preferably earbuds, but at least something that won't fuck up my hair too much (not that i have great hair, but if i wear headphones that arc over the top of my head, it makes a weird little dent in my hair that i'd like to avoid out in public)

what i really need is something that i can listen to at a relatively high volume without anybody around me being able to hear it. i need them because i do a lot of work at the library, but i get distracted too easily, so i need headphones at a fairly high volume to block out the noise. BUT, it's a library, so i can't really be blasting them at high volume.

do such headphones exist? i need badly to find some

Bose make a great pair of "in ear" style ones. I cant find a picture on google though strangely... They are quite expensive though, £70 ($120ish) in the UK.

I have these (http://www.amazon.com/Philips-HE591-Surround-Sound-Earbuds/dp/B0001OY2VS)

they're pretty good for cheapos. the surround sound is effective. I'm pretty sure no one else can hear them when they're in. my only problem is my ears are kinda too small for them. the cord is also asymetrical, so you wrap the right side around the back of your neck rather than having it hang in front. when you're walking, this sometimes makes the bud pop out of my left ear...but again, I have small ears.

I'd say get them if you have large ear canals. they're pretty cheap, you don't have much to lose.

I tested some of those out and of course, Bose holds their weight in audio technology. Everything sounded just perfect. I'm not too sure if others can hear you though if they're cranked up.

Yeah, Bose is always costly but you can never go wrong with them. My mom has had the same set of Bose 8" house speakers for 20 years and they're still awesome.

I got a set as "my christmas present to myself". They are fantastic, they do feel they may fall out sometimes but I think it's just my ears. The sound quality is really amazing. They seem pretty well built too and since I'd been through two sets of £35 Sony in ear ones in about 6 months spending £70 on a pair that might last a while seemed a sensible move.

hmmm, seems as though they are rather expensive. (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=TB634LL/A) wish I hadn't stood on them.
