Anyone familiar with his stuff?....I'll admit this is another jazz name I found out about from Flea of the RHCPeppers....his name droping really turned me on to Miles Davis and Chet Baker as well.....in the same way the BBoys made me aware of Jimmy Smith or The Stone Alliance....anyway at the Grammy's Flea played in front of a banner saying "Love to Ornette Coleman" who was nominated......anyone have any Ornette Coleman suggestions? The library's catalogue goes back to "The Shape of Jazz to Come" up to "To Whom Keeps a Record".....sure shot suggestion?

Ornette. (y)

The Shape of Jazz to Come is good. Free Jazz is okay if you can take it; Coltrane's Ascension is better for that stuff, though.

Check the Live in Stockholm volumes. Also, he plays on the soundtrack for Naked Lunch and that's quite something.

I like his stuff quite a bit, but if you're not already a fan I wouldn't dive full in at once. Check Vols. 1 and 2 of Live in Stockholm and see if you like it. That's a fairly representative taste.

Nice....I'll give a listen to both.....no Stockholm in stock though.....gracias, cabrón........

p.s: thinking you will disagree but I find "Naked Lunch" may be the most over referred/rated American novel next to "Catcher in the Rye".....I suppose they were inflamatory or censor worthy at one time.....much ado about nothing, retrospectively speaking.....both authors so much more personally interesting than those works.....;)

Fuck that book, man. I think Burroughs is way overrated. But Catcher is a masterpiece. If you're coming at it from a "Banned Books" angle, no, it's not titillating at all.

Cronenberg's film version of Naked Lunch is terrific. Great performances from Peter Weller, Judy Davis, Julian Sands, Ian Holm... and many jizzum-dripping puppets. :D

Oh yeah,Cronneberg may be the king of slimy cinematography, way back to Videodrome, the Fly,eXistenZ…..even in “A History of Violence” there’s an exposed brain by bullet bit that rivals Lynch……great Canadian director…..have you seen this?

Never seen it. User rating's not too good. Is it interesting?

I'm not too crazy about the beat writers, for the most part, though Ginsberg's gotten off some good stuff.

So to speak.

No I haven’t seen it either....was looking for a push.....I think it's in the cult section at the local.....I'll have to snag it....I'm mad about the beats, easily the most interesting literary movement in American history....especially when considered with the art and music of the times, all woven together, mixed mediums.....a really great reader: http://www.amazon.com/Beat-Book-Anne-Waldman/dp/1570620008
