View Full Version : i can't stop watching 24
just can't stop. i got into it last season, and i'm watching it again this season, but since a week is a long time to wait for a new episode, i've been watching the old ones, i started with season one this week.
it's entertaining as hell, but az's absolutely right, this show essentially makes fun of itself. if you played a drinking game where you took a shot every time someone said "LET ME DO MY JOB" or "YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE TO TRUST ME", you'd be gone by the end of the night. it hasn't changed over 6 seasons, i can't believe the writers haven't noticed
and they overuse some of the effects so much. like how they use that split screen view, where you can see simultaneously what's going on in different locations, with different characters. sometimes, for absolutely no reason, there will be a split screen view of the same character from two different angles. and just now, i saw a scene where there was a split screen view of two characters WHO WERE IN THE SAME ROOM! there's no need for that!
but that's why i love it. it's the show that MST3k's itself

I am all caught up except I'll be watching episodes 5 + 6 online, then Monday there is going to be a 2 hour special with I guess 7 + 8 being shown.
I went to this site (http://creative.myspace.com/VOD/24/index.html)to get the plug in so I could watch episodes 5+ 6. (BTW it is totally cool Fox did this)
It's been a gas watching them. Once you get to the point of suspending belief over some of the plot twists and enjoy the show for the comic book narrative and action you begin to realize it is an excellent show.

my thoughts exactly (y)
i didn't know about that plugin, thanks. i've been torrenting episodes the day after (no cable)
it's best to ignore the political messages too, in my opinion. it seemed more subtle in past seasons (that i've seen so far), but in this current one it just seems so blatant. all like "we have to round up the muslims and put them in camps because of suicide bombers" and then all "no, that violates the constitution and we need muslim americans to be our friends through this", i dunno, i don't need an action series to preach to me like that. but once you stop listening, it becomes entertaining again
although i gotta say, it's kind of lame having knowledge of future episodes when watching old ones. for example, i know that kim can't die, because she's alive and well in season 5. i know palmer can't die, because he dies at the beginning of season 5. also, i saw some parts of the last episodes of season one back when it was airing, so i know who turns out to be a traitor, who DOES end up dying, who ends up being dennis hopper, etc etc...a lot of the tension is defused
still, i can't turn it off

Dude, the split-screen effect is what MAKES the show. There are many different plots unfolding simultaneously, and they all affect each other, so using the split-screen serves to increase tension (admit it, when they cut to all the different characters at the end of each episode showing either ominous facial expressions or scenes of action, it adds to the immediacy of the story, giving it that much more weight) is genius on their part.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split_screen_%28film%29
When there's a split-screen of two characters speaking to each other in the same room, they're scenes of confrontation (e.g. Jack & Nina Myers talking) usually. Read their expressions on their faces simultaneously, and it hits home stronger than if they were to just cut back-and-forth.
Split-screen is also used highly effectively in scenes where they're coordinating assaults on the bad-guys' places (i.e. one screen we'll see Jack coming up to the door with a gun, another will feature the villains inside the room not yet knowing that CTU will bust down the door, other screens are devoted to other CTU personnel).
I don't think the show's (deliberately) making fun of itself. Sure, the "JUST DO IT NOW!" or "Call me as soon as you find anything" or "I GIVE YOU MY WORD, WE CAN PROTECT YOU!" or "I'M THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!" are great fodder for drinking games, but there's only so many ways you can say lines like those.
As for politics on the show, commentators, pundits, etc. from both the right and the left love to vilify and/or support areas of the show that happen to fit whatever agendas they have. The truth of the matter is that the creators span the left-right spectrum. On the Season 5 DVD, there's a panel discussion on terrorism featuring many experts and 24 cast and crew. One of the creators is very conservative, the other guy is very liberal. Then, there's a third guy who is "fiercely moderate" and tries to keep them both in line. With this, the show doesn't really carry an agenda (other than terrorism = bad thing), and it's nice they all hold each other into account, too.
Don't get me started on 24, mang. :o

His accent was bad, but Dennis Hopper was awesome as Victor Drazen anyways! (y)
