there is a business down the street from my house...they have a glass door and I noticed one day that they have Playboy magazines in the waiting area.

the first person who guesses what kind of business it is...gets to be the first person who guesses what kind of business it is.

you can ask questions and i will be happy to give clues.

your first clue however is that the business is not related to porn.

I have to say I was surprised when I found out. I had always been by the place when it's closed and you could only see the waiting area through the glass door because the blinds are usually closed.

then one day I went by in the evening and he was open and them I saw the barbers chair and sink and stuff.

I don't have a problem with him having playboys in a waiting room...I'm just surprised as all heck.

Yeah, that used to be pretty common. I'm not surprised it still is.

yes this barber was probably in his 60's. and his shop looks like something out of the 70's.

I imagine him giving haircuts to bail bonds men, private detectives and mafia hitmen. heh.

I can remember going in as a kid and they'd sort of scoop up and relocate any sensitive material in a sort of knowing/discreet way, like I had no idea what was up.

Then after the haircut, the barber would give me a dime to run next door and get some candy while my mom paid the guy. I never figured out if the dime was really on him or if my mom was supposed to fork over an extra dime or what.

why would you want to get a hard on at the barbers?

It was more like a culture of guys just hanging out, shooting the shit. It was a place for people to just chill, even if you weren't getting your hairs cut. That's where guys would catch up on what was what. Kind of like a pub without the beer.

I thought all barbers had a copy of playboy? Is it really that shocking?

I mean, yeah, it's tits an' all, but there's copy upon copy of Cosmopolitan in the unisex place round the corner from where I live and that contains some of the raunchiest shit I've ever read, but you don't hear anybody gasping in shock about it.

Well, being female I don't spend much time in the traditional barbershop for men. Also we're pretty PC here in the U.S. so i didn't know any business owner would put "porn" out.

I'm not complaining about it, by the way. I just hadn't seen playboy on display in a public place before where it wasn't sealed in plastic. I like playboy though. it's better than some of the other magazines out there for sure.

Trust me -- it doesn't register at all like "porn," even though it technically is. It's a "girlie magazine," whereas something "porn" would be more like a "skin magazine" and that would be less likely to be left out.

Basically, Playboy is tasteful enough that it sort of gets a pass. It's less likely that you'd see Penthouse laying around, and no way you'd see some of the even more clinical ones.

Those are in a drawer. :D

At one record store where I worked, one of the guys kept his stash in a drawer under the register. They just stayed there, circulating a little, year after year. Things got slow, you'd poke into his collection. He liked some weird shit.

The barbershop in my hometown (Cork's Barbershop) has Playboys in it. No biggie. Like a-z said, it's where all the old dudes in my town hang out and chill. I think some of 'em are even bald, so they have no business being in the damn place!

Out of the two places I get my hair taken care of, one of them also has Playboys for your viewing pleasure if you so desire. That's also the same place that gives me a back massage, hot towel facial, haircut, and straight razor treatment for a pretty spiffy deal (about $14 plus tip). They really try and push the "manly" essence though. Pin-up girls everywhere, the haircutting stuff is kept in a tool box, the radio in there is always tuned to classic rock... that type of stuff.

I'm telling yeah about 98% of women have no idea about what goes on in Barbershops. we are under the mistaken assuptions that you only go there to get a haircut.

Well, at the place I with the hot towel facials... all the people that work there are female. I reckon they have a good idea of what goes on in the barbershop.

I think for the most part though, most dudes are going just to get a haircut. I know that I personally don't go there to sneak a peak at some dirty magazines or anything. I mean, hey, I can buy those myself...
