View Full Version : What if the Beastie Boys Saved Hip-Hop?

I mean, this sounds really wild, but it could certainly happen.

The Beastie Boys were an integal part of making hip-hop mainstream back in the 80s.

Licensed to Ill was classic.

With hip-hop facing troubling times, and a new Beastie Boys album on the horizon, could they save it?

I can feel a classic album coming, and maybe a rejuvination of hip-hop.

Talk about solidifying a legacy...

I really wish they would...

It would be great.

I am listening to Paul's Boutique and Licensed to Ill right now.

Classic stuff, and an album like LTI could save hip-hop.

How?

I like their hip-hop, and I also like Sabotage.

But, I like thier hip-hop the most.

Nah, I meant that they resurrect the hip-hop of the 80s and 90s...

Now, that would be some sweet shit.

I don't listen to music (Besides the Boys) after about 1996.

How come, though?

Becase that is the music I love.

I happen to be a teen right now, but I am hypnotized by the likes of the Beasties, Grandmaster Flash, Run-DMC, 3rd Bass, Whodini, Mantronix, Afrika Bambaataa, etc.

That is real music, and I haven't heard real music in its prime EVER.

I cannot listen to music on the radio, and I get mad when I hear culture frauds like 50 Cent, Young Buck, etc. being played/sung by my peers and friends.

And you never will. So why is that a problem? The music is still there. You get to enjoy that, at least.

as great as the golden era of hip-hop was, reverting back to it isn't going to save rap music. there's tons of stuff that comes out each year that's on that 80s and early 90s tip (really good stuff too), but nobody's listening because it's not new and fresh, not to mention that the original artists of that era will always sound better at it than anyone. a change in regime always takes a new sound or approach. sure the beasties can make a spark and shine the light, but very few "popular" artists would follow them enough to make a significant difference or effort.

for example, i think hello nasty did some remarkable things with hip-hop and took it in some new directions, but nobody joined in or elaborated on it, so it'll just remain a singular, diamond in the rough forever.

But I wish that it would happen. I want people to be exposed to real music.

I always think of a time when I can turn the radio and listen to a song or many songs that I know by heart that doesn't have a (bleep) every 5 seconds.

It must have ruled to hear The Beastie Boys, Run-DMC, The Fresh Prince, etc back to back to back on the radio...

So you mean to tell me that if Run-DMC, the Beastie Boys, MC Serch, Grandmaster Flash, and someone else from the golden age came back and all produced records at the same time, there would be absolutely no influence on music for years to come?

that's a bogus statement. that is, if you're implying that there will never be another flourishing era in music... ever.

i guess if you mean that you'll never see hip-hop in it's prime then that makes sense.

Hello Nasty gets made too big a deal over, so I'm not going there. But Mcduff, you'd cosign shit like the first Handsome Boy album, and 3030 to this user, right? Just to show them how far it went from where it all started? They are sick of commercial rap, after all.

not like you'd think.

it's not like they'd save hip-hop or change the face of it. these people still release music, you just don't hear about it because it's not as dope or fresh as their older stuff (except for the beasties of course).

i don't know why Serch is on that list.

couldn't think of two better examples.(y)

BeastieAlbum07, i think you're more pissed at what gets the airplay than a lack of quality hip-hop. it's a bummer to see the bullshit rise, but there's still plenty of worthwhile and thoughtful records comin' out frequently. including lots of stuff that channels that 80s and early 90s sound.

I meant 3rd Bass, but the point is that if enough promotion and $ pumped in, it would have to gain some exposure.

you just need to look harder, brother. there are so many different artists over various tastes that just about anything I reccomend could easily be argued. so I'm not gonna fall for that one.

kid p mentioned handsome boy modeling school which is a really good one, though. deltron 3030 he said too, but you may think it's too spacy. ummmm, actually Edan sounds like something you could get a hold of. check out Edan's "Beauty and the Beat". It's a great blend of that old school aesthetic with a real progressive twist. a good bridge from then to now. he actually majored in hip-hop history, so I think you'll apppreciate his references and lyrical style.

Well, the speculation is that the new album will be a 60s Northern Soul, Spy-themed, and possibly all-instrumental.

So you may be right about a "classic album coming"...but it's likely to not be hiphop.

truthfully, the Boys don't really get respect from the majority of the Hip Hop community these days, so their ability to influence hip hop as a whole is limited. I think most of the commercial rappers that are "killing" hip hop today see the boys at outsiders, and even as pirates of the culture (which we all know is far from the truth).

Back then, one can distinguish between whats real and whats not (IE Paul Revere, Rymin and stealing)

today, if someone hears about sending col. sanders down to davey jones locker, one might actually go out and find someone by the name of sanders and drown them!

The Beastie Boys helped to invent today's rape, guns and drink rap mentality with Licensed To Ill. They pretty much pioneered it, at least as far as commercial hip-hop was concerned, and it is a large part of what made them successful.

Kinda ironic that you are all saying they don't get enough recognition while complaining that modern mainstream rap is about money, drinking, womanising and shooting people;

"I've got money and juice, twin sisters in my bed, their father had envy so I shot him in the head."

A little know fact is that there are only 20 people on the boards.

We actually post under 100's of different handles and IP addresses. It is an elaborate conspiracy. Perhaps the number will go down to five. But we can still make it appear that there are 100's of posters. It is a fulltime job but the payoffs are enormous (e.g., bling).

It has nothing to do with skin color.

I dance to all the popular hip hop songs at the clubs and bars, but I personally wouldn't own over 90% of them.

I dont find bubba sparkz (or whatever his name is) to be intimidating at all. I laugh at him everytime I see him
