It's just showing how pathetic the situation is in Iraq and how desperate we need people to join up.

What gets me now are the ones with the kids talking to their parents telling them all of the advancements in their future they can gain if they joined. The ones that show only the parent's speechless view with the kids talking to them.

If I were a parent now with a kid who's old enough to join the military and they're trying to give me this shit about how much they want to join, I'd be calling Green Acres to tell them to bring a van and a straight jacket.

What even makes me LOL the most is the Army. It seems that they've changed their logo once again to "Army Strong". While I was in, it used to be the good ole "Be all you can be". It then changed to an army of one.. Hahaha, how many times will they change their logo till they decide that it doesn't matter?

We were talking about that at work the other week. How it's "Be all that you can be," "Army strong" and "An army of one" in the past and they continue to change it. I personally think they should have a slogan along the lines of "Army: Because your stories of how you lost your arm will get you respect from men and sympathy sex from women," because it's fairly true and appealing. More appealing than just saying you'll gain skills and discipline. Or saying that you "Get more done before 9 AM than most people do all day," because come on, America's lazy.

my dad is a vet, and if i was even remotely serious about joining the army he would have broken both my legs to stop me.

Its annoying when they call your house. They ask you all these questions even though you tell them your not going to join they keep going. They ask about my weight, height, eye site, health and so on and then you can tell they get all excited when I answer and want to talk in person. I just tell them i'm really busy. I suppose next time they call i will tell them i'm 4' 210lbs and am blind with a gimp leg. Maybe they will shut up. (n)

Yeah, my dad's friend was 6'4 and the army didn't have any kind of uniform that was his size, so he was automatically exempt from the 'Nam draft. That, and he was a damn dirty stinkin' hippie.

Tis the exact same reason why I'm posting this thread. Even though I'm a vet, have been to war for my country.. I needn't explain when I went to war and where because I might have already on this board.. Somewhere.

While first joined, it was to get rid of a bad drug habit and also because I wanted to to my share to help the nation. The first gulf war had just ended when I joined too so I just joined with the thought of being ready when things might go down.

I really wish I would have still been in during the tsunami and Katrina. I would have felt great to help people out. But yet, during the same time, Bush's shit was going on.

Right now if anyone joins, they surely know where they're going to spend the first months of their career. Which makes these commercials even more pissed off. The military is a real good thing but, not right now.

I dont' even think that matters anymore. You can probably show up in any recruiting station with a pair of leotards and a lisp and they'd gladly accept ya.

You said it brother! If any of my younger siblings or kids ever tell me they wanna join the military I'll beat them sensless. I'm doing my time cus I made the choice to and now have to stick with it but damnit this is truly a shitty time to be part of the military. Buget cuts are killing us and the mission requirments continue to grow. So now we're supposed to do more with less. I woulda considered staying in but I'm not giving them them 12 more years if at least 3 or 4 of them are going to be spent in Iraq. It's a hundred times worse for the Army/Marines too...poor bastards

Also the Air Force commercials make me want to throw my TV out the window. "Do something Amazing!" Like you can just walk up to any recruiter station and be like "Yeah I'd like to fly F-16s, sign me up!" and it's done

I just saw one (I think in Newsweek?) that gave me pause, because it was directed at parents. Like, "When your son or daughter says they want to join the army, be proud and supportive!" The fact that the military would have to urge parents not to be horrified is pretty telling.

None of these (http://www.slate.com/id/2124786/sidebar/2124787/) is the one I saw, but yikes!

Where are the commericals directed towards those that can pay for college?

"NEW ENGLAND"
Dad:"Son, I got you an "interview" with the Dean at Harvard. I spoke with him when we played golf last week."
Son:"Thank you father but I have other ideas about college."
Dad:"What ideas and how does that work with our plan?"
Son:"I want real life skills dad. I want to work with real people and see the world"
Dad:"Wasn't that summer trip your mom and I paid for last year to Europe good enough?"
Son:"No dad. I want to do it on my own and for my country."
Dad:"I'm proud of you son."
V/O:"Army. Be all that you can be" mellow trumpet music

I thought about joining the air force so I could learn to fly planes. I didn't want to go to war though. my childhood best friend joined the army, went into psy ops. I haven't seen her or talked to her in years though. I hope she's okay. She joined because she wanted money for college, and to get the fuck away from her nutty family.

That's EXACTLY what I'm talking about. No one on the enlisted side of the Air Force comes even remotely close to flying an airplane of any sort. You have to be an officer, go to flight school and a whole mess of other shit before you get to set foot in a plane. The commercials lead you to believe that the average schmuck off the streets can just go join up and a few weeks later is tearin up the sky in their jet

my uncle has been in the airforce since he was 20 (a good 40 years?) and he's never flown a plane ever, or done anything to do with planes.

I go to a high school in North Carolina that has a JROTC program that is supposed to be one of the best in the country. Once a week people in it have to wear their uniform, so it's easy to see who's in the program for me.

It's funny though because they say they hold high standards for the Army and stuff but most of the kids in JROTC are some of the worst behaved kids and have terrible grades.

I know lots of kids who are going into the Army after high school and I just think it's sad how they are kind of throwing away their live :(

Yeah I don't think anyone had anticipated going back to Iraq three different times after enlisting. It's also sad that one of my acquaintences joined after the new occupation by choice. I don't get it.

The Army/Air Force used to come off as a place that more of the booksmart/athletic H.S. graduates would go to for extra monet for college. Now it seems as though it's full of hillbilly midwesterners who worship Limp Bizkit and Godsmack. This is a completely biased opinion based on people I've met so take that how you want to.

You see some poorly behaved kids in JROTC because that's one of the "military schools" parents threaten their kids with if they don't behave.

Believe me bro, I've been out since 2002 and I've noticed a huge change. It's all due to the droppings of standards and requirements just to send warm bodies with a pulse to Iraq.
