I was CPR certified 2004 - 2005. I need to get re-certified. It's funny though, because it was for a health class in college and they didn't want people sharing germs so instead of creating an actual seal around the mouth of the dummy and breathing out, we had to put our lips down to the dummy's mouth and say "breathe, breathe" to let them know we did two breaths. I did it so many times I wonder if I'd do that to someone actually in need of CPR.

Carry around a mouth guard with you. They fit in your wallet.
People should be trained not only in CPR but how to use an AED as well. I believe most CPR classes teach AED at the sametime. Try to get one that might be teaching basic first aid as well.
Simple classes that can make a big difference in your life if called upon to use them.
And if you are scared to bust someones rib while performing CPR and then being sued, most states have laws that will protect you now.
I start EMT training this summer. Should be very interesting.

Yeah, when a baby's choking, they really have you beat the hell out of the baby's back for the Heimlich. I was like...do I really have to hit them that hard? And they said Yeah, of course! It's the only way to dislodge what's caught. I felt like a child abuser. :(
I'm still certified in First Aid until May. I need to find somewhere to get recertified for both, and for cheap!

I thought breathing in didn't help at all.

I was told it's more important to get air in than the object out.
But either way, CPR only works about 50% of the time, and only 50% of the people who survive that actually stay okay on the way to/in the hospital. So success rates hover around 25%. Discouraging, but I still think it's worth it to learn.

my paramedic buddy has the best stories
plus I always go out drinking with him because I feel just that much safer if at some point I end up swallowing my tongue

I wonder if there was ever a time where a girl had given someone a blowjob and moments later giving some guy mouth to mouth. Would be hilarious.

I am sure that Anna Nicole Smith had this experience with J. Howard Marshall II.
