...so this guy I was talking to at the bus stop: he said he was thinking about getting a tattoo this weekend. Oh yeah? I says. Of what? He said he didn't know.
Yikes. Is that how some people get tattoos? I know some folks get drunk and get a tattoo on a whim, but I always figured it was a design they'd wanted for a while but never got up the nerve, etc. etc.
I can't even fathom getting a tattoo that I hadn't settled on for a long, long time.

My friend just got back from a 4-month trip in Europe and he was telling me he met a New Zealander in Morocco. The New Zealander told him of a time he got really drunk and was hanging out with some sort of gang, he woke up in the morning with a lower back tattoo that said "The Boys." Apparently it means he's accepted by the gang. Either way, that's pretty funny.

Sounds like the Lord of the Rings cast. I think McClellan's is on his butt.
the weird thing is, this guy talked about how he's given tattoos to other people, this three-needle technique he does for greater control, etc. You'd think he'd have given this more thought already.
It just occurred to me that maybe he does know, but it's private. "I Heart Yaks" or something.
I remember going to friends bachelor party. We were all at the strip club and nobody knew what happened to Don. He had just got back from the Desert Storm (Bush Sr's escapade into the middle east). He came in about 45 minutes later with a fresh tattoo. It was some kind of Marines tattoo with Semper Fi. Most tattoo parlors will not do one if the client is drunk or looks to be under the influence of drugs.
When I got my tattoo the artist was showing me photos of his favorite tattoos then he started laughing and showing me a horrible one of The Brick Oven. He said some real rednecky kid came in with a bad drawing of a brick oven with smoke coming out. He was a cook at some chain restaurant called the Brick Oven and wanted the tattoo. Lil Anthony said he would not do it because the drawing was horrible and he did not want to draw it himself. The guy kept giving him shit so he went ahead and put it on the guy's arm just as he had drawn the picture. It looked like a 1st grader had made it in class.
He also told me about a crazy friend that had him put a huge black Jesus on his entire back. The funny thing was that the guy was white but loved Lil Anthony's artwork (Anthony is black). It was an awesome piece but the client that got the tattoo was odd.
Tattoo artists have all kinds of wild stories I bet.

21!? I would think 18 would make more sense. But okay.

I got my first one on a whim too at age 19. I was on a weekend road trip with a friend from college and we wanted to do something kinda wild and crazy to commemorate our trip.
I picked a small kanji symbol meaning elegance from the flash on the wall. it's about the size of a quarter. My friend picked a rose, but that was also her last name so that made sense...she however had never planned ot get a tat at all. it's still the only one she has.
Then one time I was waiting to get into a night club and we were in line forever and there was this tatoo shop right next to the club. I already knew I wanted a asain dragon to go with my kanji so got it. that was random. and all my friends who were totally wasted came to watch and they were obnoxious so the tattoo artist kicked them out. hah.

i've always kind of hated most tattoos, but there is one that i've wanted for a really long time and am waiting until at least my birthday (in May) to get. just the words "get up" on my wrist. very small. ugh, when i saw this girl that i can't stand has AWESOME on her wrist in big black letters it was a total bonerkiller. that's why i'm waiting to make sure i reeaaaally want it. i draw it on my wrist every few days to make sure i'm committed to it. that and all the people my age that get things just because they're trendy. fuck, do you really want a goddamn swallow or anchor or razor on your vein when you're 50 just because that was cool to your friends back then? if it means something to you, sure, but christ i hate the rockabilly tats.
