I avoided it here and there after a couple shitty wines. I decided to give it a shot again. First was a shitty, piss tasting Pinot Grigio. It has special meaning now, so I look at it differently.

My roommate also had brought home Merlot by Vampire and that was some terrible Merlot, but then again, I'm not a big Merlot fan.

Then she got some Syrah and it's ok, but kind of shitty. I'm finishing the bottle right now.

Finally, I spotted some semi-cheap Pinot Noir. Loved it. Loved it, loved it, loved it. Now I have an expensive bottle of Pinot Noir sitting in my room waiting to be opened.

I seem to prefer red wines over white.

What wines do you like most and any recommendations?

I like almost all types of wine except cognac. Not crazy about cognac.

Wine is kind of like beer or tobacco or sushi or whatever: most people who don't like it were first introduced to cut-rate bullshit.

I polished off two bottles of wine by myself the other night. Some red crap called McWilliams from Seven-Eleven. Friend didn't want them so I took them. I was hating life the next day. I had forgotton devastating wine hangovers are.

yellow tail is pretty good, i think. i like the shiraz. cabernet sauvignon isn't bad.

i don't think that yellow tail is classified as "good" wine, it's pretty cheap, but i think it tastes pretty good for the price.

then again, i don't think i've ever had a wine more expensive than yellow tail, so what do i know. it's probably the budweiser of wines or something.

wine can be a very pleasant way to get drunk, but like hardnox said, it's easy to have too much and feel like a turd the next day. i've had 2 bottles before, a couple times actually. it's a really bizarre hangover, it like, comes and goes. you'll feel ok for a while, then suddenly, in the middle of the day, after everything seems fine, you'll feel like you have to puke. but you hold it in and you just feel dizzy all day

Yeah, exactly. The shit is real easy to drink. I killed both bottles in probably twenty minutes. No, I'm not an alchie. I was just really thirsty. I went immediately to bed. Woke up the next day still drunk. I didn't straighten out until about three or four that afternoon. My stomach is turning now just thinking about it.

Yech.

Chug. It was crap wine and it was warm at that. On top of that, I used to be a little bit of drinker when I was younger. I just can't fuck with the hangovers anymore so I might drink once every two months now.

When I do drink, I guess old habits die hard.

I like pinot noir and chardonnay the best. I have been very into wine for the past 13 years or so and am quite the snob when it comes right down to it. Anything under $8-ish is gonna be shit no matter what (unless it's on sale at below that price).

I live only about 3 hours from Wine Country, so we get an incredible selection that most of the board wouldn't have access to. Some of the grocery store-sold wines that may be available that are good are:

When I'm on a budget, I usually go for Estancia or Colombia Crest Chardonnay, although Mirassou's Chardonnay was good on one occasion, not so good on another. Smoking Loon can do you well if you are into the reds on about $5-7/bottle.

When I am not watching my wallet, I enjoy Rombauer, Cuvaison, Chateau Montelena, Sonoma Cutrer, Hess Collection (not Hess Select), Silver Oak and many others. These will usually run from $25+/bottle

La Crema has a wonderful Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for only about $14-16/bottle.

Yep and yep. Estancia is pretty dependable $7/bottle wine -- at least, the chards.

La Crema's good stuff too.

Gallo used to be a joke, but they've been making pretty good stuff for a while.

Mondavi is generally good and affordable.

Red wine is way more likely to give me a headache the next day than whites. I assume it's all the tannins.

Some reds from Chile are really good, too, but people have discovered them, so the prices shot way up. Used to be, you could get a good solid B+ red for $5-$6. Those were the days.

Like shiraz?

Australia makes some good chardonnays, but by the time they get here, they're a little pricey. The really good ones.

i don't really know that much about wine. all i know is that i enjoy shiraz, and pinot grigio (thanks beff). normally i'll drink red wine, but i've been trying to branch out into the white wine circuit in preparation for the summer. red wine makes me awfully sleepy, too.

i've said this countless times before but after one particularly debauched dinner party after glasses and glasses of red wine i almost spewed on my boyfriend while we were in the bath. i have never seen the man move more quickly in my entire life. can you imagine? someone spewing on you in the fucking bath? real sexy. i'd have been scarred for life.

but, um, anyway, that was hella cheap student red wine. now i try to not go for the piss poor ones if i can avoid it. don't drink half as regularly as i used to though - sarah is the bad influence. she'll always suggest having a glass of red wine with our meals. she's on tour now though, so i don't really make a habit of, um, drinking by myself night after night after night. oh wait...

ahhh wine.

My family has rich wine heritage.

My great great great grandfather Johann Gramp planted the first vines on the bank of Jacob's Creek in the Barossa Valley. We grew vines there for 100 years until orlando bought rights to the name in about 1973. Now Jacob's Creek is one of the biggest wine brands in the world.

Which is funny, because in Australia Jacob's Creek is seen as a really bargain basement cheap shitty wine. I don't know why the rest of the world goes nuts over it. I have been there many times, Jacob's Creek isnt much bigger than a storm drain. In SA we have 5 great regions, Mclaren vale, Coonawarra, Clare valley, Barossa and Langhorne Creek. All making the world's best.

Well that's enough of a talking shit bragging rant.

I love wine.

Spoken like a true Scot!

I hate wine, cannot drink it at all. I used to work in a wine place and got given loads of free bottles, and could have tried all this expensive shit and stuff from all over, but I just gave it away. I wish I worked in a vodka place back then.
