This is one of my favorite times of year. The college basketball conference tournaments are in full swing (some are finished) and the brackets will be released Sunday. My college, Virginia Commonwealth University, won the regular season title and beat George Mason to win the CAA conference tournament. They are in the dance with a 27-6 record. I am betting they will be anywhere from a 12 to 8 seed.

I just watched Ohio State play in the big Ten tournament and Greg Oden is changing gears. He looked like a man among boys even though he is a Freshman.

I watch college ball sporadically throughout the season but this is the time when I get excited. There is nothing better in sports than the NCAA tournament.

Oh, and Queen, sorry about your Terps. How about Miami knocking them out of the ACC tourney in the 1st round? Wow.

hahaha...I was about to post up "Ah, March Madness. The one time of year people automatically assume I give one shit about Terps sports." :p

I'll watch basketball/football games on TV every so often, but I never went to a single sporting event when I went to UMD. I hated the whole fratboy mentality that was rampant at all games. The whole burning couches/cursing at the other team and punching out their fans thing UMD fans have never appealed to me.

Pitt.

Pitt is a very strong team. I was hoping West Va would beat Louisville in the Big East. How about that 3 step travel by Sosa of Louisville to send the game in OT? I sat yelling at the TV. The announcers did not even notice that he took 3 steps. The guy stopped his dribble above the free throw line and went in for a lay-up. What a farce.

In the ACC---Duke lost & Maryland lost

In the Big East---UConn lost & Syracuse lost

Now in the SEC Kentucky is in OT against Miss St

It is going to be a wild tourney.

Oh, and Queen, I stopped in College Park once and visited Cole Field House just for the heck of it. Some great players have graced your campus.

Indeed there have been. Steve Blake was very good in 2002. Too bad he was a double bagger. :(

Most of the team that year was butt-ugly, actually. I'm pretty sure the top 4 were drafted, though. Which is good, because that's their only ticket to pussy.

I am an old bastard so I remember players like---Albert King, Len Bias & Adrian Branch.

Miami is beating Boston College so they might be in the Semifinals.
Kentucky got beat in overtime by Miss State.

I don't care until the brackets are set. But I did watch Cal beat UCLA and Stanford lose to USC yesterday.

i just got back from new york watching my team lose in the final for the third time. they played great the first two nights, and then completely layed a dud when it mattered most. they shot something like 26% against a georgetown team that didn't even play their best ball either.

My team, VCU, got screwed with their #11 seeding. They play Duke and if we happen to win then Pitt is next. I would rather have been seeded 12.
Our conference rival, Old Dominion, who lost early in the tourney got a 12 seed and much better match-ups.

Oh, well, at least my VCU Rams are in.

i think your team has a decent shot with duke. i know i'll be cheering you on, although i would love to see my team mash duke apart

overall i think the bracket is pretty balanced and no team teally has an overly easy or hard path. i'd say they did about as good as they could have with it, minus maybe one or two teams that got left out.

HAHA I dont even wanna talk about that game. Coach Beilein done a great job this year at WVU getting that young team over 20 wins! Especially since they lost 8 players last year!

I worked with the team when I was at WVU and Beilein is one of the nicest people I've ever met. I learned so much from him!

That said, (being a WVU Grad) Im happy to see PITT win the conference tournament. They can go far in the tournament, it just depends on the matchups against other teams.

I'm also appauled that Drexel didn't make the tournament! I'm also surprised that Syracuse didn't make it. I really thought the big east would send 7 or 8 teams to the tournament rather than the 6 they did.

John Beilein is one of the best coaches in college basketball. I lived in Richmond, Va and watched him take a mediocre University of Richmond team deep into the tournament. He will get his due one day because he will continue to win games at West Va. I felt that they deserved a bid. I live near Texas Tech and believe me when I say they are a joke. They rode Bobby Knights coat tails all the way to a charity bid.

Let the madness begin. My team, VCU, plays Duke at 7pm. Like it or not that is our match-up. I am hoping for the best.

One of my best friends from High School is a doctor in Reno and has a house in Lake Tahoe. He is Nevada's team doctor. His name is Dr Bruce Witmer. He is a rehab sports specialist. He comes from a long line of doctors. His father is a doctor....his brother is a doctor....his younger and older sisters are doctors. I always thought it was funny that the entire family except their mother was a doctor.

The Nevada Wolfpack Right?

I am a very happy Virginia Commonwealth alum this morning. VCU's sophomore guard ,Eric Maynor, was impressive. He has a sick 1st step followed by a ridiculous crossover dribble. It is nice when your relatively unknown school can get some press on the national front.

Someone once told me a Hoya was a rock. Their mascot is a bulldog but a bulldog is not a Hoya.

the greek/latin phrase "hoya saxa" is a chantthat the students made up many years ago roughly translates to "what rocks"

the nickname was at that time the hilltoppers, but this phrase soon took over in popularity, so thats why they eventually changed to the hoyas

the bulldog came about because someone had said that the schools athletic teams were ferocious/tenacious like a bulldog, and a group lobbied the university to adopt it as their mascot
