I created this thread because I there are too many different threads about the new album. Instead of having rumors and news being spread over many different threads why not we just combine them into one huge thread?

Feel free to post, news, rumors, thoughts, articles, interviews, or anything relating to the new album. Even if it has already been posted in another thread just copy and paste it to this one, so we will have one single thread dedicated to the new album.

I want the new album to be like Sandinista, but good. A mix of funk, dub, psychedelic, ska, punk, ambient, jazz and obscure covers like "Dumb Magician" by the Blue Orchids. It'll be at least 1 hour 45 mins long and everyone will say its the best album ever made in the history of the world. Adrocks saxophone work will be highly regarded. Tom Verlaine will make some guest appearances and the world will recognise him as the worlds greatest guitarist. Mike D's mellotron solos will cause quite a few stirs as well. MCA will also reveal that hes become an Oldham Athletic fan, that hes spends his Saturdays singing insulting songs about Gary neville and that hes developed a taste for sausage rolls. The album will sell approximately a billion and the Kaiser Cheifs, ashamed that they're so crap, will all commit suicide. Meanwhile, astounded by my powers of prediction, the actress who plays Cameron in House will decide that she cant live without me.

The beasties are damned if they do and damned if they don’t.

Not matter what the beasties do people will say

- they are to old for hip-hop
- rapping about dropping your kids off to school, and showing your grandma love is lame
- leave the politics out of the music
- they should not use pro tools and computers and go back to old school drum machines
- they should do more hardcore
- they are to old for hardcore
- they should pick up their instruments
- they should stick to hip-hop
- they should team up with Rick Rubin again
- they should team up with the dust brothers again
- they should do more stuff they did 15-20 years ago

these are all complaints I have read on these boards in the last couple of years

as you can see the beasties will never be able to please everyone. There is always going to be some people who are pissed at them and their decisions. This however is what I love about the beasties, they do what they want when they want. Fuck the rest.

I personally have been waiting for the beasties to put an all instrument album out. I have always known that the beasties can do hip-hop, but I always wanted to see what else they could do with their instruments.

A lot of people on these boards will say “by creating an all instrumental album you are neglecting the beasties true fans. The ones who made them who they are today. If they don’t have any hip-hop then the beasties will fade away”
I disagree. I think if the beasties did another album full of do doo rhymes and inside jokes then they might actually indeed fade away. People would complain that “it’s the same old thing”. Plus people have to realize things are not going to be the same as they were 15-20 years ago.

The ignorant ear cannot distinguish between “so what cha want” and “ch-check it out”.
An all instrumental album would surprise a lot of people.

Also remember that the beasties are in their 40’s now and are parents. Would you think it would be that cool if you seen your parents or some 40 year olds rapping about girls, drinking and fighting for their right to party? (go ahead picture your mom or dad doing it)
A lot of people want them to just stick to hip-hop. Well they gave us an all hip-hop album three years ago and the majority of people dumped all over it.

I think at this stage in the beasties career an album like this makes perfect sense.

I made an obscure reference to Sandinista in another thread but I don't think anyone picked up on it, or at least if they did they didn't say anything. I'm addicted to that album lately, I keep listening to it. It's almost two and a half hours long but I can sit and listen to it. I often want my other senses to be stimulated though, the internet is only fun for so long.

3. "Namaste" – 3:59
4. "Pow!" – 2:13
5. "Son of Neckbone" – 3:22

7. "Eugene's Lament" – 2:13
8. "Bobo on the Corner" – 1:13
9. "Shambala" – 3:41
10. "Lighten Up" – 2:46
11. "Ricky's Theme" – 3:44

Here's my 2 cents. If the new album is all instrumental, or mostly instrumental, and they have a great first single.. the mainstream will realize what we've all known for years... That they can play, and play good, and are serious about what they do.. now.. this will brace the world for the NEXT album that will be all over the place and the the whole world will say, "WOW, Beastie Boys truly is one of the best bands ever!" Instrumental singles never turn out too well. I'm betting if it's an all instrumental album it will sell well to fans and be critically acclaimed but it will get no airplay at all. It'll probably win an award or two as well.

I talked about this in the thread that got locked. I think they should call this "Son Of The In Sound" unless these instrumentals break some really new ground. But if it's another 60s-themed LP, I am hoping for good cover art at least.

In Sound and Aligo were EP's....extra's if you will...that didn't interfere with the release of the hiphop LP's.......if they went in the studio and made a bunch of trax...instrumental & hiphop...and they put the instrumental's on this new cd and released it as an EP and then went back to finish a couple of rap trax and put out a hiphop record in say 6 months...then it'd be cool.......but to put this out and then wait another 3-5 years for new hiphop....is buggin!!!

When I read the Doc's post, I thought she was trying to say that most people that have seen them live already know they can really play well. And that if dirtydan is thinking the new album is going to surprise some folks then he may not have actually seen them play live.

And that mainstream already knows they can play instrumentals.

Sorry Doc...if I totally screwed up what you were trying to say. :o

I can't say that I've ever gone to a Beasties show because I wanted to see Adrock play the guitar. Personally, I think the Beasties' lack of ability is what makes them so likeable--I've always thought they were sort of mocking other rock bands. I'm sure that they enjoy playing their instruments and their enthusiasm makes it work, but no one could seriously call them accomplished at their particular instruments--not if you compare them to the other bands I've seen.

Being good at playing an instrument is not what I look for in rock bands anyhow. I'm sure the guys in Coldplay all play better than the Beasties, but that's not the point.

Maybe I'll eat my words if I wind up seeing an all instrumental show. Or maybe I won't. :p

Will you at least admit that BS 2000 is supposed to be a joke? No one could take Adrock playing a Casio keyboard seriously, right?

she means only a small percent of fans like the instrumentals. most fans who come to their shows walk out or talk during the songs. it will be hard to convince those fans to like new instrumetals - they don't like the old instrumentals.

That was certainly true on the pageant tour. I actually liked the prom suits and float but the crowd got pretty restless.

I enjoyed the instruments a lot more at the small west coast shows last October.

By the way, I have no problem if the new album is instrumental. I love the fact that The Beasties change it up and never repeat themselves. I rarely have expectations about albums before they come out anyhow. (If Radiohead puts out an instrumental album I'll fucking die though. :p )

I think most of what they do is with a sense of humor and in jest. They have fun. I wouldn't call BS2000 a joke, I would describe it as a fun experiment in silliness.

Once upon a time we used to have a forum devoted specifically to BS2000.

You're going to see many, many more great concerts in the years to come. Just keep going to see live music when you can, and even try some things you're not sure you will like. Some of the best things I ever saw were things where a friend or date dragged me along.

I suspect that the Hollywood one will always be a great memory, because that was truly world class.

I like instrumentals. But every show I've been to, they've completely lost the crowd with them.

Recently, Aussie press attacked them for slowing the tempo too much and sabotaging (no pun) their own energy level. Imagine if it started out tepid? Someone recently said to me it's funny that they didn't want to rip off festival-goers by playing songs they'd never heard, yet they'll stand around essentially doing nothing for 3 and a half minutes of Groove Holmes. Not my words, but I can dig.

I would love to eat my own words, but it would have to be a pretty exciting instrumental set to warrant them not just picking up Mics and doing their thing.

And dirtydan, I don't think you could be any more wrong, obviously. But I'm not going to attack you about it. I just don't think it's a very mind-blowing proposition to the world. No disrespect intended.

And seriously, enough with talking about In Sounds and the ilk. Travel back in time and talk about PB and LTI regarding TT5B, and see how that works out for you. Some people just think on such simple levels, it's a shame.

Here's my 2 cents. If the new album is all instrumental, or mostly instrumental, and they have a great first single.. the mainstream will realize what we've all known for years... That they can play, and play good, and are serious about what they do.. now.. this will brace the world for the NEXT album that will be all over the place and the the whole world will say, "WOW, Beastie Boys truly is one of the best bands ever!" (y) (y) :)
It seems like deep down you're hoping for the next one more than the upcoming one.

Like some people, I'm just happy for new material and that it didn't take so long to be released...and I'm glad they keep it fresh by changing it up and not pandering to what the masses wants

oh, and no one has heard any new material yet, so all of this talk is speculation...fan anger indeed

Who the fuck cares if the beasties lose fans for putting out an all instrumental album! LET THE FUCKING BEASTIE BOYS WORRY ABOUT THAT.

I would fucking be glad if I got to see the beasties in a small venue show cause 50% left cause their was no hip hop (or because half of the fans disagreed on what the beasties were doing)

All I know is that I am fan of the beasties and I know it. I could care less what the fucking masses think. THE MASSES ARE ASSES

i think BS2000 is very innovative, creative, great stuff.. I'm not bullshitting at all either.. I love Simply Mortified, especially the couple tracks that sort of reminded me of Fugazi.. I wish i could come up with all those styles they did with my friend and a keyboard.. i know it's a topic change, but you said it.. I won't agree that BS2000 is a joke.. It's a great project they did and it proves Ad Rock has soul coming out his asshole lol.. You have to really know alot of music to come up with all those tracks, from hardcore punk rock to knowing what's funky...
