she was 13 (well, she jumped actually). She lost one leg and got a several headinjury that was bleeding a lot. Luckily the hospital was very near by, if she'd been there 20 minutes later she'd been dead. Now she's 21, married, has a four year old kid and last autumn she got this screw on her hip where she can attach her artificial leg, much better and less painful than the harness she had use. I think she was the 14th in the world (or Scandinavia, ain't quite sure) to get that done.
bionic, I hope your cousin will be alright. (y)
