is a pretty sweet movie. pretty it's in subtitles tho. it's a little hard to follow the board and watch a foreign movie at the same time. the japanese really like their gore (y)

Nice idea, poorly directed.
If it were Western it would be laughed out of the living room for it's dodgy b-movie-ness, but because it's Japanese everyone loves it :/
(note, that's Western and not "a Western", because if it were "a Western" all the kids would be wearing cowboy hats and that would be verr funny).

well the book was written in 1999 so there would never ever be a time that it'd be made in the west. School students killing each other, too many people would think it's too insensitive

I think you missed my point. I'm saying that a lot of the acting and direction is really quite poor, but that because it's a Japanese film people are prepared to gloss over these weak points because being Japanese it is ultimately novel, and therefore 'cult-film status worthy' to the vast majority of Western moviegoers. Had it been made in this part of the world it would've been dismissed as a rather average affair and probably not long remembered.
fyi - An American remake of Battle Royale is in the works, so obviously the Western market is prepared for it.

yah, i know. sort of like how people would think Night Watch would be considered totally shithouse if it was made in america. didn't know about the remake. although i'm sure there'll be some right wing fanatic christian hicks having a cry about it

any americanized version of anything foreign always spells disaster. Craig Bierko turned down the role of Chandler in friends to be Lister in the american version of Red Dwarf. and who the fuck knows who Craig Bierko is now? i dont even know if i'm spelling his name right!

Damn it! We never remake anything. The Japanese, however, do. They took the Magnificent Seven, and turned it into a Samurai movie.
and it's an absolute classic

There was a movie about school students of the future where everyday was a battle to survive. It was shit, but funny. I always thought - "why not just not turn up to school?" I guess this can't apply to battle royale. I hated that movie.
I would have eventually slaughtered all my classmates, not that I would have wanted to - but this movie shows that there is always someone willing to take the plunge and make thie first kill, so I would have had to.
What about you guys?

Battle Royale is one of my favourite movies ever.
same. hopefully a friend of mine is going to bring around Ichi The Killer tomorow. that movie, without a doubt, has the tuffest character ever (y)

Also, sorry to divert the thread from Battle Royale for a minute. But talking about American remake, has anyone seen Oldboy before?
It's one of my favourite movies also, and Hollywood were going to remake it at one point. Last I heard it was shelved though, which I am really thankful about.
Anyway, has anyone seen it?
yeah, it's pretty damn good. another movie i have to see again in the near future

The ending... was the first movie I have seen in a long time where I was just like:
...wow. That's fucked up.
It's also a movie you can't watch with friends because they always ask questions about wtf is going on and you can't answer.
fine joel!~

i'd try to go down all guns blazing [depending on weapon]
oldboy is def good though - watch the whole revenge trilogy [the other two aren't as violent as oldboy but still decent]

I saw the movie both 1 and for the 1st time months ago...I feel I have to say this I don't condone violence but that movie was entertaining..in a sick way...I'm pretty much still a kid at heart sometimes...

incorrect. loads of cult films have bad acting and direction, often thats the very reason for their cult status.
Battle Royale is cult because the premise involves the Japanese govt forcing teenagers to hunt down and kill each other. its awesomeness is obvious.
