(y) Great opener. People whinged it was too similar to So Watcha Want. These people are scumbags, and have no brains. It is most similar to Pass The Mic in verse length/layout (MCA opens, then Mike so on), bass dumps and cymbal driven beat.
But yeah, it's an improbably good tune from such a contentious era. This song I love.

wrestling.

I've always thought of Rhyme The Rhyme Well as similar to Pass the Mic.
Ch-Check It Out seems much faster. Crazy fast like a blender. I like CCIO, it's a solid fun song. Mike did a great job of creating the live Fessshhhhh hook in concert.
It was a good choice to use as the lead single. The video is funny although a bit all over the place.

Nowadays I prefer Just Blaze remix, and also the video - simple but excellent, without the repetetive fights (not that I don't find it amusing).

after I listened to Peggy Lee's "sittin' on the dock of the bay" I really started to appreciate this song a lot more.

I really, really like this song and I think its head and shoulders above everything else on TT5B. Not everyone could take a song like this and make it dope but the Beasties did. The percussion is great and the ride cymbal on the hooks sounds incredible.

Yeah, definetely my favorite track on TT5B. The energy and excitement matched perfectly how pumped I was for the album to drop- it got me totally excited to devour the album. Interestingly I think this is why it took me ALOT of times listening to the album to really get into it because CCIO made me so stoked for a new album of tracks that would blow me the hell away and, for me at least, it didn't really happen. Side point I guess but I'm just saying...

Great choice as the first single. It was the perfect way of saying, "We're back! Again."
it's a killer song! i love it!!

I wasn't that impressed with it at first, if not disappointed. The beat is decent, the flows were off....but great doo doo rhymes.
It did grow on me...

The flows are still off!!
Worst part is MCA's:
Light rays blazin', you're out of phase and my crew's amazin'
We're working on a record yo so just be patient
Makes me cringe every time :(

This is the same guy who dropped A Year And A Day, he can rap however the hell he wants. That line is actually awesome because MCA is such a legend hes basically saying "I can even rap off-beat and no one will give a shit."

I thought this too when I first heard the song. But the emphasis is on the "phase and" part that is timed perfectly with the horn sample.
You gotta open it up to a cross-hatch pattern, don't get stuck in the regular grid. (y)

i always thought that mike's verse had a considerable amount of shakiness. alot of under-pronunciation. i was baffled when i finally read the lyrics and a coupla parts didnt even sound at all like what was in writing. adrock definitely owns this track lyrically, no doubt about that.

Top tune. I remember I couldn't believe how good it was when I first heard it. I loved MCA's aforementioned part after the second listen. He flips it up nice.
I like TT5B as an album, but I'd almost be tempted to say I got the songs I really loved after the first week or in most cases the first listen. Ch-Check It Out, RRNN, RTRW and An Open Letter are my one's in a sort of classic status.
And Oh Word? etc creep in and out. It's a good album though, and CCIO was a rocking comeback.

i like this song but me and my brother had lunch the other day & this song came up & he brought up that the bboys's singles all sound similar that they're voices & flows & beat tempo's are similar in almost every single they release, i was all you're bugin out bro, then i started thinking about what he said, and he might be right:confused:

For the most part: Its the record companies decision on which songs are released as singles.
Im still trying to understand why they released right right now now instead of open letter as the third single here in the US.
we could only put on three cuts from the new record. capitol wanted ccio and tt, and we really wanted to put open letter on.
we thought open letter should have been the second single, kept telling the label, but capitol insisted on going with triple trouble. they kept saying "it'll be the next single....." but then they never released it. so we really wanted it to be on this record so that people would get to hear it and see the vid...

Yeah and releasing an open letter in Europe, this really didn't make sense.

You're right. 6 songs from LTI were singles ("Girls", "(You've Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)", "No Sleep 'Till Brooklyn", "Paul Revere", "Hold It Now, Hit It", "Brass Monkey").
Check Your Head had 5 songs ("Jimmy James", "Pass The Mic", "So What'cha Want?", "Time For Livin'", "Gratitude").

yeah but she's crafty was a double a-side of girls, at least over here (i know as i have the 7") and i'm sure the new style was out in some countries too.
and time for livin' had a video, but i don't think it was a single. same with ricky's theme. or so i thought.

The "Time For Livin'" music video was actually in regular rotation on MTV for a short time. I don't know when though. I'm guessing after "Jimmy James" or after "Gratitude" came out, so that would mean either fall '92 or winter '93.
EDIT: The Music Video Database doesn't help, although I now know the world premiere dates for almost all of the Beasties videos:
December 1986: "(You've Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party!)"
April 1987: "No Sleep 'Till Brooklyn"
June 1989: "Hey Ladies"
September 1989: "Shake Your Rump"
November 1989: "Shadrach"
March 1992: "Pass The Mic"
May 1992: "So What'cha Want?"
August 1992: "Jimmy James"
January 1993: "Gratitude"
April 1993: "Stick 'Em Up"
May 1994: "Sabotage"
September 1994: "Sure Shot"
June 1995: "Root Down"
May 1998: "Intergalactic"
December 1998: "Body Movin' (Fatboy Slim Remix)"
April 1999: "3 MC's And 1 DJ"
November 1999: "Alive"
January 2000: "Start!"
May 2004: "Ch-Check It Out"
July 2004: "Triple Trouble"
October 2004: "Right Right Now Now"

Infact I think the worst Beastie song...
