In this thread, I will name a movie, and I would like the boys to tell me whether they think it's a chick flick.

First up:

Almost Famous

Go!

It's not really chick flick story material, but the way it's filmed is sure chick-flick...y.

Hmmm... I say NOT A CHICK FLICK.

i'm a chick who doesn't like chick flicks, neither do i like to watch movies where everyone blows each other up or something. i like comedies where lots of crazy shit happens and it's funny! although i'll also occasionally fall in love with a well-acted, well-written movie where everything is serious and blah blah blah. while really the ones that make absolutely no sense are the ones most appealing to me. horror movies are awesome too. i want some popcorn now.

I really don't remember a whole lot about Almost Famous except Kate Hudson. God, she is hot. :)

I have to own up to liking two chick flicks. I wound up seeing Hitch last summer and I though it was pretty fucking good.

And I liked City of Angles with Nick Cage and Meg Ryan. That movie had 'Iris' stuck in my head for months.

I liked Almost Famous. I wish they'd done it about an actual band though - Cameron had the material.

NOT A CHICK FLICK.

Oh, I never said it was a great movie. I just said that for some Godforsaken reason, I liked it. Still don't know why.

I like Prince's Under the Cherry Moon, too, and that movie is a cinematic abomination.

I guess I'm nothing but a glutton for punishment.

Live Nude Girls is a good chick flick. It's funny to go online and read reviews of it by men who clearly picked it up off the rental shelves based on the title alone. It's not really a movie for you, guys. Sorry.

The backbone of the plot centers around a football player and football. That gives it the edge it needs to survive being called a chick flick.

DipDipDive
02-25-2007, 11:50 AM
Yeah, but the sports-related content is a subplot to the romantic storyline. And what a vaginal storyline it is.

hardnox71
02-25-2007, 11:52 AM
The sub-plot is the whole football thing, which underlies the whole romantic 'you complete me' garbage.

I dunno, Touc. I think I gotta go with chick flick on Maguire.

ToucanSpam
02-25-2007, 12:03 PM
I can see why it could be considered a chick flick, but there's too much aside from the romance going on to make this a complete vagina storm. Really, his job and the relationship between him and his client takes up more space than the romance...

...I'm trying to convince myself here.

I don't get why people think this is a chick flick. Christ, every movie has some kind of love story in it, so do they all become chick flicks by default? Like I said before, the rest of Jerry Maguire has nothing to do with the relationship between him and his woman. None. Football, Sports, and his job as an agent. If that qualifies as being characteristics of a chick flick, I defy you to find me a movie that we couldn't call a chick flick in some way.

Almost Famous = I'd say not a chick flick. I suppose there's aspects of the movie that can appeal to chicks, but I don't think it's all-out for guys either. I'd give it a new category: unisex flick.

Virgin Suicides = Never saw it, but I'm suspecting it might be?

Jerry Maguire = I'm thinking this is a chick flick disguised as a guys' movie. The football and "show me the money" type stuff are there so guys don't have to feel awkward enjoying the movie.

That's not quite true, Touc. Everything about that movie is supportive of the romantic plot. It's all reflective of the whole 'step out on a limb, go for broke and make it work' dynamic.

It totally is. Its the opposite of what Toucan's sayin. He's sayin its a dude movie with a lil love for the ladies. Its a chick flick with a smidge of dude shit to try to broaden its scope and reach a larger audience cuz dudes have a harder time sittin thru a chick flick than girls have sitting thru say.............The 40 Year Old Virgin.

women are a multi-faceted creature, of course, so while shows like sex and the city plainly can not appeal to every woman, they are important for a certain type of woman. most people agree that sex and the city was a television milestone when it came to a variety of successful woman and their sexualities, albeit ones who have crippling shoe obsessions and high-end PR and journalist jobs. so, of course, it is important. i'm not a fan of sex and the city, but i dislike it when people point the finger at it as some thing that only women who "sit around and ovulate and squeal like a farm full of chickens" watch. you are immediately reducing a whole population of women down to emotional shallow creatures. but, hey, it's a light, airy programme. perhaps it deserves 'shallow' viewing?

this is oft-quoted, but the creator of the l-word said from the start that she wasn't going to be the "mantle of social responsibility" when it came to representing lesbians on television. i think the same should hold for other "chick" shows like sex and the city. but it is hard, because i think the representation of all women - gay, straight, disabled, black, white, whatever - is all political in some sort of way and loaded with a variety of problems.

but, meh, it's 'just' television. if you don't feel part of the 'audience' on one show, you can watch another. on 5 billion channels.

not really, I am poking fun at the show and being more tounge-in-cheek than anything just like I would a viewing audience of any show I find stupid. If you feel like that lumps an entire sex into the same category as a group that is shallow, tepid, and overemotional, then apparently I didnt word my post right.

Jerry Maguire = chick flick.
Almost Famous = not a chick flick
Virgin Suicides = not a chick flick -- it's odd for the sake of being odd and I can't imagine who the intended audience was.

Sex and the City was a well-written TV show and I miss it. It wasn't about the plot, it was about the relationships between the women. It was pure fantasy and completely removed from the lives of real women, but it captured how long-time female friends relate to each other better than any other show I can think of right now.

If you're a woman who doesn't have a friend who will meet you in a coffee shop in the middle of the night when you're feeling blue, then I am sorry for you, and you will probably never like Sex and the City.

I'm sticking to my guns about Jerry Maguire. I think it's just a romantic dramady (terrible word) that's not a pure chick flick. Compare it to a movie like Legally Blone, Clueless, The Traveling Pants movie, or that shit burger starring Zach Braff that had the OC chick topless in it, and you'll understand why Jerry Maguire does not belong in this category.

There's different versions of chick flicks. I wouldn't categorize The Notebook along with Legally Blonde or Traveling Pants either, because The Notebook was artfully done and had a more in-depth plot. But it's still a chick flick. Legally Blonde et al were created for 15 year old retarded boy-crazy squealing girls. The Notebook and Jerry Maguire were created for those girls, PLUS the 40 year-old housewives. They're just more versatile chick flicks.

So, are there degrees in which a movie is a chick flick? For example, Legally Blonde is as you call it a movie 'created for 15 year old retarded boy-crazy squealing girls', while Jerry Maguire was made to cover a larger demographic of women. Just kidding. It does err towards "chick flick" territory, but since it's a John Hughes '80s teen movie classic, there's plenty for both genders to enjoy. I mean, you got The Geek and Long Duck Dong. (y)

You could argue that those are just guy comedy elements thrown in so the fellas don't have to feel bad (just like with the "Jerry Maguire" situation), but the chick-like elements are far more restrained, methinks.

Sure, I take "chick flicks" as movies geared towards women. They can gear them towards different groups of women and they can decide to make it a stupid premise movie or an artistic drama, just as long as it's made for the ladies. To make it a chick flick, they usually just throw in some kind of dating or feel-good romance crap to appeal to womens because most men don't give one shit about that stuff. So since Jerry Maguire has the romance BS, it's therefore a chick movie.
