For the non-US citizens who read this board, I want you to know that US children do learn about the British Empire in school. We're also exposed to it via movies and war documentaries. :o

As an aside: Any time I look at a map of the British Empire from any era, I think of this scene from Hope and Glory where the teacher explains that England is in charge of all the "pink bits" on the world map. I don't know why, but maps of colonial empires always show the empire in pink, don't they?

English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil are the official languages of Singapore. You'd be hard-pressed to find someone in Singapore who does not speak English. English and Mandarin are the two most commonly spoken languages.
