WASHINGTON (AP) -- Archaeologists have uncovered what may have been a village for workers or festival-goers near the mysterious stone circle Stonehenge in England.

The village was located at Durrington Walls, about two miles from Stonehenge, and is also the location of a wooden version of the stone circle.

Eight houses have been excavated and the researchers believe there were at least 25 of them, archaeologist Mike Parker Pearson said Tuesday at a briefing held by the National Geographic Society.

The village was carbon dated to about 2600 B.C., about the same time Stonehenge was built. The Great Pyramid in Egypt was built at about the same time, said Parker Pearson of Sheffield University.

Interesting.

why wouldn't they have found that earlier?

Dunno. It was an excavation, but I don't know if that means the markers were there and the site was just recently excavated or what.

Evidently somebody finally lost their contact lens in just the right spot, though.

I just figured since stone henge has been this big mystical mystery for so long, they would've probed the area with x-ray land lasers within a 20 mile radius by now. but that's just me. I guess x-ray land lasers are pretty expensive :(

Yeah, that's kinda surprising they just found it now. But that's also pretty cool, too.

Yup.

I dunno. Maybe we've got more pyramids to find, yet. Other than historical documents, I don't know how you'd know that something "used to be there."

Lasers! come on!

I should tell my friend to get back on the archeology wagon. he's been working in market research. but hey! there's plenty of excavating to be done, clearly.
