I added it to my Tivo list. I watched it and I am going to give it a chance. I do not think most TV viewers will give it a chance because it will take time to get familiar with the characters. It is well done which is no surprise since Paul Haggis is the writer and director. I really don't think it will make it to next season but I will be watching.

Why is this family called The Black Donnellys? They are a bunch of Irish kids.

"Black Irish"

but i agree that most viewers won't like it... they are unable to suspend disbelief and keep comparing to Sleepers/Sopranos/Godfather/Boondock Saints/Brotherhood

Joey Ice Cream is the man

Was the term "Black Irish" derived in the United States? I have a good friend from Ireland and I have never heard the term come out of his mouth. I am guessing it is Irish with dark hair and eyes...correct? I will look it up but I somehow think this term is rarely used to describe an Irish Clan:confused:

I think the Spaniards conquered Ireland for awhile or a hoarde of them moved in or something. Their decendants, with dark eyes and hair, are the black Irish.

^nope.

no one knows for sure, but there is a myth that Spanish Armada survivors ended up in southern Ireland, but that more than likely to be untrue.

could be a migration of Celts from western Europe, where they existed before the Romans came along, and they happened to end up eventually in Ireland.

genetics shows they have a strinking similarity to the Basque people, especially when compared to the rest of the spanish peoples' DNA.
