"Blues Traveler frontman John Popper has been giving the Associated Press the runaround. On Tuesday he was arrested in Washington for possession of marijuana. When the AP asked for a comment from the singer, he denied their request.
Popper's black Mercedes SUV was pulled over on Tuesday for going 111 mph on Interstate highway 90. Popper was not driving at the time, but was in the car with the driver, Brian Gourgeois. When a police dog searched the car after Washington State Patrol officers smelled marijuana, they discovered a small amount of the drug as well as a pipe, a Taser and night vision goggles. In hidden compartments, they found four rifles, nine handguns and a switchblade knife.
The vehicle, which was outfitted with flashing emergency headlights, a siren and a public address system, was seized by the State Patrol. WSP said in a statement, "Popper indicated to troopers that he had installed these items in his vehicle because [in the event of a natural disaster] he didn't want to be left behind."
Popper and Gourgeois were booked at Adams County Jail and were later released on their own recognizance. They will face misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. Gourgeois will have an initial charge of reckless driving."
