That's the easy sell. Christians often misrepresent things to try to close the deal.

Yes, God loves and Jesus commands us to love one another, love our enemies, etc. But God hates sin, God condemns the unrepentant to hell, and according to the Bible, has presdestined some to not repent. How that works with free will is kind of a mystery, but it's addressed in the book of Romans.

I think the very first mention of God hating someone is the passage in Genesis about how God hated Essau but loved Jacob.

Christians pick on homosexuals excessively because it's a sexual sin and kind of an easy sin, because homosexuality statistically is fairly rare, so it's kind of "safe." The fact is, yeah, passages in scripture to condemn unrepentant homosexuals, but also drunkards, liars, people who mistreat their employees, etc. In JUST AS HARSH TERMS. But since most of us do those other things to one degree or another, it's more comforting to brush that off and wag our fingers at the sins we don't do and feel accordingly superior.
