That list is pretty on point with mine except I might put Boots Riley from the Coup in for Eminem. That's about the only change I would make.

Seriously man Guru is heavy. How can you deny the skills in this:
Mic skills, tight grills like I'm Michael Jill
Like when he write for the pill, is how I stifle the ill
Slide off kid, and let a grown man finesse it
We bold and impressive that old "I Manifest" shit
Some new product from a known team
Niggas know me, and you can bet they know Preme
So here we go for your stereo
And you could tell that it's real when you hear me go...

scust @ guru, and eminem. Eminem is great in theory, but dudes put out so much garbage for me to ever consider him top anything.
Pos is on the come-up, seriously. Dude is so underrated. Everything else about most lists just looks typical and cliched, and there becomes no point in making the list. Jay-Z is, for my money, nothing more than the best at saying he's the best "Thinking record sales make them the dopest".
Back Thought is on the verge of being mentioned. Ah, I dunno.
I'm not really exempt. One of my favourite MC's would bring about a chorus of SMH and scust.

he has a lot of wack lines which are usually overlooked by the production. Listen to Guru that isnt over a standout beat and pay attention to all the bullshit he spits.

I love Talib in that film. Even tho his voice always sounds too 'hoarse' live he easily outshines everyone else there (y)

That's not important though. If Biggie, Pac, Big L, Big Pun etc. hadn't died I can almost guarantee they would have fallen off by now. It's not about what they're doing, it's about what they've done.
Posdnous is a poet, not really an MC. That's why KRS-One isn't on my list, he doesn't really have the technical skill (in my opinion). And Black Thought is good but he's not of the calibre of Rakim, Q-Tip etc.
So who's the one you like who's SMH-worthy?

Yeah man, it was quality. It was really cool hearing that shit about how The Roots, Mos, Kweli, Common, Erykah Badu and that used to jam together way before any of them were signed. (y)

At least they would have released fewer new songs.

Eminem fell off hard. It doesn't matter if those other dudes died. In fact, that's probably why Jay gets most of his props, because he at least stayed consistent. Eminem had two patchy albums, and two plain ones, a bunch of pre-written freestyles, and a powerful friend. That's what he's done.
Black Thought kills it on even the weakest Roots songs. Listen to Illadelph and Things Fall Apart, before you pontificate about the greatness of another two M.Cs who fell off. Tip is nice as part of certain points of Tribe, but I wouldn't call him greatest. He's well known, for sure. Rakim, yeah his lines were pretty good, but he got outdone at his own game plenty quick. He's influential though. Very much so.
On the strength of that 'poet' shit, I'm not sharing. That's just fucking wacky talk.

I heard this new Premiere track with Nas, Kanye West, KRS, and Rakim and it's the first time in a very long time that I thougth Rakim actually killed song. I was never in love with his flow or his voice back in the Eric B. days even though he was a great lyricist, and I never liked songs like Move the Crowd, but I highly recommend this song. I think it's called "Classic"
That being said, he probably is in the top 10 in terms of his influence and lyricism, but I wouldn't put him there flow wise.

The Slim Shady and Marshall Mathers LPs weren't "patchy". Even Infinite was better than most of the shit out there. I own the CD of Things Fall Apart and have downloaded Illadelph, no doubt I am a fan of The Roots. But to me Black Thought is not a top MC. Q-Tip was always good (isn't really anymore) cuz he could really take you somewhere. Be it a story or a frame of mind, he could really write something to immerse yourself in and then keep it flowing.
How did Rakim get outdone at his own game? By whom? And yeah, Posdnous isn't really a hip-hop type rapper no matter which way you look at it. I think he even said it himself before.
Anyways what are your ten? Please share.

Whatever man. I find your hip-hop threads to be like pulling teeth, so I'm not posting my list.
You say Q-tip can take you somewhere, while Black Thought can't. You say Eminems albums arent' patchy, so I guess they aren't. You say that Posdnous isn't a hip-hop MC (and he's even dissed his own flow from the De La is Dead sessions, which shows me he doesn't hear what I'm hearing), so I suppose he's not. It also doesn't matter that Kane made Rakim's flow look like some la-di-da-di shit, I guess. I'm stupid for thinking that, too.
Start a thread about something else, already.

Oh please, Black Thought is the same over-egged thick contemplation shit and/or unity strength power political shit every time, he's nice and he's got his whole persona down and all, but he doesn't touch Q-Tip. Anyway if this is like pulling teeth to you and you refuse to contribute in any useful or simple way then stop posting here, simple as.

What is a hip-hop type rapper?
Lex Diamonds
03-16-2007, 02:12 PM
For me hip-hop is graffiti, breakdancing, turntablism, rap battles, fly shoes, etc. Plug One is more like a poet kind of rapper. Anyway all these terms have such loose definitions, it's just the way I use it.

I think many of us can judge MCs in many ways. I judge the best mcs on their "unique" style. Someone that you can say: "there's no one that sounds like that."
That list would include:
Chuck D (#1)
KRS-one
DMC
B-Real
Busta Rhymes
Adrock
Andre 3000
Biz Markie
Jay-Z
Plug One
Seriously yo! There's no one on that list that you can say: "Hey, he sounds like him."

You see, i dont get this at all. Jay-Z in his career has never used graffiti, breakdancing, turntablism, he's had much hyped "battles" but never faced off against nas, and as for fly shoes, im not sure exactly what they are. do they involved flubber? At least Pos was in a group with a bonafide DJ...
anyways, my point is to called Posdonous not hip-hop boggles the mind, and to make the argument because he doesn't represent all those elements even more so. You could start scratching off a whole load of rappers...and you'd probably be left with Evidence.
who's shit.

Big L doesn't really have all that much versatility IN MY OPINION. And Eminem was good for such a short time IN MY OPINION that I don't know that I would put him on there.
So IN MY OPINION here are some MC's that make a top 10. One of them I don't even like that much, but I can't disrespect his influence.
2Pac
BIG
Ghost
Phonte
Black Thought
DOOM
Pos
KRS-One (1996 and back)
Lord Finnesse
Ice Cube (Up until about 96-97)
So while some would like to deconstruct my opinion as I try to do to them, bear in mind I know my list isn't definitive, and I don't assume it to be the absolute best collection. It's just the list I made today.

Eminem's recent lyrics kinda suck, like how he raps about how shit his life is, even though he's a millionaire, like he's trying keep with the style that got him famous. It was understandable for infinite and the Slim Shady lp, when his life probably was shit.

Encore was made b4 Proof's death and Kim was out of the picture....so its not because of that, he reached the top and lost intrest in it. He isnt hungry anymore, he has nothing left to prove (simlar shit has been seen with Nas, Mos Def, even the Wu-Tang Clan as a unit).
