Is it just me or does this remind you of that Robin Williams movie that came out recently : Man of the Year.
We'll see what stand he takes on the issues, but expect plenty of this : http://home.hawaii.rr.com/snlcn/franken/stuart.html
Stuart Smalley Rides Again!

True, except "Man of the Year" wasn't as patently absurd a premise as it could be, considering real-life events (Reagan, Schwarzenegger).

Anyways, Franken's no Jon Stewart...
Franken was a failure as a radio host and, I predict, will be a failure as a candidate.
But he was great on SNL!;)

Failure as a candidate? I sincerely doubt it. If Republican Arnie can win the entire state of California, Franken's got a fantastic chance of winning in Minnesota. Especially since it's a blue state.
I always hated Stuart Smalley, but I read of an awesome gag he pulled when his first child was born - he wrapped up a doll and was bringing it to the rest of the cast members waiting eagerly to see his new child (he told them he'd be bringing her in) and with a great big grin on his face he "accidentally" misjudges the door frame and hit the doll's head on it and fumbles her. All the cast members screamed, thinking they were witnessing the accidental death of his firstborn. ahahahhaha

Franken's no Arnie.
Franken's goofy looking and his politics are not in line with the majority of voters in Minnesota.
New York? New Jersey? Massachusetts? maybe....
Not Minnesota.

Name recognition > goofy looking
Positions are important, but I would argue the main thing that got Arnie elected over Democrat was the fact that he was famous. I'm sure the Democrat was more in-line with what most of California wanted, but Arnie's got more name recognition which put him over the top. Franken's not THAT far out of line with Minnesota's politics, seeing as how they voted for Kerry in 2004 and Gore in 2000.
He's a comedian much like Stewart, in that he pokes fun at the right and does a good job of it. A lot of people connect laughter and enjoyment with his name. Just like I think Stewart could pull it off, I think Franken can too.

I'd vote for Stewart way before Franken.
I'll buy you a beer if Franken wins elective office as a Senator from the state of Minnesota, k?
If he doesn't, you remember to come back here and admit you were wrong.
Fair enough?

Nuh-uh, no way. We'll have to have the same thing.
If I win, beer on you and you say you're wrong.
If you win, beer on me and I say I'm wrong.
Either way, both will have to do with admitting defeat and free beer. (y)

It will be a tough race no matter who the democrats choose. Coleman is a scumbag but he's very good at hiding it because he comes across as young and likeable. His biggest liability has been his closeness to Bush. Coleman has been one of Bush's most loyal lapdogs. But Coleman's trying to distance himself from Bush all of a sudden.
The hardest part for Franken will be getting the DFL nomination. Depends on who else runs and whether Franken scares them off because he can raise more money. You can always count on some liberal crackpots to run for the DFL nomination though --even if they don't have a chance.
If you haven't spent time listening to Franken's show, you have no idea what he's about. He's solidly in the center on the issues, and he has a knack for explaining things so they sound like common sense. He's been working his ass off for Minnesota DFL candidates in backwater areas of the state for some time. I've seen him at fairs and parties and local diners. If voters get to know him, he could win. The question is whether it's possible for voters to get to know him.

Al does have another side to him than smarmy. I wish him and Minnesota much success.

LOL, that guy owes you a brew. Sam i am also argued with me a few years ago that I was all fucked up because I wrote that the Bush administration was seeing a record number in foreclosures in the housing market.
He told me the housing market was in the greatest shape ever since the history of the USA began. How does one argue with that logic, I hate to say "I told you so' but even then many were thinking along the same lines, Bush's economics were, are and continue to be a runaway train on a steady momentum into a granite wall.

Wow, I pretty much nailed it. It was the MN democrats who almost took him down, not Coleman. A bunch of bitchy democrats campaigned against him and then decided to send a message by voting for the third-party candidate. Fuckers.
If Al beats Coleman in the court fight, those same bitchy democrats will be kissing Al's ass.
