View Full Version : windows vista
does anyone use it? do you like it? i hear it's kind of a pain in the ass. hackers and programmers seem to not like it, but i'm not a programmer or a hacker, i use computers fairly casually. i also hear it's not so hot for gamers. i am a gamer, so i'm a little concerned.
i'm too dumb to understand exactly what's wrong with it though, can anyone explain it to me? i ordered a new laptop, it comes with XP, but it also comes with a free vista upgrade. i'm wondering whether or not i should do it is all
i'm perfectly happy with XP quite honestly, but i said i was happy with windows 98 before i started using XP, and now i couldn't go back.

it's basically real pretty and shit for the majority of users. got some cool interface shit that they elluded to back when it was called longhorn.
it's also got some fancy security features and such, hence the pain with hackers and programers.
my big thing is you dont get all the cool visual treats unless you splurge for the ultimate version and it's retarded price point. really no reason to upgrade just yet. but if nothing else take the free upgrade cd and ebay it or something. Hell as long as photoshop 7 still works with it I'll take the disc off your hands, but I get the feeling it wont.

I heard the upgrade took up 10 gigs. Might want to look into that. I have plenty of space but don't feel the need to just use up 10G's when I'm happy with XP.

today i read it's not very safe..
and the design looks headachish
stay away!
actually i've done a little more reading on it (probably should have done that before asking here but whatever), i think the 10 gigs thing is a little misleading. apparently it uses some program to...do....something...and when you need the memory to run another...program...then it...frees it....up
i'm not very good with computers hang on
"Q: What the fuck? Vista is using up like 800-900 megs just sitting there and I have 1 gig total what the fuck is this bullshit?
A: Vista makes new, more efficient use of system resources via a new feature called SuperFetch, which takes advantage of resources that are just sitting idly by doing things like pre-loading your common programs so they'll open faster. Rest assured that these resources will be freed should another program demand them."
that sounds like ram though, not hard drive space
yeah i'm thinking fuck vista right now, it sounds like some programs don't run too well on it. some i use, like daemon tools and avast and stuff. some games don't seem to run very well on it either, apparently it's got something to do with drivers or i don't know what the hell, but i'll just stick with XP for now, i think

i've had vista through the beta stages and since it was released. i like it a lot. there's some bugs here and there but that's mostly due to OTHER manufacturers and THEIR drivers for THEIR hardware. i find it more intuitive than xp. you don't really NEED it unless you want directX 10. directX is like the coding used for games and such. each directX release is the equivalent of new console releases. each new release features newer/improved graphical and audio capabilities plus some other shit. and only vista will be supporting directX 10 and up. so if you want to play new directX 10 titles you'll need vista and the latest video cards. the only reason why games run a tad slower is again because the drivers for the graphical hardware is in it's infancy. if you don't have money to burn don't get vista until 6 months to a year from now. the best vista to get is home premium. home basic is pretty useless and ultimate is just too expensive with features that you will probably never need or use. i got an upgrade copy for $150. the corresponding xp versions were about the same price when they were released 6 years ago. it's not that much more expensive than what xp was. and of course it looks pretty but that's not really a big deal. oh and if you have 64 bit hardware and want the 64 bit edition you'll need to order it from microsoft. only the 32 bit edition is sold in retail. all you have to do is place an order on microsoft.com and give them the cd key of the purchased 32 bit edition and all they charge is shipping and handling and you'll get your 64 bit edition dvd a few days later.

i use daemon tools with no problem and AVG antivirus is better than avast and works with vista

that's what i read, yeah, but it doesn't change the fact that there's bugs right now.
i think the free copy i'm getting is home premium, but i dunno, i'm gonna hold off on installing it. i don't need DX10 yet.

i've got both vista and xp installed so i can fuck around with vista and still be backed up by xp
vista is cool for sure if you got the right graphics card and memory for it. it also runs smoother than say xp if you do have the right graphics card and memory since it takes advantage of the graphics processor rather than the computer processor.
and as for having to have the ultimate version to get all the cool visual shit, that's not entirely true. having the home basic version which is the cheapest one that comes with most home-type computers you buy is totally shit in that sense. but then there's the business and enterprise versions which do have pretty much everything you need like the ultimate version which also has a bunch of shit you probably won't need. and those business versions go for a lot cheaper. the only difference between the ultimate and say enterprise is it doesn't have media center, media center hd tv cable support, movie maker and dvd maker. and those things are basically just things you would rather have other softwares for anyway.
i'd say if you're not the type of person who likes to be on top of all this computer stuff, stay with xp till you naturally get pushed into using vista after seein what it can do, or after you realize that the market have adjusted to vista so by having xp you're actually takin hits by it.

that sounds pretty much like where i am/what i plan to do, yeah. thanks

Thats usually the way I do things also.
yeah (y)..and like what's been said..it's not like xp is a bad operating system. it's got pretty much what you need. it's gonna take a few months until an optimized directx 10 driver is released anyway. right now the geforce 8800 processor is the only one to support directx 10. ati is steppin in the game too with the radeon x2000 and by the time that hits the market prices will definitely go down and drivers will be optimized and you'll get the full experience.
