View Full Version : What happened to Rock music?

I can barely get into any of it anymore, it almost all sounds the same to me. I've been listening to almost nothing but hip-hop for the longest time and after hearing Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots I've been wanting to start trying to listen to more rock-oriented music.
Can anybody recommend me any newer bands that are pretty good? Try to make it groups who experiment at least a little in their music and try not to make it too mainstream if you can.

I'm not entirely sure who you're looking for (just "new" rock, right?), but I think the above tries to do their own thing.

Rock is buried next to Hip Hop."Rap Criticism Grows In The Hip-Hop Community As More People Tire Of Troublesome Images" (http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory?id=2912686&page=1)
I can barely get into any of it anymore, it almost all sounds the same to me.Too bad radio is so shitty nowadays because in the days before the Telecommunications Act took effect(1996), most stations would take a chance on playing something unknown they thought their audience might like - this is how MANY new acts got exposed. But now, everything has to fit into very specific broadcasting categories dreamt up by the the big media corporations' clueless marketing departments and if it doesn't, that "off-topic" artist or track doesn't have a chance.* :( Plus, the company's shareholders have them by the short-n-curlies so most radio corporations are too chicken to try anything that isn't proven to make them 20 million dollars every month.
These are huge reasons why the playlists of so many stations play music that sounds almost identical.....and why I basically don't listen to the radio anymore.
To most corporations more worried about their shareholders than their own *customers*, music is not art but is strictly a product, somethign to be bought/sold and they don't understand why it can't be cateogrized like a car or a piece of furniture. That confusion is likely to land the Big Four labels (EMI/Sony/Warner/Universal) in bankruptsy court soon if they don't make an effort at fully understanding that issue.
* I think the very popular early 80s song "She Blinded Me With Science" (http://youtube.com/watch?v=kt0ArlG1Zfc) by Thomas Dolby (99% of the album is very good IMO) would be one of those tracks that would fall between the cracks in todays world of radio: is it pop? Dance? Electronica?

I've got a Clutch thread down there. I really suggest you check them out.
Also, try Nebulla, Isis, Corrosion of Conformity, Kyuss, Fu Manchu, Eagles of Deathmetal.
Rock is still there man. Some bands just prefer not to hit the mainstream.

I know it is but it's just so hard for me to find something I enjoy. I think I just naturally prefer hip-hop because I've never really had a hard time finding new rap groups to enjoy.
Then again it might be due to rock taking a back seat for all these years...

I don't mind listening to popular stuff, that doesn't bother me. Mainstream rock does, like that stuff they play on MTV where they all sound the same, now that bothers me.

Oh, and don't listen to Cosmo. Deerhoof is pretentious, unlistenable crap.
You may also like stuff like The Decembrists, even though they lost the guitar solo-off to Colbert. :D
And "mainstream"? I didn't just recommend Creed or Papa Roach, I recommended folks that fit Jitters' criteria of artists who don't try to sound like everyone else. Sure, they're on the more popular side, but that's beside the point.

In that case, you can suggest alternatives to the alternative (which is fine). The "don't listen to him" part just came across the wrong way, I guess. If he indicated he was already acquainted with TV On The Radio or The Arcade Fire, I'd have thought of others.

there's plenty of good rock n' roll out there, you just need to look harder. however i think the problem nowadays is that the british kids aren't growing up in gloomy, post-war conditions, listening to american blues music, which about fifty years ago lead to the greatest period in rock, ie beatles, stones, yardbirds, animals, pretty things, john mayall & the bluesbreakers, jeff beck group, small faces, the who, the kinks, cream, the pink floyd, traffic, led zeppelin, humble pie, t-rex, david bowie, savoy brown, the faces, free et al.

LCD Soundsystem
The Shins (especially the latest album)

Shout Out Out Out Out (I'll be truthful, they're more fun live than recorded, but their album is cool anyways)
The Dead 60's

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I been meaning to listening to some of these people for a while anyway.
Does anybody know any good rock groups who incorparate rap in any way? The key word being good because the last thing I want is for someone to say some nu-metal band or anything. It would probably be a good way to take baby steps into listening to more rock oriented music.

Besides something like Rage Against The Machine (which I'm sure you're familiar with, anyways), I'm drawing a blank. Obviously Beck is someone who incorporates (among lots of other things) hip-hop with his rock music, but that's probably someone you're aware of anyways. If for some reason you're not, by all means, go ahead.
Stuff like Handsome Boy Modelling School (who are a hip-hop group) will bring in the rock for some crossover (i.e. collaborations featuring Mike Patton, Franz Ferdinand, Cat Power and such).
Sadly, too many rock meets hip-hop encounters are nu-metal.

I've heard a few of the songs of their cover album and I like some of the rap songs they covered. With them coming back now it might be the perfect time to jump on the bandwagon
I think I'll look for their stuff right now and see if it's well priced.

Sorry but My Chemical Romance are just shit and the singer is an annoying fucking cunt. I'd love to stamp on his head.

They are more like a Muse-esque thing. Its sort of the opposite of the indie pop thing.
