View Full Version : What would cause you 'Fan Anger'?

I'm guessing they might not actually be worried about 'fan anger', but are instead just fucking with us. I don't think much would make me angry, unless it was just dorky-sounding music, and not cool shit.
If they were thinking about doing a non-hiphop album, they may just be worried the fans tastes aren't as diverse as theirs. Yeah, there's a lot of hip-hop fans on this forum, but they have a very non-rap following in general. At least nowadays.

Do you only listen to rap? And no, there's no condescension there, I'm just wondering.

Ok. Truthfully, I'd be a little disappointed if there was no hip-hop on the next album. Although, hip-hop permeates everything they produce.

I'd also be very disappointed in "no hip hop," but I don't think I'd be "angry."
I'd be angry at another cancelled tour or if the album didn't make it out, I guess. But, it woldn't be a high degree of anger.

There will probably at least be some hip-hop flavored tracks, but maybe no rhyming...they only thing that would upset me is if the album dosen't make it out for summer

Yeah it's been said by Michael Willis Drummond Crawford that they're trying to get it out by the time we have our winter (Northern summer).

I'd only really be angry if they dissed everything that I loved and cared for in hilarious rhymes with awesome beats

Along those lines, yes. Don't give them new ideas for their album. I guess I would be angry if it turned out there was only one song on the album and it was a remix.

Both of those lines are to the 'Car Thief' beat, with each Beastie Boy jumping in on certain groups of words, versus delivering the vitriol individually. Just so Pres and I know the whole band hates us. Fredo would probably bang the Djembe in disgust, and Mark would diss us in the key of A.

I generally don't listen to hip-hop but I would be disappointed if there were no hip hop tracks because these are my favourite of Beastie Boys.

As would I. But MM's comment "Check Your Head Part 2" bodes well. There could have been more rhyming on CYH, but at least we got some.

There's not too much in regards to music that would "anger" me. Hell...I even can get into Country Mike.
In the past, my biggest frustrations came with how they announced dates on the Pageant. It's pretty much the way they've been announcing these festival dates. Out of chronological order and onesie twosie. Although they are giving plenty of notice.
I would prefer if they just announced all the dates at one time, with a few months advanced notice. I have always tried to attend multiple shows and need info as much notice as possible in order for that to work for me.
The only other thing is I wish they'd utilize this website to better communicate info with us. We (the members of this board) always seem to find out info before it's officially announced.
I've come to accept it for what it is. :)

Are you suggesting that a non-hip hop album would be their "lesson" to us hick music fans?
Yee-haw! Them Beastie Boys are gonna learn us some music!
*picks teeth with straw*
Nah, I'm just saying that if Mike D's "Ready for fan anger" interview is anything to go by, it's possible they are worried the fan base to be less eclectic in their tastes than they are. So, they think the reaction could be negative.
But like I said, they're probably fucking with us.

i feel where you're comin from laver; but on the same token, I'm willing to bet that we, as fans, are treated better than the majority of fans of other acts when it comes to what the bboys make available to us, i.e. the o-cam, instrumentals for remix, grand royal magazine, the TT5B teasers, etc.

Man, the news and reports in this community is so DIY, it couldn't belong to anybody but the Beastie Boys.
What I'm saying is that we all do our bit in relaying and updating.

I must say that I see improvement in communicating the news recently. I'm very thankful that the festivals are announced now and not in May (even if they announce one at a time).

Yep...I agree. (y)
And I do love the DIY vibe. Sometimes.

i'm hypothesizing that this new record has very little hiphop.....yauch wanted to make CYH nonhiphop.......but thankfully it didnt' happen......
hiphop is what got them to where they are.......to abandon it would be foolish.....

Even though they tend to build a rap song like a hardcore song, whenever they try something new, it's because of doors that hip-hop opened for them, not hardcore.

Nothing would really cause me anger. As long as they're having fun and making money, they've given me enough material throughout the years that I couldn't possibly be angry.

Probably the closest thing they could do to make me "angry" would be to suddenly close the message board with no warning. And, even still -- their house, their rules, you know?

Nah. It might be fun to find the most absurd tangential ways to work BF conversation into the BG threads.
"Favorite Beastie song has got to be 'Get on the Mic' because it was on the other day when I was ordering pizza, and my friend insisted on ranch dressing and apricot sauce which I JUST CAN'T UNDERSTAND it's so bizarre. What are YOUR favorite toppings to order while listening to Beastie Boys songs?"

thats what i'm sayin....i asked yauch in that q&a that if they weren't so successful with LTI, would they have stuck with hiphop or do some other form of music.....needless to say i got a goofy answer......
i find it difficult for them to continuely produce hiphop when they're so far removed from the culture......

They could make hip-hop, nonstop. But it's hard to fit their style in this modern world. People want to buy stuff that people want to sell. It's a money roundabout. The Beasties are a live performance draw. I don't think they'd ever be able to do a hip-hop album that was a worldwide smash again. But they can keep playing it, and that's circuitous too. If they can keep playing it and entertaining folks worldwide, then feasibly they can keep making it to play to people, without worrying about the albums success.
I don't really think they're that removed from the culture. They're obviously massive fans of the art. In paying homage they sort of run parallel to hip-hop and keep a distance until it suits them.

They have an elderstatesmen status about them now. Whatever they produce will have decent success because of who they are and how long they've been around.
I'm just happy they're doing stuff.

Hmmm....if there was no hip-hop on the new album then I could only assume I probably wouldn't dig the album as much as the others, the reasoning being that hip-hop is my favourite type of music and that whilst i like most of the non-hip-hop stuff the beasties do (apart from the punk/hardcore) its housing in a hip-hop setting probably makes it more palatable.
i dont know how much id like an entire album without hip-hop. but, i defended to the hilt dj shadow's decision to make the album he wanted to make, despite what it may mean for his fans, so id have to do the same here.
so i wouldnt be angry...probably just dissapointed. then again, it is the beastie boys, so they could well surprise us yet.
