I wonder what (if anything) he'll be doing on this album. Maybe spoken word performance?

his role will be huge I'm sure. listen to some of that ethiopian jazz from broken flowers (the movie) and picture some cool scratching and samling behind it.....at least it sounds like a good idea, to me

Good point. If we see any hip hop cuts, I'm sure his presence will be felt. Other than that, maybe nothing.

Sounds unlikely.

I don't think so, I've heard music before that was jazzy and instrumental music with turntables behind it. Sabotage was an instrumental song before Adrock put vocals to it. I think they used to call sabotage "Chris Rock" before the vocals were added.

Chris Rock? I don't think I've heard that one before. Very interesting.

Do you think they'll put vocals to any tracks?

it's in the lil booklet that comes with sounds of science :)

"Sabotage" was one of the first songs recorded and the very last one to be finished on Ill Communication. While we were recording at Tin Pan Alley, we would play these jazzy hippie jams for hours. Some of them came out kind of funky, and a bunch of them remained bad jazzy hippie jams. This guy named Chris ran the place. He was cool, but he never really hung out - maybe 'cause he was a little bored with the noodling.

Anyways, Yauch came in one day with this idea for a song where the fuzz bass keeps playing and we would all do these hits and stops to bring like suspense and drama. As we were recording it, Chris runs in the room and starts freaking out. He's all, "This is the shit!! This shit rocks!!!" for really feeling it. We didn't know what to do with it, so we called it "Chris Rock," and for like a year it was just an instrumental. We knew it should have vocals, so after a couple ideas and things, two weeks before we handed in the record, I went to Mario's house and did the vocals on his 8-track. Chris, I hope you're happy.

Dude named Chris used to come in, say "This Rocks!".

DM, they've had scratching on a couple of instrumentals. But if this is in fact a concept album, how would they make it fit?

All the fanboys are going to hate me for saying this but...

Mix Master Mike represents the homogenization of the Beastie Boys.
It was the beginning of the end when he showed up.

All flare and no soul.

I don't really think you're qualified to say that.

I agree with some of the critics that TT5B sounded like a 45 minute "3 MCs and 1 DJ" with the excessive scratching and distractions. I don't know how much a role MMM had in that, but it has been around since he joined them before Hello Nasty. So if he has any part in that, hopefully they limit how much they use him, especially if it is an instruments album.

I love TT5B, but I still can't believe it got 5 stars in RollingStone magazine, that really shocked me. I mean I love the album but I would expect at most 4. RollingStone never gives 5 stars for anything, 5 stars is considered "classic" by them.

I hope he's not scratching in the instrumental / punk / rock tracks. I don't like it when that happens.

was the 5 star review in the magazine, or was it only an RS online review?

it was in the magazine. usually the online reviews are the same exact reviews as the one's in paperback.

i don't agree with it being a five star album. but what really baffled me was that you'd think a five-star album, considered classic by rolling stone, would at least garner a cover story (especially from such a big group thatr hadn't released an album in six years), i mean, i'm pretty sure that issue had some douche bag on it like ashton kutcher or some other non-deserver.

TT5B was a fantastic return to form. It gets way more heat around here than it deserves. But I don't think it was a 5 star album. I can't help but wonder whether the anti-Bush stance the Beasties took on the album helped the notoriously leftist RS to pad the score a little bit.

Just a thought.

I totally agree with you Brother. Rolling stone used to be very PRO Beastie boys in the HN days, but things have changed as far as I see. they do deserve a cover again, no matter what the new sound is. they only have 2 covers in their history as a band. 94 & 98

HEY Paulb, sorry I dont' know how to use the quote thingy but I loved broken flowers too, that director is really interesting and has a subtle directing style. I love the music, it made me think of what the boys are trying to do in the studio right now, I could be wrong. but I need some new music to listen to while I'm jonesing for the new album
