Do you own a lot of stuff? Have you worked hard for it? How much help have you received from your parents(financially)? Are you poor? Do you make good money? What was the last extravagant purchase you made? Are you better/worse off than your peers? Your parents? Do you have a lot saved in the bank? Or tied up in property/investments?
I'll go first; I work three days a week, so I can study. We just moved into a shoebox, and I drive my wife's old car. We did, however, just get her finance for a new car. But she pretty much carries the financial burden, even though it's our money (yeah, right). So we have internet and Xbox lol lol. We are putting off having a lot of dough coming in for the sake of me getting a degree and hopefully having better earning power down the line. We have about 17k in the bank (which we saved while working in the U.K and while I was still working full time).
Parents never really helped with anything. Not for a lack of wanting to, we just do things ourselves, and get by like that.
You go.

All I have is because of my parents. Car, computer, home, bed, tv, etc.
I'm kinda useless I guess.

Hey now, I'm not trying to call anyone useless.
Everything I've got/own is because I worked hard at college and university and now do the same 9-5.
Also, I don't have a lot of debt because whilst studying I did a shit load of freelance design work which always pays better than a bar job etc etc. I still do this now even though I have a full time design job.
So, I'd say that i'm not loaded but if there is something that I need or want I don't have to worry about the financial reprocussions. (y)

oooh. oh god.
this week, actually (and curiously), i will have paid off the entirety of my £1,800 overdraft. i've been working on paying it off for the past few months, ever since my FLAT. OUT. BROKE thread which i am totally going to bump when i don't hear those depressing "your account is overdrawn by.." tones from the phone banking robot.
i don't have any savings. 17 grand! my god. tbh, i will feel like the richest person in the world when i remove my overdraft and can be like "yo, i may only have £3.40 in the bank but at least it is mine".
i earn absolute pish in my current full time job. i actually earn more in my part time job, which is why i pretty much work 7 days a week, recently. however, full time job are fixin' to create a new uppitty position for me because i'm so shit hot, which will mean more money, but i think that will take ages  also they're trying to get me to do the business school's website in my spare time for more cash, so here's hoping.
i worry about pensions (i doubt we'll have them by the time i'm of age) and savings. i will start saving when i have a proper job, with a proper contract. sigh.
my dad has been paying my rent until quite recently. obscenely recently, infact (n) which i am really ashamed of, because i graduated in 2005 and i'm 24 in the summer! but, i guess, i would not have been able to claw my way out of the overdraft "you have ZERO pounds in your account!" if it wasn't for him. i paid all my other bills - heating, electricity, gas, broadband, sky tv, but the rent was so disabling he had to help me out. but we've cut the cord now, so i'm really pleased. it was getting a bit ridiculous. i wish i could have been so strong of mind i could have said "i can do this without you" but.. i couldn't.
i don't have a lot of "stuffs" but i guess having digital tv and broadband is a luxury. if i want something 'big' i enjoy the months or whatever of working to earn enough for it. like with the wii, i worked like a shitter (ranald paid for half for christmas) and i was like oooh no way, i worked a billion weekends to pay for this! excellent!
i doubt i will get on the property ladder before i am 30. that's just the way it is here. i won't be able to do it unless i get, like, married or something, and i dinnae think that's on the cards!

I make pretty good money at my job but I'd never know it cuz I'm paying off lots of debt. Some from back when I thought film school wasn't a waste of time and some from the feature film I made lol.
I'm probably going to get a part time job soon to speed up my rate of debt pay off. Also, because eventually I'd like to move to California and actuall get involved in film for real but I've got to be in a much different financial place to do so.
But I pay for everything I have and that feels pretty good even when I'm broke as fuck which is always.

I was earning ok money up until about October last year but now am contracting which has roughly tripled my income which is very nice. But I am also aware that it's a volatile market so am making the most of it. I own my own flat and car, plus I have the nice luxuries - nice tv, laptop, camera, ipod etc.
But I have worked ever since I was 13 or so and throughout uni. My folks paid for my fees and stuff while I was there, but I also worked nights and holidays for socialising money. Other than the time my parents gave me as a gift the money for my stamp duty when I got my flat, I haven't taken had money from them since I left uni (except christmas and birthdays).
I have money in the bank and a couple of pension plans. My next big expense is doing my bathroom up next month and new carpets. Other than that, it's save save save.

at the moment, fuck no, i only make about $30000 a year. all i get from my parents is a tank of fuel once a month, but that's the way i want it. i always feel guilty when i get anything from them. they did work their asses off to put my brother and i thru private school. like they worked alot of weekends for the overtime just for the extra money. they're approaching 60 and even tho my brother and myself have moved out they still want to spend money on us instead of themselves.
i have a job opportunity that if i accept i will make enough money to be well off. it will be quite boring and intense, and i dont know if i will be able to handle it. but i wanna take it so i can pay my parents back for all the support they've given me over the years. one thing i want to do for them is buy them decent cars, because that's the one thing they've majorly sacrificed on. my dad loves his ute's and mum loves her 4WD's so if i take this job i want to buy mum a X5 and my dad a HSV Maloo. i think it's the least they deserve.
they have put alot of pressure on me to do well in life ( i'm the only person ever in my extended family to go on and do tertiary education). but that pressure has made me what i am today. i do love my parents, i think they think the opposite tho, hence the hating everytime they do something for me
wow that was a bit more personal than i expected

no. i earn about the same as icy, i think after tax but i can't remember. its not a lot anyway.
i'm in debt and it stresses me out. i can't seem to get on top of it.
my parents helped me out when i lived at home (free board, no bills except my own mobile, about half of my food provided) but since i moved out they don't really do much, except i work with my dad and he buys me lunch or a drink sometimes. my parents are relatively well off, but prefer to spend money on holidays rather than large houses or fancy cars.
food and weed are my two major vices. i find it hard to skimp on food and buy cheap food or not eat meat, so after rent and bills most of my money goes to food.
i don't own much, i don't have a car or anything big. probably my earrings an ex made for me are the most expensive thing i own, followed by my tv which isn't worth much at all. don't own a fridge or a washing machine or anything.
i feel bad complaining knowing that its my own fault and there are others worse off. but i feel so broke and poor and depressed. i sit at home a lot because i can't afford to go out. even the public transport fare is too much sometimes, let alone drinking or whatever.

wow. thanks :) the sad part is, i don't really have any ambition or a passion for anything, until i do, i definitely won't succeed.
i only do about 35 hours a week, i know i can get paid more and get more hours elsewhere, its just hard to get the courage to get up and get a new job, when mine is so easy. also i hate training people so having to get the office in order and train someone isn't something i'm looking forward to doing.
wow I can't believe people would post their salary on here. My mum doesn't even know how much I earn

Do you own a lot of stuff? I would think so. I don't rent/lease anyof it.
Have you worked hard for it? Not really, but I did work.
How much help have you received from your parents(financially)? Not a lot once I moved out
Are you poor? I sleep in a house I bought, drive a 2007 car I own outright, but right now have $0 in my pocket, so maybe.
Do you make good money? No, but my wife does.
What was the last extravagant purchase you made? Probably buying 2 new cars within 2 weeks of each other.
Are you better/worse off than your peers? Better than most, but not all.
Your parents? No, their house is Paid In Full
Do you have a lot saved in the bank? Yes
Or tied up in property/investments? Yes

i don't make what i'm worth, but really, who does?
i live in a nice apartment that's downtown, my husband cooks me fabulous meals, and i have everything i need and pretty much everything i want. i have no savings, yet, but that will come in time. i also have no property, but that will come in time as well.
i have a wonderful husband who loves me, i have fantastic siblings and the best friends a person could ask for. while i may not have a mother or father anymore, i do have a stepfather who is still in my life and is always there for me. so, i think i'm rich and no one can tell me otherwise.
i seem to be doing ok
i'm in school, so i'm not working. i saved up a few thousand dollars the summer before i came here through working, and student loans are getting me by now. i have a very comfortable amount of money in the bank through them, so i don't have to worry about bills or anything, but of course the money isn't technically mine, i'll have to pay back whatever i spend, so i have to keep remembering that.
i got pretty lucky actually. i rented an apartment with health code violations, so after the first two months, we were able to witthold rent while the landlord company took its sweet-ass time fixing it. the back rent is being waived on the condition that we all move out before april 1st, which we were all planning to do anyways, so i came out on top of that one, i guess.
but even if i didn't, i'd have been able to pay.

Do you own a lot of stuff?
Not a LOT, but I own what I need plus a few extras.
Have you worked hard for it?
Yes I have. I worked my way through college and I'm working 2 jobs now to save for grad school.
How much help have you received from your parents(financially)?
I had to pay for my own college and car, they let me live under their roof and eat their food for free, and also added me to their cell phone plan. Since graduating, they're still helping me out with gas, cell phone, and car insurance (a total of $100 per month) because they know how hard I'm trying to save for grad school so they're helping me out a little since they have a little extra cash since retiring.
Are you poor?
Nah.
Do you make good money?
I make a decent salary. About $7,000 more than the average for entry-level fresh-outta-college positions.
What was the last extravagant purchase you made?
Plane tickets to Alberta. It's the only extravagant purchase I ever make.
Are you better/worse off than your peers?
Peers meaning friends? Well, I'm friends with science majors who work for large pharmaceutical companies, so worse off. But I'm also friends with a few people without their degrees and I make more than them. So, somewhere in the middle.
Your parents?
Worse off. Those suckas made a bundle by selling near DC and moving to NC.
Do you have a lot saved in the bank?
How much is a lot? I save more than most people, I think. I'll put away $500 a month towards just saving.
Or tied up in property/investments?
Nah, son.
Overall assessment: I'm doing alright, but could be doin' better.

I own my own home, have my car and credit cards paid off, and have a decent 401K. I would like more savings, but I have a spending issue that I'm trying to work on. When I was married, I was very well off, thanks to my father-in-law, and I've been trying to adjust to my unmarried life and spending habits accordingly.

nice question ! my father asked me to stand surety for his company whatever , so I was just 18 and I normaly have to get some Money from a savings bond for my driving license and the first car , but the fate made it that he asked me to lend him this money and to stand surety for his company ( just him driving / carry things arround in an truck 7.5t as a sub company for a bigger company ) , he asked me and I never say no to my father in my live .......
so I saw my father never again ( he lives 400 km away ) and the company get insolvency and now I got -30k at the finance office ... my father didn`t call me since that happend and its 6 years ago ..... so when I ever see him again i kill him i swear by my mother ! ( she have not enough money to support me / 2 litte brothers and 1 little sister )
So every thing I ever had in my live was the result of hard working by my self ! so sometimes i get some illicit work to get some extra money - so I work as a plumber ( like MArio and Joshi ) but in a agency for temporary work
so I have not enough money to live and not less enough to die (n)
But a consolation is that I know that I live better than ca 4.000.000.000 people on this world - so fucking what , its just money !

Do you own a lot of stuff? No, I own next to nothing. A bed, a table, a chair, a toaster, and my laptop - that's about it.
Have you worked hard for it? Hells yes, I've worked full-time all through university and paid all my own tuition.
How much help have you received from your parents(financially)? Almost nothing.
Are you poor? I wouldn't say so.
Do you make good money? No, but more than minimum wage.
What was the last extravagant purchase you made? Trip to Florida for reading week.
Are you better/worse off than your peers? Depends who you ask - I have friends who own their own homes and make very good money, and I have friends who live in shitty dives and have no education or real prospects at all. I guess I'm better off than some, and worse off than others.
Your parents? Way worse off. My parents have done very well.
Do you have a lot saved in the bank? I have less money in the bank now than I did when I was born. Let's hear it for overdraft!
Or tied up in property/investments? Afraid not.
Overall I'm not in very good financial shape, but it doesn't really matter because I live simply. I rather like it.

my parents are well below the poverty line and always have been. they struggle on the pension.
i figure me and joe combined would earn about 40- 45k. i'm not sure though. we spend a lot of our money on technological stuff. we don't have a car or anything, so that is a big money saver. also we're not going out, buying cigarettes or alcohol.
so i suppose in short, we're better off than my parents have ever been, but the fact that we don't spend our money on much stuff means that we have savings and stuff.

^Yeah, I never realized how much alcohol/going out costs. I do it once or twice a month, go out to a restaurant or bar or something. I have one friend who makes $2,000 a month (after taxes), pays for her car and tuition ($800 a month) and STILL can't save anything. The other $1,200 a month goes towards alcohol and bars and restaurants and cigarettes, for her and her boyfriend. I mean, damn.
I'm proud to be a saver, yo.

We do OK. My salary is ok for the type of work i do. I'm earning less these days because since October and the arrival of Ava i have been working just three days a week. We own our own house (or rather the bank does...) and we are lucky to have two cars and lots of nice things.
I graduated from university in 1997 completely debt free thanks to my (wonderful) parents who paid for my rent for those three years. I worked my arse off too though. When I wasn't in lectures I was working in a cinema. I toiled 7 days a week ripping tickets and sweeping up spilled popcorn.
We don't have much saved in the bank but we both have excellent pension schemes in place and a trust fund for Ava.

I'm doing alright.
I worked in bars and in entertainment lighting in my late teens early 20's until i got framed by my manager cuz we clashed at a university tavern and got the sack. (apparently i stole 8 bottles of vodka!!! never happened) I was really pissed off at the time cuz all of a sudden i was unemployed and i had NEVER been unemployed since i was 14. I lived in a rent free house with my GF that grew pot and we just looked after the house. After a home invasion by bikers we moved out that night and were homeless too. a mate of mine owned a pub in the city so we moved in there for a couple of months. living in a pub in the middle of the city is great at first but we got tired of it.
Then i landed thru my family a job installing poker machines. After working my way up the ladder I now have a company car that i can drive anywhere for free, a company phone and i work 4 days on 4 days off. And get 5 weeks annual leave a year!!! Freakin sweet. Got some shares in the company too that are now worth about 9K. prob on around $39K a year. (the package is worth alot more when u include the car).
Still broke tho, paying off old loans. a small addiction with ebay doesnt help the cause. hope to buy my own house within a couple of years.

Lessee....
First and foremost, I'm free.
I am almost 36 years old and as of right now I have no major health problems.
My eyes work.
My legs work.
My arms work.
My internal organs work.
I am, for the most part, of sound mind.
To me, these are the fundamentals. The rest of that shit is gravy.
Yeah, I would say I'm doing OK.
I read somewhere once that there are two ways to become rich.......
make more money or desire less shit.

im not rich... but im not poor. i earn about $35K/year. (although im looking for something in the $40-50K range currently...)
my bi-monthly pay check covers my bills/portion of mortgage and i have left over for food and some fun.... but not a lot of fun.... and I donthave much left to save (i save about $100/month)
i have school loans that im still using, and not paying on yet... so thats gonna suck next year...
the only time my parents ever gave me money was December 2005. i dont know why, but they gave me $5,000 which i used to pay off my focus to get a new car. otherwise they spend all their money on frivilous things while not saving up for my little sister's college. great
i dont own anything... well except my car, i guess, but thats financed, so really i dont own it until its paid off, or something. at least its not leased.
i could not afford to live by myself in this area, unless i rented an apartment in the ghetto... but since i value my life i chose to live with someone, currently seth, who makes almost double what i do, even though we work for the same company and i've been there almost six years when he's only been there for just over 2.
man it pays to have a penis.
within the past few years i've gone to scraping by and over withdrawing my checking accounts and maxing out all my credit cards to staying within my budget and saving up some (like for vacation in august, just the girls! woohoo!)
so yeah, im doing ok.

Don't worry so much about not owning anything yet. You're only 25. You're not supposed to own anything this early. But the simple fact that you have a mortgage means you are well on your way. I've got ten years on you and I've never even seen a mortgage.

Most of my money goes toward school. Much of it goes toward my cars. The rest spent on whatever I need. It leaves pretty much nothing to be saved. I also live with my dad. A year 1/2 from now when I transfer schools and move out it will be interesting financially but hopefully when I graduate and get a job I can live a modest lofe and support my habits.

I'm ok. I'm thinking of selling the house in Louisiana. I'm just tired of putting up with it. It's only going to be sold for 24K.
The other house I own, my mom stays in. It's not a mansion or anything. It's just a nice cozy one story house in a nice quiet town- my hometown at that. I've got a 2004 Jeep Wrangler and I let my mom basically have it because she drives a beat up 93 Chevy Blazer that'll probably end up dying on her shortly. It's very cold where she lives and I'd hate to have that thing break down on her. There's also no damn way I'm gonna drive in NY.
I have alot of toys. I've worked hard for them. I've worked hard for them. I live in a small apartment right now. The kitchen and living room are in the same room but it's a brand new building.
I've got a decent job and so does my wife so, we're doing well.

I'm not making very much money. I've got no savings. I'm not living paycheck to paycheck anymore though. I've been working since I was 15. I think actually working and living comfortably on very little money has affected my motivation for earning more. I'm worse off than some of my peers, but the ones that make less money than me have parents who float them.
but I certainly can't do physical labor much longer, I've already got tendonitis.
I've gotten help from parents now and again for emergencies, but most of my schooling was paid by loans and a gift from one of my mother's wealthy boyfriends. $10,000. ;)
overall, I'm quite a disappointment to my mother. but I'm an only child and have suffered enumerable traumas, so I'm allowed to flounder for now. my uncles were all good-for-nothings until their early 30's. 10+ years later, they're all making over 6 figures. it's a family tradition to be a fuck up and then either turn super successful or die. so it could go either way.

i guess i am. i'm happy if i'm comfortable. i don't have an ipod, or a fancy car and we don't go on fancy holidays and i'm happy about that. we own a nice house, which we can afford to heat, have good jobs and can afford good food. we're careful about what we spend our money on.
my parents in law have a lot of money, not much of which they share with their kids tho. but what it has taught me is that money is not a good thing. my m-i-l throws money at things and people like it's going to fix everything and it's awful. also, they've spent the best part of the past decade battling out their divorce in courts and they still haven't settled. it just makes me loathe money.
i have a weakness for the odd diamond ring tho.

I believe the word you are looking for is "ducats".
Or, perhaps, "buckets".

Don't I know it bro!
And when I get some extra money it's usually spent on a game, cd, or dvd.
But in all honesty, I've come far since I moved out. I've learned the value of a dollar a bit more.
