View Full Version : Does getting complimented too much make you uncomfortable?

It does for me. Just like, I say stupid things to get laughs in the office. And then one lady always says "Oh, Diana! You're a breath of fresh air! Every office should have someone like you." And it's kinda like she's laying it on kinda thick and I don't know how to respond. I mean, how DO you respond to over-praise? I mean, sure, I thought it was funny but it wasn't hilarious dammit.
I like some compliments. But some stuff goes too far and makes me feel weird and awkward. There's another friend of mine who does it a lot, too. Asks me "How do you come up with this stuff, lol?" And it's like, um. What?
I dunno, maybe it's just me. I just kinda laugh and quickly change the subject. :-/

Yeah, it does. I usually just quickly refute the compliment, and play it off.

I don't like getting complimented because I feel like I have to compliment people back. and I'm very self-centered, I have a lot of trouble coming up with things I like about other people.
I get made fun of plenty enough to balance the compliments usually.
Yes it does make me uncomfortable.

I like some compliments. But some stuff goes too far and makes me feel weird and awkward. There's another friend of mine who does it a lot, too. Asks me "How do you come up with this stuff, lol?"
my friend was telling me about this conversation she overheard with these two girls and one of them said "LOL" she actually said L-O-L. in real-life conversation. and there was this other girl who was like "W-T-F?"
lol wtf is wrong with people? :p
i guess i don't really mind being complimented, it makes me feel good. unless it's a weird compliment like this boy who was like "i like your shirt. it's very sparkly." (and i was just walking past him) and i'm just like "er...thanks." or give an awkward smile or say nothing and move on.
or like when these two (or maybe it was three) girls who came up to me at lunch one day at school and gave me a valentine card covered with hearts and a pony-shaped cutout tied to a piece of string and they were like "we were looking all over for you!" and i'm like "yeah?" because i don't even know who these people are and they make me read the card which they signed and everything and this one girl hugged me twice and was like "happy valentine's day!" i wasn't feeling well that day so i thought i had hallucinated the entire thing, but my friend who was sitting next to me told me afterwards she saw them too. so i guess it was real.
we saw them a few days later walking around the commons with another card, choosing their next victim i guess. i mean, it's a nice gesture, a weird one though. they did spend all that time making the cards...but still. i gave the card and gift to somebody else b/c i thought at the time the point was to keep passing it on to random people or something and so they passed it on to somebody else, a teacher i think. i just felt like telling that story, nothing interesting/peculiar like that happens to me every day.
compliments like "you rock! high five!" from people i don't really know make me uncomfortable though.
i keep to myself most of the time, so not very used to getting compliments.
i'm not used to making a post this long either.
it's also midnight.

I do that too. But the difference is, online I never use "lol" to actually mean "LAUGHING OUT LOUD" I use it in the "Look at me, I'm a fucking idiot" way, thus going "LOLOLOLOL!1!!1!!ONE" when I'm talking to people. So in real life I'll say LOLS to stuff, just to be stupid. However, I do know people who say that stuff in real life, not in a comical way, but in a "I'm serious, I like using this" way. One girl I know was in a fight with another girl, and she said "Oh, and B.T.Dubs, you're not all that either." And stormed off. The other girl sat for a minute, and then cracked up and said "Did that bitch seriously say BTDubs?"
ROFLZ.

Nah man, I don't worry about it, it's just kind of an annoyance sometimes. Like they pour it on so thick it's almost like they're being fake. People who are too nice kinda make me think they're being sarcastic and I don't pick up on it.
But yeah, I'll do that. :)

I say thank you and graciously accept the compliment.
I think it makes people feel good that way. I don't think it's polite to have someone compliment you and then you go "oh my god what? My hair looks awful, i'm so fat" blah blah blah It's like your dissing their opinion.

My best friend and I were discussing this the other day as some guys in a large obnoxious pick-up truck drove by us and whistled...
Is that a compliment?!
She actually said she'd asked some guy friends if they randomly whistle at girls and if so, why. A couple of them admitted to this bizarre behaviour and told her that they just wanted to let the girl know she's lookin good and to keep up the good work or something like that. I just think it's odd.
I don't take compliments well unless it's from someone quite close to me. From strangers I get weirded out, I try to graciously say 'Thank You' and be done with it but I just feel goofy.

I agree with that. I don't like bashing on myself if someone says something nice, but I don't like agreeing with them either...I just want to be modest and I don't know how to pull that off casually.
When the lady said I was a breath of fresh air and every office should have a Diana, I just played it off and said "Well, they probably did, but she probably got fired for inappropriate office pranks." And that was the end of that. It worked nicely.

they don't really bother me, but i usually don't know what to say after. so i just sort of sit there and grin or something

From now on, everytime someone starts laying it on real thick, ask to borrow some money.
Seriously.
"Oh, Diana, I don't know what we would do around here without you!"
"Well, if that's really how you feel, then let me hold down a ten spot until Friday."
or
"Oh, Diana, you are worth more to this office than you'll ever know!!"
"Am I worth a twenty until payday?"
Not only will people stop praising you, they'll stop talking to you all together.
No need to thank me, dear. That's why I'm here.

I never give compliments to anyone. Not that compliments don't run through mind, but I've just learned to keep my mouth shut. I remember walking down the street a couple of summers ago with my friend Rob and we passed a girl who was really cute, so I innocently said, "You're cute." She tells me I'm rude.
Tried it again just the other night. "Fuck off", I think, was what I was told that time.
So I just shut the fuck up. Don't say nothing to nobody.
As far as me getting compliments.....not alot. I don't really make myself approachable. 'If I don't already know you then I don't want to. Go away.' is pretty much how I am. I do get the smartass bullshit from my friends, though, "Hey, you went a whole day without a fight!! Congratulations!!" "You haven't been patted down by the cops once this week!! I'm proud of you!!" That kind of dumbass shit.
Other than that, I am compliment free.

I just got an email from the coworker who compliments too much.
Subject: You are Awesome.
Text: Have I told you that you are so witty. Where did you get that quick wit????
I don't even remember what I said/did. I looked at my sent items in my work email, and she wasn't CCed on anything that I sent out, so it must have been something I said. Which really bothers me because I didn't say anything particularly funny today.
I'm just ignoring the email. I mean, what's there to say? :-/

I like it if it's sincere and there's not some icky motive attached.
The woman who lives next door to me is always flattering me, trying to get me to fuck her. She's pretty disgusting trash who happens to have a live-in boyfriend. She might've just tossed him out, though -- this weekend, his clothes (on hangers) made an appearance in our common hallway outside her door.
