View Full Version : The lost art that is the Family Sitcom

There's just been way too many family sitcoms that follow the same tired-ass formula...
Bumbling Idiot Husband + Hot piece of ass wife that the Husband would never be able to get in real life + Nerdy Kid + Troubled and/or sex crazed kid= Family sitcoms in the 90's/2000's
Every family sitcom just tries so hard to be the Honeymooners, and that bolt of lightning will never be caught again.
Other than the rare exception (Married with Children, and early seasons of Roseanne and Cosby Show) the family sitcom is so lame.
Thoughts?

Yeah, sitcoms pretty much suck. I can barely tolerate them. There are exceptions, though.

Yeah, it sort of makes you appreciate family ties. I mean, hippie parents, republican son, ditzy popular daughter.
Or Fresh Prince. Young east coast kid from poor neighborhood moves in with rich Beverly Hills relatives.
The sitcoms I like aren't usually the family ones. I liked WKRP a lot. And Night Court. You know, ones that are more about a specific work environment.

don't forget the recent trend of having an unwanted adult relative living with the family.

2 and 1/2 men fall into the category but I actually do like the show. IM mostly a sports guy however.

now that (http://www.br-online.de/kultur-szene/thema/filmszene_bayern/foto/glas4.jpg) was good ol tv (y)
I long for the days of politically incorrect sitcoms. The days when Archie Bunker could call his son in law a Meathead or Pollock.....or complain when the coloreds moved in next door and Jefferson called him a honkey. Believe it or not I remember a line from my favorite sitcom Sanford & Son.....Fred got a ticket and called the officer a racist in court. The Judge said--what makes you think that he is racist and Fred G Sanford yelled--there are enough ni...ers in here to make a tarzan movie. The room erupted in yelling and I remember being stunned and then dying from laughter.
Those types of shows would be taken off the air today but they were well done and always had a message about real situations.
I was in tesco's tonight and seen dvds of 2 point 4 kids. It made me laugh.

I think when it comes to family sitcoms The Simpsons qualifies, even though it's animation. it has the ingredients, bumbling dad and nerdy kid wise.
To introduce my daughter to the world of sitcoms as we don't get TV here, I bought her the first three seasons of Home Improvement, Keeping Up Appearances. She loves them both dearly. That could well be classed as abuse in some places.

Yeah. It'll make me sound like a pig, but having a baby didn't agree with her figure.
It also seemed that Doug turned into a live-action Homer Simpson around the same time.
That's when they lost me.
