The Washington Post reported Saturday that staffers responsible for managing outpatients at Walter Reed have had caseloads of more than 125 patients each. Recovering soldiers face bureaucratic delays, overworked case managers and appalling living conditions, including black mold, cheap mattresses and cockroaches. Since that report, IAVA has been leading the charge to keep this critical story in the headlines and demand action from our elected officials. On Sunday, the Los Angeles Times quoted IAVA Executive Director Paul Rieckhoff in response to the situation at Walter Reed. On Monday, Rieckhoff appeared on MSNBC's "Hardball" to comment on the developing story. Today Rieckhoff and his fellow Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans vowed to continue their fight for adequate care for this newest generation of American veterans. "This news is an absolute outrage and it's shameful. It is inexcusable that our wounded troops are coming home to such an unprepared and overwhelmed health care system," said Paul Rieckhoff, an Iraq War Veteran and the founder of IAVA: Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America. "Responsibility for this tragedy goes straight to the top. We demand swift action from the President, DoD and Congress to correct these problems. It is disgraceful that our country has sent troops to war without ensuring adequate care for the wounded." "Last week IAVA member veterans met with dozens of members of Congress who pledged to do all they can to care for this newest generation of veterans," Rieckhoff said. "I hope I can count on them in the coming days to remedy the problems at Walter Reed. They must ensure that not another man or woman in uniform comes home to such an unacceptable standard of care." IAVA: Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, is the nation's first and largest organization for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, representing more than 60,000 members in all 50 states. To arrange an interview with Paul Rieckhoff or any other IAVA member veterans, contact IAVA at (212) 982-9699, or email michael@iava.org

That's been happening for years, it's not unique to the Iraq war. My grandfather has been getting shitty VA treatment for years now. Giving him the runaround, fucking everything up, bureaucratic bullshit, and second-rate care, too. It said in his chart he was BLIND in one eye, so the next time he went in they had him cover up his good eye to read a chart. He said "I'm blind in that eye, doesn't it say so in my chart?" and they replied "Yes, sir, I see that. Just checking. I'm going to have you back up 5 feet now and I'm going to re-check your sight in that eye." "NOPE, STILL BLIND." Heads up their asses, man.

They mess up his appointments, tell him it's in the wrong wing of the hospital, and often refuse to pay for stuff. They'll only pay up to a certain amount for care and have bullshit red tape that prevents him from getting what he needs. He had to pay himself for a pair of glasses that will allow him to see, because they won't pay for anything stronger than a certain prescription. He's 85! He needs strong glasses. I hear about how the VA is full of bumbling fuck-ups every holiday dinner.

.....Have you contacted the numbers that were on my post to add a positive voice and offer your help????

If by contact you actually mean what you first typed:

To arrange an interview with Paul Rieckhoff or any other IAVA member veterans, contact IAVA at (212) 982-9699, or email michael@iava.org

Then no, I have not called to set up any interviews. I'll do that first thing in the morning, though!

Just in case you're so interested in knowing, my job helps more veterans than any 5-minute phone call ever could. Feel better now?

So this is what you do when people agree with you? I hate to see what happens when you disagree with someone.

You're a spammer, so don't go thinking we're all hurt by your "punishing" words.

Something other than mindless blogging...says the guy who has his own site devoted to it. Like I said, I do more for helping troops and veterans with my job that I work at 40 hours per week than you ever have by calling or emailing someone. But I'm sure you skimmed over that part of my post and just like to continue to think that you're making a huge difference and none of us even try, O Great One.

Dish out negativity? Gimme a break, that was uncalled for. Nowhere in my first post did I attack you, but you felt it relevant to attack me. I don't dish out any sort of attacks on people, unless it is warranted. I have the guts to take something if I'm in an argument with someone. With you, it went something like this:

"Hey, the VA sucks."
"Yeah, it really does. Here's my experience."
"HEY FUCK YOU, GO OUT AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT AND STOP WHINING!"

I mean, Jesus Christ. If you and your pubes are as old as you say, your 40-year-old self should know better than to go around being an asshole to someone just making casual conversation. (n)

This site is very relevant as we have some of the more intelligent posters (including queenie)posting here(and I post at many sites so I am aware of this).

From personal knowledge I am also aware that many posters here actively take part in making this country better.

Maybe you should take some time and peruse the various topics that have been raised here and how the individuals here have responded to them.

You come off as quite knee-jerk without warrant, as no one here even provoked such a response.

And Halliburton rears its ugly little head again:

http://www.armytimes.com/news/2007/03/Weightmansubpoena/

The memorandum “describes how the Army’s decision to privatize support services at Walter Reed Army Medical Center was causing an exodus of ‘highly skilled and experienced personnel,’” the committee’s letter states. “According to multiple sources, the decision to privatize support services at Walter Reed led to a precipitous drop in support personnel at Walter Reed.”

The letter said Walter Reed also awarded a five-year, $120-million contract to IAP Worldwide Services, which is run by Al Neffgen, a former senior Halliburton official.

They also found that more than 300 federal employees providing facilities management services at Walter Reed had drooped to fewer than 60 by Feb. 3, 2007, the day before IAP took over facilities management. IAP replaced the remaining 60 employees with only 50 private workers.my emphasis

I have yet to see it mentioned on any of the Big Media News outlets (though I don't watch all of them obviously).

I first heard this, and found the above link five minutes after hearing it, on the local Pacifica radio station this past Monday - thank you independent news sources!!

You don't watch media for news. You read it in Newspapers.

The kind of media you watch is if you care about Anny Nicole or Anny Coulter.

So true....if you watch FOX the story of Anna Nicole was played 121 times, 12 times the attention of Walter Reed Hospital. (http://thinkprogress.org/2007/03/05/fox-news-anna-nicole-walter-reed/)

But hey, after all one story was what America wanted to know about, right?
