View Full Version : Worst Beastie Performance?

The recent Melbourne thread gave me an idea for a thread. Many of us have been to a lot of shows and/or have heard and watched a lot of shows and performances on the web.

What are some of the worst performances you've seen or heard?

For me, it would have to be the impromptu show they did after 9/11. It was a spur of the moment benefit gig. They had not been playing live shows for a while, and probably had little to zero studio time.

They had a lot of starts and stops. Missing their cues, and forgetting lyrics. The audience got a little rough and they stopped mid-song to tell them to chill. Just a bumpy performance all around.

i never know what to say when "worst" and "beastie boys" are used in the same sentence. it makes me cringe a little. :(

The majority of people around here haven't been to more than 3 shows, and its not like they're telecast over pay-per-view.

Its not like someone in the midwest can say, "Oh their LA show was shit".

This is probably only a topic people who go to 90% of their shows, their agents and themselves can answer.

I would wager to say that most of the people that visit BG on a regular basis have seen several performances on youtube...if not in person. Then there's a group that trade and share audio and videos of the Beasties.

One poor individual song performance was at the Manchester '04 show on Time to Get Ill. MMM threw in a beat that totally didn't work. I think it was off on the timing and the Beasties plowed through it until the beat worked itself out.

then again the bboys cannot see the entire concert from the audience's point-of-view, they even mentioned that about AIFST right? that it was cool to see from the fan's perspective of them onstage :D something like that.

i wonder what they would say, however, about which performance they'd consider their "worst" ?

Brass Monkey at whatever festival in Jones Beach '04 was pretty horrid. MMM threw on the audio sample from that song that goes,

"ooooh, your body girl, makes the fellas go."

and left it on for WAAAAAAY too long. Actually, one second was way too long.

Eventually, Horovitz was like, "oh, mike, stop it."

I'm not commenting on the whole show, but that track stood out as particularly bad.

Wow.

I just listened to this to see what you were talking about. You were right on the money there, Lave.

That was the WORST song performance have ever heard by the Beastie Boys.

I remember a mtv live performance of intergalactic Hello Nasty era, it was the worst because they fucked it up really bad and it's my favourite cause it makes me really laugh, I used to play it over and over like a scene in a movie and laughed everytime.
What happened was that one of them skips the start and another one tries to put in back on the beat but eventually skips it even more, to the end of the song it gets hectic and it finishes on mike making a move to the ground probably injuring his knee.

I remember saying the Manchester performance sounded off (with MMM's beat timing), but someone said it was down to the radio. As the broadcast was apparently a bit behind the actual live situation Radio 1 apparently fuck around with the sound and balance etc and consequently messed up the mix of that song.

I know that sounds far-fetched, I thought so at the time. But then lots of people who went to the Manchester gig seemed to say that it seemed fine. Then again, it's always different when you're there.

Which is another thing, actually being at a gig and watching a performance is really something else as opposed to seeing clips. So I'd devide this thread into worse Beasties recorded perfromance and worse actual experiance. Still, nice idea. I always thought the recordings of that Loreley 98 gig seemed a bit off, ha, albeit mega entertaining by the sounds of it (something they'll always provide; entertainment).

Fair enough with the NY benefit gig, but I think the occasion and the fact they quickly organised something and got going was the most important aspect. In general though there's lots to love from what I've seen, and the fact their different across all the era's live too... Not being a complete suck-up but putting on ace and memorable live shows is almost a Beastie trademark.

That's a cool point though. I mean I love the fuck-ups. They usually have a good laugh about it.

I imagine they will before a full scale album supporting tour. These are all just random festival dates aren't they?

If we're talking about mistakes, Adrock really fucked up Gratitude at Sydney 99 or Roskilde 98 (can't remember which one, I have them both on my car MC). They were playing, jamming a bit in the beginning and when finally Adam was to start singing... Something went wrong, his guitar got unplugged or sth.

What I think was a lame performance - was one of the concerts available on the web, from the 1998-99 tour, at which they didn't play encore. Maybe my copy was bad but I think they actually didn't play Intergalactic and Sabotage...

putting shame in your game

I believe it was the 98 vienna show in July. MMM throwed another beat in and it just didnt work out at all! Especially since they didnt perform that song alot.

I think he fucked up alot of the hello nasty songs in 98. The songs were very fresh at the time so why throw in something?

I say this because MMM didnt really through in many beats on the 2004 tour with the TT5B songs. Which I think was a great idea!

Radio 1 played the album beat behind the live beat, on the feed. Listen again, you'll hear it.

That said, I'm cosigning cj. This lyric flubbing shit is old. I have a friend in Melbourne who emailed me today, saying they looked like a tribute act up there.

I remember that...from the VMAs. Mike D came in wayyyyyy to early with "I am known to do the Wop" and ended up saying 3 times to try and get it back on time.

When you've been a group for over 20 years, you're going to screw up lyrics to songs every once in a while.

Lots of negativity in this thread. I realize most of you are just pointing out little things that annoy you, but it isn't my thing I guess.

Listen to that Time to Get Ill performance again. It's the abum beat layered over the live cut (for whatever reason). I won't have you spewing or believing misinformation.

Nobody is pointing out stuff that hasn't actually happened. And I'd speculate about how negative/positive this forum can be when I've spent a bit more time on it, thanks. You don't know how gushy it gets.

I'm not trying to be a dick, and I know this forum can get really gushy from what I've seen. But I was just pointing out some of the negativity.

It isn't really a big deal to me and I probably shouldn't have posted about it. But people forget lyrics after being a group for 20 years straight.

Oh and thanks for calling me a noob.

Yeah...I thought MMM had the regular beat spinning, then was trying to scratch in or work in another Time to Get Ill beat on top of it. I never thought it could have been the radio feed fuck up.

Another one just came to mind is...I think, the Switzerland '04 performance of Pass the Mic. Horovitz blanked on his, "yes yes y'all, yes yes y'all..."

Another one is the 04 pre-pageant Weenie Roast in California. Near the end of the show, Horovitz didn't realize he was supposed to leave the stage before the encore. So Mike and Yauch leave and Horovitz is just standing there. He decides to sit down and talk to crowd about how much Bush sucks and stuff. Then the other two come back out and finish up with the encore.

And to JobDDT, this was meant to be a fun look at their f'ups, flubs, and missed cues. Kinda like watching the bloopers show. (y)

oh KROQ's annual Weenie roast i saw this one on youtube & it made me laugh cuz adam was first talking about gay marriage to some fan then when he mentioned george bush he didn't get much of an answer & seemed a little embarrassed then relieved when mike & yauch reappeared:p

i saw a video of a concert in sacramento or oakland around 04' & they had to stop in the middle of a song to tell the crowd to not be so rowdy & that kinda killed the mood for the rest of the song (alright hear this)

The only time there could be a worst performance in my opinion is if they're obviously not having fun and look like they don't even want to be there. I think they're fuck ups make it more interesting, and I like how they just laugh at it and keep going. If they're fuckin up so much that they have to keep stopping songs then I can see where people get pissed for spending money. But if they just don't say a line completely right, then that's a little harsh you know. And that video of Yauch with the dildo hot dog egg roll thingie is really fuckin hilarious. :D

Sydney Big Day Out was my least favorite show because I was scared off by tales of the pit from the year before and so I hung back a bit more than usual and wound up surrounded by the suckiest of audiences. Two nights later, I saw them at a small venue and it was marvelous.

When I watch the BDO videos on youtube, it's obvious that the band was in good form and the audience even looks more fun than I remember.
