View Full Version : The general concept of "borrowing" something.

My friend and I just had a rather silly, but heated argument/debate on the concept of "borrowing" food.

I say, by the definition of the word, you cannot borrow food.

It all stemmed from him saying that he borrowed butter from the fridge, and I said, jokingly "no, you took some butter". and the conversation continued along the lines of:

-No, I borrowed it because I gave it back

-No, you took it because you didn't give back the part you used.

And it contiued with me comparing using 5 of his CDRs in a spindle of 50 vs taking 1 tablespoon out of an 8 tablespoon stick of butter. And how they are taking, not borrowing.

I am in the right here with the concept that, by definition, food cannot be borrowed?

People just misuse the word. I think they mean "Would you lend me a stick of butter for which I will reimburse you an equal stick of butter within a reasonable amount of time?"

This is also why we say "May I bum a cigarette?" instead of "May I borrow a cigarette?"

That's what my original argument was, that he misuses the word all the time. And since neither of us can ever be wrong, it snowballed from there.

Tell him it's colloquial at best and let it go.

Hold on, so you mean you call it the concrete pond instead of the cement pond?

what pond?

cement is nothing! to make concrete you mix: cement, gravel/sand, and water. the cement is basically the glue

Okay, but I still don't see why it matters when you know what I mean!!!

I used to work with transportation engineers. They corrected me on that all the time.

Wimpy would routinely borrow a hamburger, for which he would gladly repay you on Tuesdays.

i guess its just one of those little things that bothers me since i've worked closely enough with it that i have to have it the right way or i just can't have it at all.

i'm sure i say lots of things incorrectly that bug other people, so i can't get too mad about it.

Dude...Your having an argument about "butter". Just have him give you your thing back that you lent him and all is forgiven.

Your so right. He probably calls it a "pool" or something.

Thanks for calling me Mute, that's what my friends call me.
