View Full Version : recommend me some shoes
i need shoes, decent-looking casual shoes. not a sneaker. brown, preferably, something that would look good with either khakis or jeans (since those are all i wear, black shoes are out per my understanding)
i don't know what i'm doing with shoes, quite honestly. i just want an average casual shoe, something nice, but not too nice. is it a bad thing if they're shiny? i'd feel weird wearing very shiny shoes every day, but i dunno if that's a faux pas or not, because i don't know anything about shoes
so, all you people who know things about men's shoes, point me in the direction of something to buy, something i could wear to school every day. preferably not much more expensive than $100.
maybe some pants too
and some shirts
no, see, that's the problem, i can't tell good shoes from crap shoes
that's where you come in, i could have done that myself

just stick to name brands, dude
shit. not that hard
again, that's the problem, i don't know what i'm doing when i buy shoes, so my preference doesn't count for much, i want to go by other people's preference instead

well do what i do.... spend at least 50 bucks
that's what i was thinking about shiny shoes, yeah. it seems like a bit much for day-to-day wearing
pictures would be nice.
i'm looking around on timberland's website, but i dunno. i think i like some of the stuff, but it seems a bit heavy, too boot-like, but i really wouldn't know. it is timberland though.
what about these?

i think they look alright, but then again, i don't think i'd know a crap shoe if it kicked me in the ass, so i dunno, i'm looking for advice. i don't know much about dressing myself
oh, and i'm a size 13, so that limits my options somewhat

I like Steve Madden.
http://www.stevemadden.com/category.asp?id=145
I've got some that look kinda like the "gammon" but are a couple years old. I like the Klipper there too.
Stay away from shiny.
How about a pic of you in some "everyday" type clothing.
Bob, I like the fact that you are thinking of Timberlands. I have a pair of Timbs like these but brown... http://www.timberland.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2363249&cp=1779791.1761081.1761135.1761154&parentPage=family

These are actually decent. I could see them in brown being nice and I wonder if they make a charcoal grey color.
Just kidding about my boots though. I couldn't see anybody wearing those big ass clod hoppers as casual. Except for maybe...... Mosh Girl.

If you're not used to wearing them, they could possibly snag on some cracks. I wear those damn boots so much that it's like walking barefoot to me though.
The first time I've seen those sole were from a pic of Adrock but I can't remember if I saw it on a T-shirt or a magazine but he's got his sole pointed right at the camera.

I am sorry that I got involved in this thread. I am quite frankly offended. I am going to put on my Timberlands and take my baby out to eat some pork barbeque. If we aren't too full from the pork we might go rope some cows and listen to some George Strait.

The Pumas and Rockports are great shoes, I can walk around town all day in them. The diesel' shoe is always very cool looking, I'll probably never buy a pair again because the one pair I have hurt my feet.
For everyday brown shoes under $100, go with Rockports. Timberland is an extremely close second. Merrell (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.bennettsclothing.com/merrell_passport_redwood.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.bennettsclothing.com/mens_merrell_footwear.htm&h=340&w=500&sz=70&hl=en&start=5&tbnid=GQVKtve9z3todM:&tbnh=88&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3DMerrell%2B%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26s a%3DG) is right up there too.
Italian Leather shoes (http://www.italianmoda.com/italian-shoes.htm) dominate the upper end of cool, pretty spendy but they last forever and are usually very comfortable.
I'm a shoe nut, I always have a pair in a box at home new and ready to go.

I say keep it simple. go for a nice rich brown, something classic that is well made. slip on shoes can be okay, but don't fall for trends. I wouldn't suggest buying shoes online, you should go try them on and stuff. Kenneth Cole isn't too bad, they usually have those in malls. I suppose you could go to a department store and ask for help. tell them you want classy and stylish. ask a girl to help you. not a hippie!

I'm just sayin', I work with homos in a homo neighborhood and those kind of shoes are running rampant.
I'm not trying to start a fight, different things are popular in different places. the type of shoes I'm trying to pick out for Bob should be timeless. not something he'll look back at in 5-10 years and think, "yuck, I wore those?!"

I'm getting way too into this.
I think I might like those shoes enough to get some. me and my dad used to have shoes just like that when I was a little. we also wore lacoste polo shirts and OP shorts. no joke. my dad was magnum P.I. order me a size 7 please and thank you.

Your Bostonians story reminds me there is nothing worse than an ill fitting pair of shoes. You might want to invest in a shoe stretcher, or donate those and get a pair that fit.

why on earth would shoes like that require laces? And...what's the deal with all those little metal hole things?
I don't get it.
hmph. THEY ARE CLASSICS! look at that structure! look at the stitching! the richness of the leather and the tone of the sole!
whatever, I'm getting them and I'm gonna wear them and people are gonna be like, "what the? wait a minute, those shoes rule! are you going sailing later?! awesome!" and I'll be like
I mean, bob will. what?
mars, those are a decent shape, but I don't much care for that waxy dull finish. it seems kinda 90's and prone to scuffage. I had some mary jane docs with a finish like that in high school and they were a doozy to keep looking nice.

those are fine, cool dudes wear those kinds of shoes. I never really cared too much for that style when it first came out, but I've come around to it in recent years. I like this one. (http://ipath.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=3CAT20-SADL&Category_Code=cats)
although I think the style sazi and gareth endorse is a little more classic for bob.

If your going to school in Boston sometimes you can get pegged into just another schlep trying to get along without anyone noticing. I would err on the adventurous side if I were you Bob and perhaps enjoy your college years, maybe get a little action on the side, if you know what i mean.
These shoes can make it happen. (http://www.motorcowboy.com/category/kissboots/)

oh you wanted brown (http://media.kohls.com.edgesuite.net/is/image/kohls/181219_Dark_Brown?wid=400&hei=400&op_sharpen=1). $54 out the fucking door.

see, this is why i chose my particular links. dorothy wouldn't know what law school student shoes are. i do. also, i was trying to stick with the whole getting away from tennis shoes thing.
i will say this -- if everyone agrees on one thing and one person vehemently denies any value to something everyone else suggests, based on links that you posted of a style you were looking into, how is the one person suddenly right and everyone else is wrong?

whatever, I'm getting them and I'm gonna wear them and people are gonna be like, "what the? wait a minute, those shoes rule! are you going sailing later?! awesome!" and I'll be like
are you going to do the laces so it's two spirals instead of a loop? that's what we always did. BACK IN THE 80'S.

are you going to do the laces so it's two spirals instead of a loop? that's what we always did. BACK IN THE 80'S.
duh, of course. hey, I told you my dad and I used to wear those shoes. in the 80's. I'm old enough and had enough wits about me to remember what fashion was like.
also, I agreed with your shoes being good, I just thought they were kinda fancy. Kenneth Cole makes a decent shoe. your style's a little more slick and expensive-looking than most people I think or bob, in this case. and I know what law students wear, I went to college. and I've lived in different regions of the U.S., I've been to different countries. I aced a history of western dress class. I've always been known for my inherent sense of style, going all the way back to elementary school.
nobody's even considering bob here, really. you're all just putting what kind of shoes you like. no offense. it's a part of my job to assess people's tastes and choose what will best suit them. I can tell by a woman's purse what she'll like and approximately how much she'll spend. I turned my ex's wardrobe around and taught him how to do his hair better and he still thanks me to this day. and I still cut his hair.
I guess my point is: I AM ALL KNOWING.

i'm not saying you don't know fashion (though sometimes your style is a little eclectic) and i'm not saying you didn't go to college. but law school is a little different, and i'm just trying to get bob some shoes that can be worn with jeans, business casual, or even with a suit. i went with multipurpose.
i did go to a bit of a snotty law school though, so that could be where the slick and expensive part comes in. the parking lot was pretty much porsche, mercedes, lexus, bmw and cadillac SUVs. a car thief's wet dream.

if you think about it, most of the top name designers, male and female are 30+ and they are the ones who set the trends for people all over the world, and then high street stores copy the trends to sell to the general public.
you think your opinion is better than everyone elses because your friends are always complimenting the way you dress? you're not the only person to get compliments. you pride yourself on being 'scenester' and that you only respect the opinions of like minded people, you only make friends with/make time for people who are like minded i.e like the same music, same clothes, hang out at the same places and same interests as you. when you disagree with someone's opinion, you lose the respect you had for them. because you think you 'know all'.
you think your opinion is better than everyone else here because you went to college to study fashion? well i had a friend who worked as a freelance stylist for several top fashion magazines here. her job was to dress and prepare models for the magazines' photoshoots and the pictures would feature in those magazines. she did this for several years, but she studied journalism at uni, so that's proof enough that you don't necessarily need to have a degree in fashion or design to know a thing about style. she loved it and only stopped doing the stylist job and worked in PR because there was more money to be made in PR.
my explanations maybe wordy but what else, if not words, are you expecting? this is an internet message board. london has a population of over 7 million residents and is very diverse in culture, race, religions, class, etc. not only that but it is also one of the most popular places for tourists from all over the world, so i don't need to live in other countries to appreciate different styles. that's why i said that there's nothing wrong with any of the shoes posted on here because i know that there will be people from other parts of the world who would be wearing them. i didn't sit in a class room to learn about fashion but i did work in a fashion store (topshop/topman in oxford circus) and got my experience there. now that is a high street chain store, but it was the flagship store - meaning it was the biggest of that chain and whatever sells well in that store would be sold in all the other smaller stores within that chain. it is the biggest store in that chain but, i don't know if it is anymore, but it was also the largest fashion store in the world, located in the heart of the busiest high street in the world. the designer flag ship stores are located in Bond Street, New Bond Street, Sloane Street, Knightsbridge and King's Road, which are all within walking distance. the London College of Fashion was a minutes walk away from where i worked and a few roads down is St Martins' College (where Stella McCartney and a few other designers studied and graduated from) which is why we had quite a few staff members who were students from those colleges. that branch of topshop employs several hundreds of staff because it attracts thousands of customers through their doors every single day of the year, with the exception of christmas day. it attracts that many people because of its location and size it catered for lots of different styles from office wear, to evening wear, casual wear to sports wear, not only did they sell their own label clothing but they had clothes from smaller/lesser known labels which range everything from vintage clothing to cyber/club gear. there would be several deliveries of clothes and plenty of new lines delivered everyday because stock would sell out that fast and they won't make money if people can't find their size, people from all walks of life buy clothes there, celebrities that came in and wanted clothing would get the clothes free of charge and not just people who live in london because there's always so many tourists from different countries. each floor was divided into areas and each area would be allocated clothes according to it's department, on one floor you would find casual trousers, casual skirts, casual jackets, t-shirts, denim in one area, lingerie, nightwear would be on another and dresses, formal skirts, formal trousers, formal shirts, formal jackets and shoes in the other area. on another floor you would find all the concession labels selling all their clothes and on the other floor is where all the accessories are, belts, bags, hair accessories, mobile phones, sunglasses, jewelley, watches, etc. I can't remember every single department they had but i've listed most of them. they also pay up and coming new designers to design an exclusive range for them to sell and they've had Essesuals hairdressers (the sister branch of Toni & Guy), a nail bar and beauty therapy salon within the store. i didn't just work on the tills, i also worked in the fitting rooms, the exchange and refunds department, and on the shop floor and stock room, information desk and customer accounts. the last four years i was there, i worked exclusively on the shop floor because i preferred it, i hated standing behind a till because it was boring and repetitive. working on the shop floor meant that i could collect new lines that came in and merchandise them, meaning that i had to find a suitable place for them in the shop. some fashion store would employ merchandisers to do their merchandising and only that, but in topshop allowed the supervisors and/or trusted member of staff to do that. areas would have to remerchandise clothes everyday because some styles would sell faster than others and you had to go by what stock you had in the store, different clothes for different fixtures and fittings, the whole area would have each department flowing in the direction, so as you walk through the area, each department would look like it's gradually changing in style before it changes to a different department. all new lines and best sellers would have to be placed in a prominent part of the department it belonged to. although it wasn't in my job description, i had to talk to the distribution department, talk to the buyers, sent out to look in the other shops along the street and report back what they're selling and where they place what style of clothes and so on, footages, audits, training new staff, overseeing staff when my managers were too busy gossiping and be at certain meetings for managers. they make millions in profit every year and when fashion magazines do their fashion awards, topshop are usually the winners of the best high street award for style and value for money. their target market is for the teens to 35s and catered for not only the desperately fashionable people but also the people who are only comfortable wearing one style
i was there full-time 5-6 days a week for six years so i've seen plenty of different trends come and go and which trends stay and which ones always making a come back. so when i say i can appreciate different styles, i mean it. because i was frequently going to and fro to the stock room i knew what clothes were being sold in menswear too.
I don't have a fashion degree. and no matter how much you try to explain yourself, you're wrong. the thing is, I know all that stuff about top shop. I know about london, I've been there. you probably know very little about america. and that fact that the majority of americans can't afford to go overseas means that all the tourists you see are a very small sample of our population.
your second paragraph is very wrong. my friends vary greatly in their ethnicity, size, style and taste. the thing is, they're cool and if I say, "gross, I hate your shoes, [friend]", they'll say, "fuck you jerk". and I'll say, "dork" and they'll say, "I love you". one of my best friends is a pastor's wife who loves country music. she dresses horribly! but we're still friends.
that 30+ comment was flippant, you're taking it way to fucking seriously. you're taking all of this too seriously. it's not my fault you're deluded.
and based on this, any and all comments you have about fashion become null and void. (http://www.beastieboys.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=62662)
NO OFFENSE
that's because you're a dork ;)

maybe i should give in and try them, i dunno. they just look so...odd!
regardless, it's definitely new shoe time, these motherfuckers stink. i'm going back to the sambas until i find something better, i can't understand why they smell so bad! i've only had them for like a month, and i've been wearing clean, nice socks with them every day. washing my feet as per usual, only walking around with them, i don't know why they smell so awful. it usually takes waaaay longer for my shoes to start to smell. my sambas smell better, and i've had those for like 6 months at least
no i'm enjoying the shoe bitch-fight

alright ms. crafty, I suppose growing up watching loads of BBC doesn't make me an expert in LONDON and all its fucking fantastic ever-changing and evolving nature. my point was that YOU pretty much know nothing about where I live. I can spot a european in a crowd. it's like a game, I'll say to my friend, "look at that guy, I'll bet he's british", or "I'll bet she's german", and then sneak up close to the person and listen to hear them talk. and 95% of the time, I'm right. and they're not wearing tweed or lederhosen. there are just subtle differences in the cut of pants, the fabrics, the colors people choose to wear. it's all some form of western dress, but there are tiny differences indicative of where the people came from.
so whatever, you chose to turn this into a personal attack on me because I called your shoes gay. let's agree to disagree. I'm just saying, I'm the best. just deal with it. seriously, if I only had a passing knowledge of bob and his interests, I could choose a shoe for him. besides the photographic evidence of the clothing he chooses to wear, he likes monty python, the office, the simpsons. these shows all have a very classic and simple aesthetic and have been around and enjoyed for generations (okay, maybe not the office yet, but it will be).

All this because Bob can't dress himself.

I own two pair, oiled brown hi-cuts and all black lo-cuts.
I bought the all black ones in San Diego bc I had to go to a dress-code dance club with ba01 (I shit you not) and I didn't have a pair of shoes that weren't white-soled sneakers in my suitcase (Adidas Gazelles, Puma Baskets, Pro-keds hi-tops, Converse all-star).
I freaking love those things now, easily one of the best pair I own.
Keep the little Clarks leather taggy thingy on there and look 2x fresh.
I lost mine on the hi-cut brown ones. :(

Personally, Bob, I think this would've made a beautiful opportunity for you.
there's probably some girl you like, right? Tell her you're helpless when buying shoes and ask her to go with you.(y)
yeah but then she'd have to get near my feet
i just found out my sambas kinda smell now too, just from being old
everywhere i go i have to have stinky feet now :(
i should make some smelly friends to disguise myself.
anyway i did something dumb and ordered the beeswax wallabees over the internet, i don't like shoe stores
i can always return them by lying and saying that i've never worn them
i am very much looking forward to getting them though

I didn't put up any hippie shoes! please! re: docs: let's hold off on the whole 90's rehash for a couple more years please. although, I still have 3 pair in my closet, I'm not ready to wear them again until at least 2010.
plus, the kiwis already won the bob shoes contest.

Scrub your feet every night with peppermint stuff from Bath and Body works. Trust me it works.
Wear socks all the time, and change them each day.
Also, who the shoes aren't in use, buy cedar-pine-balls (at target or something) and keep them in your shoes.
Also, you need more shoes, it sounds liek you wear the same pair everyday.
You should own at least 5 pairs and rotate through them.
yeah, i just discovered that it's not the shoes after all, it's the socks! or at least, my feet's reaction to my socks. when i bought the shoes, i bought some new socks to go with them. I assumed that it was the new shoes that smelled, but i wore the new socks with some older shoes today (that don't stink, because i wore old socks with them too, and they were fine), and BAM, smellsville. i guess they're just very hot socks, they make my feet sweat. gross
i'll try skra's advice, it sounds good
the wallabees came today
that's a comfortable shoe, whoa
the soles are amazing. they're so soft, each step is like walking on a cloud. they're very quiet shoes too, i can barely hear my own footsteps.
they have very nice traction, as well, which is good for me right now, because it's icy as hell out there. the shoes came just in time.
might just get the boots eventually, too
