No cause the second headliner mostly sucks. Like the Fanta 4. They're german wannabe hip-hoppers. Not much else on that line-up but the Roots, who I saw two weeks ago and Senor Coconut. He's a crazy ass DJ doing Chilenean sounding remixes of Kraftwerk and Sade (y) .

Aren't festivals an easy way to "go on tour"? As far as not having to bring a lot of your own equipment, crew and stuff.
You just kinda show up and perform. The festival do most of the marketing and advertising.

Lots of these places haven't seen the Beasties in ages. It's only fair. They'll tour the US soon enough - and hopefully the UK (Bestival aside) - so try and lay of the negativity for a fucking change.

No negativity was intended in my post. (y)
I think it's awesome what they're doing. Festivals seem to be a great way to play some gigs without having to do a lot of the legwork that formal tours require.
As a concert-goer, I would prefer to a regular tour over a festival...but I ain't gonna complain if I get an opportunity to see the Beasties.

They've been doing European festivals for the better part of their careers

I did a quick back-of-the-envelope calculation and it turns out that there are actually more humans outside of the United States than in. I guess that's why American bands do tours outside of the USA from time to time?

I think the question was "why festivals" more than "why Europe." I think Laver's right -- it's got to be much easier for a band to just show up at a festival than to figure out how to set up their own tour. If there are so many European festivals in the summer, it's a reasonable way to reach a lot of fans.
I am old. I loathe festivals and the kinds of fans who tend to go to them. I'm really, really, really lucky that I've been able to see the Beasties in such great venues over the years. I'm also lucky that the Beasties aren't playing a bunch of small venues this summer, or I'd be tempted to cash in my retirement account and follow them around. :p
I hope this summer's fans all over the world have a really fun time. The Beasties are hitting some really amazing cities on this tour, and it's cool that they're playing some less obvious places. :)
