The lyrics in question:

"Maybe I'm just like my father, too bold..."

and the next bit is hotly being debated at the moment. I believe it says "Maybe You're just like my mother; she's never satisfied" while other schools of thought have it as "Maybe I'm just like my Mother....".

My stance is that the song is about a volatile relationship, and our hero is analyzing the whole situation, and blaming his projections of early parental values on the whole debacle. He's chosen a woman like his mother, he should know better than this, but it's not entirely a surprise at the same time.

The other school of thought has the main character blaming himself entirely for the mess, and searching inwards, to establish where he got these issues from. He has his Father's and his Mother's problems.

Similar ideas, in a way. But I think it's the first one.

it definitely sounds like "you're", being a prince song, this might have to be spelt as u're

ive always followed the school of thought formally known as your second theory. (that would be the second option, :o )

I have never liked that song, which is tough because I'm a big Prince fan and it was happy when Purple Rain was such a hit for him (it's rare to see Minneapolis in a movie).

To my ears, he's clearly saying that he's like his father and the girl he's singing to his like his mother and so as a couple they're clashing like his parents clashed. My view of the song can't be disconnected from the way he portrayed his parents in the movie and video.

Same here. Most of the stuff in the movie seems to be some type of visual to go with the lyrics so that's what I usually relate the song too.

i always wondered what that song would've sounded like if Prince had left the bass in it. he scratched it at the very last minute before it was submitted to the label.

Not as bad as a rabbit scream, which is horrifying.

There were other instruments on it, too. Supposedly it had a thicker arrangement and he just kept subtracting stuff to see how spare he could make it.

The verses on "1999" are kind of the same way. They were all singing each line, and then he pulled vocals here and there so it sounded like they were trading lines.

I heard a band cover it, and they said "I'm". So I was really just wanting to be vindicated in calling them a shite covers band.
