....so I just plowed through season two of HOUSE. Haven't seen season one.

I kinda like it. I'm hoping there's more character development in season three, because right now, it's just medical mystery neatly tied up episode after episode. For the most part.

Hugh Laurie is awfully good at this.

MILD SPOILER AHEAD

The last episode with the guy with the swollen tongue/popping eyeball/peeled face was pretty darned gross.

Oooooh.... you should check it out. See what you think. It's really good.

It's this medical mystery show. basically, some patient winds up at the hospital with whatever bizarre symptoms which make a diagnosis difficult. Laurie plays Gregory House, this brilliant but really socially fucked up cynic who just smacks down on everybody most of the time -- his way of having fun. The idea is that this is a doctor who will say to patients' faces what evil doctors might well be saying in private. Sometimes wicked, often funny.

Nope -- it sounds right.

American accents vary wildly, probably even more than UK accents. I started watching before I knew he was English, so it was a nice surprise to fuind out he wasn't even American.

this is currently my favorite tv show.

hugh laurie is kinda hot. um yeah.

but I do think it's funny how all the patients have a medical breakdown on cue. it's like: sick child, parents arguing over his hospital bed, CUE: child goes in to chardiac arrest, doctors rush in...etc.

It's funny cuz I find when English people do American accents, as with Laurie's, there's always a sort of whiny over-softened consonants quality to it and I can recognise that they're not actually American. Curious that Americans themselves don't hear it.

Nah. In fact, he sometimes enunciates a little too well -- a little theatrical; that's the only tell.

abcdefz

it's definitely variations on a formula. Not that different from Miss Marple or whatever. I'd watched one disc and kind of thought that was fine, but I was disappointed there wasn't more character development. But there was nothing else very interesting to rent (fucking Blockbuster  ) so I grabbed the next disc, then the next, then the next... it grew on me.

It's not the greatest thing since sliced tea, but it's good.

American accents are reasonably easy to do.

Australian accents must be the hardest to fake, because i havent heard a fake aussie accent that didnt sound awful and way off the mark.

e.g. the cops on the beach at the end of point break.

'weelll gitt heeemm weeenn he comes back eeeennnn!!!!'

pitiful.

I have loved Hugh Laurie forever, but I don't like House. If you see three episodes, you don't ever need to see another one.

He was excellent in the cameo on MI-5 though. That was a nice surprise.

ahahaha. i don't know. i think the australian accents are the easiest of the colonial accents to do  don't get me started on the south african one! all i can do is say "black" as "blick". that's the extent of my learning there.

i think with australian accents, um, i've noticed a difference in the shape of your mouth when you say things like "hair" and "there". wow, this is really hard to explain in written words. if you could hear me blaspheme an entire nation's accent that would make more sense, but you never will. muahahaha.

when i get home i will ask my flatmate, she's an actress. they have things called hook sentences which they use to get them 'into' the required accent. i wonder what her australian one is? for reference, her liverpudlian one is "i can't go jogging today dad, i'm on my period!" brits, say that to yourself in a liverpool accent and you will realise its appropriateness! :)

I once called a kebab house at like 1am when I was really drunk with all my friends and placed the entire order with an Australian accent, slipping in words like "bonzer" and "no worries". They didn't clock it at all.

I have fooled plenty of people into thinking I'm English.
From Yorkshire to Essex, I can do the lot. I rule.

Hugh Laurie on the other hand is a big fat traitor for doing an american accent and being in a shite series and having 14 year old girls get the horn for him.
He used to be so great. Oh how I long for the days when the only times he did an american accent was when to take the piss out of americans (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4tDP-yMwXI).

See, thats where u went wrong.

No australian in the history of time has ever said 'bonzer'.

I stand by my statement that no one can do a fake australian accent.

esp. on the simpsons.

and meryl streep?? puhlease. shocking.

South australians (like me and tracky) have a more proper accent than the eastern states, and whenever i travel to sydney or melb everyone asks me what part of england i am from, because we sound very english. weird.

Season three just came out on DVD in the States. So far (about eight to ten episodes in?) this is my favorite season. Some real consequences are piling up, and the David Morse (y) character is allowing even more through-line to the series. Before, it was fine, but a little too much like Agatha Christie -- mystery, mystery solved, episode tied up, move on.

This is really nice.
